I think Gunstan, despite his age would make a massive difference.
Forward line playing coach and stays on after retirement.
Our forward line has no leaders, hence why they have no idea where to lead, giving miss nowhere to kick other than just bomb it in and hope.
He would be making Cox run to the right spots and not just stand still.

I'd rather hit the draft & try to fix the cap mess that hangs over us.
I don't mind Gunston as a player. Just not sure how long he will be at the top of his game & I don't believe we should be topping up.
Not where our list is at in my opinion.

The more and more I see this (and pies looked to have cooked it the most) the more and more I believe the people who say clubs are paying average players way too much. Tom Phillips is an average AFL player, the average wage is 380k, which is probably around his mark, maybe he should get a little more, but he’s no where near 500k.

Richmond seem to have embraced the NBA style of paying players, pay your stars, move on your average players who want big contracts, and fill their spots with cheap rookie listed players or young players who you drafted 2-4 years ago on modest contracts still.

I didn’t think it’d work in the AFL given list sizes and 18 players on a field as opposed to 5. But here we are.

The way we have used our rookie list has shitted me to tears for 3-4 years now, we left ourselves no options but to keep some of these players by keeping ones we knew weren’t good enough around cause “side by side” and “could come back from injuries”, hopefully the club has learnt (I doubt it cause jobs for the boys). Go find the best winger in the state league, I’m tipping they could average 15-20 in the AFL, but would be a better ball user than Phillips, much cheaper and we wouldn’t have the problems we currently have with Treloar and De Goey who makes up for the 7-8 less touch we’d get without Phillips.

Tom Phillips is a below average player in virtually all the categories that REALLY matter.

With both Phillips and Treloar, it’s pretty clear that we’re either going to have to accept a sub-standard trade deal or we’re going to have to pay significant amounts of their future wages.

Those among us hoping that we’ll get full-value trade deals AND significant wages savings are set to be very disappointed.

I’d rather take a monetary hit than a trade hit but unfortunately the cap is the cap.

Remembering we had a few players down on form last season. If the following was to happen could we get back to top 4?
If we trade Treloar and get an early draft pick and grab a ready to go young kid.
If we trade Phillips and pick up Gunston after some other dealing.
If Grundy gets back to 2019 form.
If Sidebottom is back.
DeGoey stays injury free and improves consistency which takes pressure off Cox.
Tyler Brown comes on.

Howe back will be huge, as well. We haven't seen Bianco and Rantall as yet, and only a sneak peak at Kelly and Keane. Hopefully Sier can get serious and fit, and more opportunities given to Murphy next year.

I think the biggest if is that even with all those if's, we are still the same old team going into next year, which as we know, hasn't been good enough

You do know gunston is only a year and a half older then treloar right and has never had a major injury ?? .

Yeah he's 29, so get maybe 3-4 years service from him.

I guess the question re Gunston or not is if you think we are a genuine chance at a flag in 21 and 22 before Pendles Steele Howe Roughead etc start looking at retirement.

If there is even an ounce of doubt in your answer then surely going for youth is a better long term option?

How can this possibly be?

I've just been told for two weeks straight, over and over, that we never target anyone, no one ever wants to play for us and the club is a shambles.

If Stephenson Is on any more then 400k that’s ****ing ridiculous

Grundy is a bloody good player, albeit down on his peak form in 2020. Paying him $900kpa is not the issue, we have to pay at least 95% of the cap and it has to go to someone...

... the issue is that we don’t have someone better to pay it to.

Need to be a Bloody Good Player to be better then Grundy when he is at his Best

Theres not a player on the collingwood list that should be demanding 500k plus. When you have won 2 flags in 60 years they need to come up with a new policy.

WTF has the current playing list got to do with our poor flag history?
Why would limiting contracts to $500k, increase our flag chances?
