That comment about sex appeal will do Tones so much harm with the Sydney westie blokes who usually vote Labor.

As will the sight of Tones dreadfully unattractive daughter who was standing alongide him when he said it.

:D

Tony when will you learn not to make stupid comments that will only give more credence to the claim of you being a misogynist and cause female voters to turn away

http://www.theage.com.au/federal-po...abbott-talks-up-candidate-20130813-2ru0b.html

This seems to be a bit of a fiction, as far as I can tell. The last ReachTEL poll shows female voters prefer Abbott to Rudd, and the Coalition is more popular with female voters than men.

When you get down to issues polling there's a lot of women who are concerned about Abbott's stance on stuff like abortion, but the 'Abbott is a misogynist' thing doesn't get much traction. I remember that when Galaxy polled women back around the time of Gillard's big misogyny speech, only 25% of female voters agreed with the statement.

Why that is, I can only speculate. I would guess that at least part of the reason is that, for better or worse, Abbott's views are not really that different to a lot of middle-aged Australian males. A bit sexist, a bit patronising, a bit stuck in the past. Women might disagree with it, but when their own dads hold similar views then it's probably a bit hard to see it in the vicious/dangerous light that the word 'misogyny' implies.

What does Tony Abbott having daughters have to do with it? Do you think sexists are incapable of having daughters?

You do know that the gender of your child is not something you can pick don't you?

the problem is, you also assume "women" all think the same.

He said it in a list of reasons why he thinks people should vote for her. Has he ever said that the reason people should vote for one of his male candidates is because they have sex appeal?

yes, well I can see why people may get offended :D

I wonder if he'll now say it about a bloke just to cover his arse.

I do remember someone saying that about Kate Ellis once, but I'm not sure if it was a politician or a media person.

We are talking in generalisations about demographics here. If we accept the premise that a man being sexist is (all else being equal) inclined to make women less likely to vote for him, it's reasonable to also speculate about reasons why such a thing may not make them less likely to vote for him.

It certainly doesn't presuppose that all women will think the same or make decisions for the same reasons.

Wasn't the gender it was more how ugly she was. Just like Fiona Scott. Tones was making a prize dill of himself talking about sex appeal in the presence of those two.

I'm just going to say o.k and move along with it, he has clearly said something that was not well thought out.

No secret Tones likes women, likes sex and lots of it and is no doubt very good at it. In my experience this is not generally a turnoff to women. Usually the opposite.

And indeed most women would probably agree that Fiona Scott has sex appeal. I doubt if most women other than the Glebe/Brunswick feminist harpies who-have-disposed-of-their-husbands-demographic would consider the comment sexiest.

As you imply - all of that is in any case largely irrelevant to how women will choose to vote.

The Reachtel polls which deny respondents a "don't know" option are v interesting in the female preference for Abbott over Rudd, Caesar. Thanks for pointing them out.

You just confirmed my suspicions about you. I may be pro Labor but at least I don't fantasies about having sex with Labor politicians. I am sure you are looking forward to going to bed tonight and imagining Tony Abbott naked in your room.

But because it is consistent with what people expect from Tony Abbott it will be seen as consistent and not fake.

Have been making the point about Abbott's authenticity for ages. It's one of his big strengths that people have learnt that what you see is what you get, like it or not.

I guess that is true, in reality you are spot on.

that kind of comment is exactly what you expect from Tony - It actually may make him more likeable?

Ease up on the hyperbole GJ, you have gone into overdrive since Rudd came back. You used to be a reasonable poster. You're starting to look as bad as me.

I dont think there will be a tony is an ogre moment no matter how much people want there to be

It all comes down to whther people voters will see the incumbent as a safer bet, which is debatable at the moment

Fwiw I still prefer abbott to Howard, the slimy little shit

I don't think anybody is disputing that.

I am as it clearly has political implications. I think it is very useful to know which of Tone's female candidates give him a bit of a tingle. The presence on the front bench of Sophie M, Bishops x 2 and "the Jaw" (Kelly O'D) suggests that where Libnat MPs have sex appeal this "quality" does not assist in their advance to Tone's front bench. We do not want a federal repeat from Tone of Troy Buswell's unusual seat sniffing behaviour now do we.

Tony needs to come clean and rate all his female candidates, perhaps out of 10 on the "roooaaahh" scale. Perhaps his assessment of "a bit of sex appeal" can be rated 3/10, which seems fair enough.

Typical fuss over nothing. No doubt the twittersphere will be going nuts jumping on anything Abbott says, so they can deliberately "take offence."

The candidate in question has sex appeal. Abbott spoke the truth. No one would dispute that everything he said was accurate.

Remember during 2007 when it was revealed that Rudd went to a strip club? Now this is no big deal, I couldn't care less, but it's ironic that this was "celebrated", while if Abbott had done it, he would have been condemned.

The fact that conservative politicians are held to far higher standards than Labor pollies is one of the great frustrations. It's incredibly unfair.

They do get a huge benefit of the doubt on financial issues though
