Our AFL captain is basically some guy working as a store assistant manager of a failing retail chain who went on a weekend leadership course

This needs to be added to his Wikipedia page.

How is this guy captain? Personality of a wet wipe, he just comes across as an arrogant idiot.

His poor start to the season gets imo fairly criticised by Kane Cornes, but he doesn’t have either the humility of self-awareness to recognise it and instead just takes a swipe at Kane saying he’s never led a football club. Well guess what Tom, neither have you.

Then he follows that up with “I’d love to be getting best on ground every week but the important thing is we’re winning games and I’m helping the team get better”.

Wtf? This is our captain? We’re not winning games and we’re not getting better. Instead of reflecting on his and the teams poor start to the season he again just goes on the defensive and ends up saying something that doesn’t even make sense, and he’s supposed to be the inspirational leader of the football club?

There is enough evidence now to say this is the most mentally weak playing group we’ve had in the AFL and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that’s he’s the captain of it.

Honestly, this bloke is the worst captain in our history and the day he‘s not will be a day of celebration.

Holy sh*t. This attitude has come about because of "Kenny's" we wrap our arms around each other, don't listen to white noise defense of their trash since 2015. He refuses to acknowledge and accept any blame or criticism of their performances and the playing group reflects that. Out you go with "Kenny" you d*ickhead.

I’ve been a fan, but I think it’s time.

id like to ask why do we need a response, why can’t we just play at an elite level intensity every game, why 2 games in do we need to rocket and then 3 games in need a response, **** me its 3 games in and already we need to be motivated to win a game.

how fragile are these players, how fragile is the coaching staff.. how fragile has this club become.

weak as piss response. tredders spot on we love to talk the talk.

Imagine you’re a player for PAFC and this is your captain. At his side is DBJ.

Now imagine they’re telling you to improve your game after the last two weeks.

How do you think you’d feel? Would you have any respect for the leaders? Hell no.

If Jonas’ attitude in public is representative of what he’s like at the club, there would be some real tensions brewing.

Pathetic by Jonas. The club is cooked if this is what passes for leadership. Playing poorly and not being able to do what he once could onfield is one thing, but he has full control of what he says off it. He can still try and set the tone, take responsibility and lead his players.

Should be sacked as captain immediately.

Jonas in his casual wear, talking casually about how casual he is about the criticism of his performance. Captain Casual.

I did like how Nine edited the footage of Durry Bong Cones and The Big Scooter to synchronise with the voiceover: “… as the club searches for answers on their Showdown loss”. Someone at Nine reckons they know two of the answers.

This has missed Tom and highlights why our club is stuck in mediocrity… clear out the no hopers, this language and message is exactly what Fos was on about… next coach needs to bring in Jenny Williams, she was great with the between the ears stuff!

As others have already suggested Jonas's childish response to valid criticism of his extremely poor form is typical of what a shambles the club has become under Kok and Hinkley.

There is no ownership of a problem, and any response is either to try and deflect it away, and/or attack who ever highlighted that problem.

Alright steady on.

That was a bad interview and I am sure Jonas would wish he had said things differently.

And he looks closer to the end of his career than the start.

  • ease up on the personal criticism
  • he is a very smart and competitive guy
  • the players chose him, not Hinkley

This style is emblematic of the ‘Ted Lasso’ style of coaching. Creating better people and allowing/supporting them to fulfil their potential. Ross Lyon discussed this, Craig McRae has the nickname ‘Lasso’. Like it or not, this is the new and consistent mantra of modern day coaching.

More broadly the club has had an interesting response to criticism. Boak was supposedly unhappy with Kochie’s criticism several years back. The club fired up massively after the sack Hinkley sticker. Kochie last year back pedalled after his ‘improve or else’ statement. Question has to be asked, why? Is it just a public face thing? Are the staff and players fragile? Is it easier to do your job and a happy place without the criticism?

I think you can be ‘Ted Lasso’ and take responsibility for results and outcomes and be ruthless.

It hurts that he hasn't had a good matchup for the last 2 weeks. He is a medium defender playing on talls and smalls. He is not suited to this role anymore. He should only play when there is a suitable medium forward for him to play on.

The issue here is that Jonas repeatedly 'says things he'd wish he worded differently'. Remember him saying we lost the fire in the belly as an excuse for the 2022 season, gotta live your life etc. This is obviously who he is and how he feels. It's fine to have work life balance, it's not fine for leaders of organisations to shrug their shoulders and 'go oh well, no big deal' after repeated failure and then get sensitive when called out on it. He shouldn't be chosen for his position if that's how he feels and shouldn't put himself in that position. This doesn't even consider the fact that his form doesn't warrant selection in the first place.
I agree that management and coaching is largely about relationships and the days of just screaming and swearing louder are gone. But surely the head coach has some responsibility for team structure, game plan and in game adjustments. All areas that Hinkley has failed at repeatedly so other than being a mate to a group of guys in their 20's what has he achieved?
On the other point, why is the club so sensitive to any criticism? Why are they more focused on attacking the criticism of their poor performance than improving the poor performance? The priorities are all wrong, they are more concerned with protecting what they've got going on rather than wanting to be better.

the three worst players who are somehow automatic selections on our list. none of them should be in the 22. that's our leaders. no wonder no one is putting in effort.

It has been said that the assistant coaches told Donuts Jonas is not best 22. I has also been said he was not voted in by the players but Hinkley overruled them all. Jonas started the 'white noise' with those exact comments years ago. The other comment is subjective.

I thought the exact opposite of this was true?

That Ken wanted Wines but the players wanted TJ?

Ollie would be captain if he wanted it, I think.

Bit of an indictment on the playing group that neither he, nor anyone else, put themselves forward. It's no wonder we lack any kind of killer instinct.
If we had a Selwood or a Hodge type leader we wouldn’t have choked in so many big games, the lack of on field leadership has been a huge issue for years
