Movie Top 5 Most Overrated Films

I already totally derailed the "what have you seen recently?" thread with my analysis of Shawshit Redemption. Anyone who disagrees has forfeited their right to an opinion on anything.

Avatar was also shit. Anyone who said Prometheus was good was wrong. Gravity was shit. Inception was a ****ing turd as well.

OH MY GOD ITS A DREAM BUT IT'S INSIDE OF A DREAM ZOMG MY ****IN HEAD EXPLODED ****!

... Said every idiot who rated that film. Get a brain arseh*le, it wasn't that complicated.

I agree with you on many of these points but art is interesting. Just because you say it was crap doesn't mean it is. Obviously people enjoyed these movies. People went to see it and liked it and it made the studio money. So on that level they are successful. We'll see if it stands the test of time.

You can say the same with music. I'm not a big fan of One Direction but it seems they are achieving their goal.

It got Globes or BAFTAs or something. I definitely remember it getting far too much award show love. Plus it made a lot of critics' top movies of the year lists.

I enjoyed it but it was decidedly average.

Ugh. It got a Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) nomination in a year Mamma Mia! was nominated. No-one rated it. Similar to The Departed, Oscars/GG/BAFTAs shouldn't be used as an indicator of if a film is 'rated'. The Departed won in 2006 by default - Scorsese was rediculously overdue and there was no viable alternative. You'd be hard pressed to find a critic now who thinks its anywhere near the best film of '06. It's merely popular.

That's why I tend to use the phrase "I didn't like it" as opposed to "It was bad".

Pretty sure the definition of "being rated" is getting awards and noms.

Not in the slightest. Awards are won and nominations are gained (primarily) by marketing, campaigning and having a prestige director or baity story. Critics reviews, which should be the indication of if a film is 'rated', are never a deciding factor unless the film is small/difficult. You're ignorant to think just because a film gets an an Oscar or GG that anyone actually thinks its the best film of the year, just look at what Harvey Weinstein does every year.

Awards are generally a reasonably decent synthesis of what is both popular and critically acclaimed. That is what I refer to when I talk about something being 'rated', not exclusively one or the other.

Awards nominations maybe but not the actual win. The difference between a Best Picture nominee and a Best Picture winner has more to do with the PR team and the type of film then popularity and critically acclaim. Using awards wins as an indicia for a film being 'rated' doesn't work when you're comparing two Oscar nominated films. NCFOM isn't 'rated' above TWBB simply because it won the Oscar that year. Nor can you justify The Departed being 'overrated' solely because it won. They both won for reasons unrelated to popularity/critical acclaim.

It was a great period for me going to the movies I think it's what kick started my desire to see as many good films as possible. I think I went and saw within the space of a year or two the following. No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Into the Wild, Control, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, The Edge of Heaven, Waltz With Bashir, The King of Kong, Zodiac, The Counterfeiters. I think I saw Babel a bit earlier. American Gangster, Atonement, The Bank Job, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Band's Visit. I remember being in Uni going to the movies every week on cheap Monday lmao. Then there's a heap I didn't see that came later.
I think it's one of the richest times in film at least in modern times.

King Of Kong was my second favourite movie that year.

So good...

Agreed. It's a good, prophetic premise, but it wears thin as a story and style rather quickly. Wouldn't make a Stone Top 5 for me or anything. It's the sort of film you would study in high school for a few weeks, then forget about almost completely.

It sort of belongs to a moment in the 90s, like other films such as Night at the Roxbury.

On a side note, I find that versatile studio-era directors such as William Wyler and Fred Zinnemann have been unfairly forgotten in many ways. They both made a number of classics, but are usually ignored when people talk about 'auteurs' (usually more attached to post-studio era directors, or earlier types who changed the game a bit).

It's more underrated or aptly rated than anything.

It's one of those Ron Howard films that is okay but wasn't praised (despite all the Ron Howard distaste out there and the man's seeming inability to deliver a masterpiece, still 3/4s of his films are quite solid at worst.

EDtv suffered from the double trouble syndrome. The Truman Show was out at a similar time, and sucked up all the attention (somewhat deservedly, but EDtv had a lot going for it as well).

War Horse... I really, really, really wanted that ******* horse to die.

And to anyone putting up a Kubrick film as overrated, do humanity a favour and microwave your genitals.

fanboi alert.
Barry Lyndon would have to be one of my favourite films i've seen recently but The Shining for example is not my favourite. Guess I better unzip now :D

My experience with The Big Lebowski was that I actually watched a great deal of it then nearly left it. But something kept me watching.
It's definitely one that grows on you, I thought it was rubbish at first but gave it another go and whilst not one of my favourites it's pretty bloody funny film in some parts.

Just because you say it was crap doesn't mean it is.

Incorrect. I am the authority on all that is stylish and with taste.

I agree on this point Shawshit and Avatar made money but people who have brains have noticed that lots of idiots say these movies are good but they are not and hence they are overrated.

You can say the same with music.

I am also an authority on music and I can confirm that One Direction are shit. But they are successful.

Please don't ever say "art is interesting" and then try and back up your point by referring to One Direction again. They're not the same thing. Thanks.
