Tom Murphy - Take a bow.

Thought Murphy got caught out tonight, seemed to lose sight of his man. I believe that Murphy is one of our best defenders, for his role on medium-small fowards. Tonight, however, was not one of his best nights. Seemed to be out of position a few times. Nevertheless, I'm sure he will bounce back, and you certainly can't fault his endeavour. Watch him hold Robbo goaless next week!

what he said! sorry delisted, I thought he was pretty ordinary tonight & didn't do enough to cut out other opponents. is a third tall defender at best in my books, like jacobs, but not as skilled. the advantage he has is the ability to do well & not get cut up by smalls.

Great Game. Solid, composed and was a bull at the ball. :thumbsu:

Honorable mentions to Whitecross, McGlynn, Dowler and probably a few younger guys I cant remember.

Good win.

Are you F!@#ing serious? I Thought possibly our biggest liabilty. Couple of good disposals but is way out of his leauge at Full Back, Centre Half Back, Half Back or even backward of the centre circle. Sure hope he can find a possie in the forward line at box hill after all our defence recover!

Im a fan of Murph's but he seemed to loose confidence early and often had no idea where the ball was tonight. Needed more back up

I rarely post, and am not one to instantly slag of players after bad games.

Murph is a Hawk, and until the point of him being otherwise, he should be treated and given as much respect as you would Franklin, Hodge or any other one of the stars in our team. He is playing out of position, out of his weight and out of his height. Give the kid a break.

Threads like these do not help the confidence of players should they read them. Poor effort.

Not sure if I'll get a chance to watch a replay but I watched the game from about the 25 min mark of the first quarter to the end and I thought we was pretty good for the most part, esp. when the game was an arm wrestle.

It is obviously up to the coaching staff to help Murphy with advice on how to play against bigger opponents but I think he tends to get caught up in too many stationary body-on-body contests where he ends up being outmarked. Sometimes I wonder if he would be better off losing contact with his opponent and concentrate more on winning front position to effect a spoil.

Wow, A fat, sarcastic Hawk fan: you must be a devil with the ladies.

Why not back Murphy - he hasn't played 50 games, and he's battling way out of his height and weight limits, and doing a solid job each week. He is surrounded by inexperienced backmen, yet turns up each week.

As I said Davo23, yeah it was a poor thread on my behalf. Murphy does try.

And I do go alright with the ladies. Thanks.

Underrated...carved up Lecras who is on fire and did a good job on Betts. Destroys mid to small forwards and has only struggled when being given a huge forward which Croady of Gilham usually take. Has done a good job.

Let us not hastily judge Tom... Yes, he's been comprehensively beaten by larger bodies, but hey, so was Zac Dawson early on and look at him now. What Tom Murphy needs is time, experience and a man's body... DEVELOPMENT people!!

He did a great job for the most part last year... but our great team had a wonderful run with injuries (albeit a little scratchy early on). Point is... in 2008 he had a team around him. Fast forward to this year, as we all know, we have been well and truly r*ped by the injury devil particularly in Murph's area.

Bottom line is the kid is doing the best he can within his physical capabilities to hold his position. He will obviously perform better against smaller forward lines for as long as our backline is depleted. So let's lay off a bit in judging his potential.

I'm not really fussed when he gets beaten in a wrestling match. That's perfectly understandable given he is generally smaller than the guys he is playing on. It is his disposal and the fact that he often completely loses his man that is the worry.

As has been said though he will be much better in a settled backline with the likes of gilham and croad back, and can play quite well on the smalls.
