If he were to be traded, what would Hawthorn get in return?

  • Two good 1st round picks

  • Top 10 pick and change

  • A 1st & a 2nd

  • Later 1st round pick

  • Two 2nd rounders

  • Early 2nd rounder

  • Other 2nd round pick

  • Less than a 2nd rounder

What kind of return would make it worthwhile for Hawthorn to trade him?

Anything short of a first-rounder, they may as well keep him.

Who's going to give up a first-rounder? Brisbane and Richmond will both have two picks in the teens. Would anyone else consider it?

So he'll turn 29 in his first season at a new club if he gets traded. That's the point.

There can only be a few clubs who'd consider trading a first-rounder for a player that age.
For sure - only a club in contention wanting to go all-in would be interested, particularly if they felt they had most pieces to the puzzle already but were missing an accumulator at the contest.

Carlton traded a top 10 pick for a 26 (27 next month) year old Adam Saad.

Wouldn't put it past them trading a first for a player that would actually help their team.

If I were a Hawk supporter I'd be wanting him out tbh. Long gone are the days of him winning a Brownlow. For where they're at, they need to prioritize senior players that are strong leaders (which I don't think Tom is), whilst blooding youth (which hopefully they will acquire in this draft/trade period).

Jaeger is likely next captain, Wingard is their most damaging, McEvoy is a good leader & lost any value. Their midfield as is, is also extremely one dimensional.

I'd be accepting anything that they can get in pick 15-25 range. No club is going to offer anything higher IMO, and I think a pick in that range would still be the best decision for Hawthorn long-term.

The clubs who need a player like that have early firsts which they are not going to trade for him.

The clubs that have late firsts don't need him.

I think Richmond or Brisbane could make the case, given both will have two late first-rounders. He could still be a top three midfielder at either of those clubs next year.

Ahead of who Neale McCluggage and Lyons are our starting 3 next year with Bailey and Rayner switch hitting as the 4th midfielder wouldn’t be aggressively chasing Mitchell don’t dislike him at the Lions either though

I said Mitchell could be top three at the club next year. That list of names doesn't come close to rebutting that claim. It would be an argument about who is second/third banana behind Neale out of Mitchell, McCluggage and Lyons - I'd say that's a pretty open question. Clearly McCluggage is going to be a top-liner for the next 8-10 years but that's not the point - it's about who would be better next year.

Why even mention Bailey and Rayner like they're more accomplished midfielders than Mitchell? Particularly with Rayner coming off a knee reconstruction. That's just silly and pumping up your own tyres for the sake of it.
