Just a note on suggestions like these...
The player involved, if contracted, MUST agree to the trade before it can be done.
SO in this case I hardly think Cooney would be happy to leave when he has a contract.

Its for this reason why I think we wont get the deal done.
Melb want 6 and player... Any player we have of note is contracted and will most likely not wish to go there.

Hence why i liked someone else post for us to include a 3rd party.
we give up a second rounder for a player from another club that gets moved to melbourne.

Well this all is based on the premise that both club and player are at odds.

I think the best deal we could get for Cooney would be something like: Compo pick + Cooney for Hawthorn's first rounder (If they're even still interested).

Don't mind it, that would probably net us Reece McKenzie.

No one will give a first round pick for Cooney, no matter how late.. His injury issues and lack of ability to run in both directions (be that medical or by choice) will severely count against him. Should have traded him last year if we were trying to maximise what we would get from him.

You're looking at pick upgrade territory here, IMO.

But Melbourne do get our pick 6. So they still have two pick inside the top 6 and they get Cooney.

Agreed. Add Farren Ray in there as well.... Like I said, we'll find other whipping boys once the current crop has left....
I never really whipped Ray, I thought he was okay other than kicking on his wrong foot too much.
I plead guilty to McMahon and Power though, I always seem to take it out on players I consider a little weak. It's funny because I never really disliked or pounded Eagle.

This would be my focus as well. Try to get a pick around 15 - 18, potentially using the Higgins compo and ???? ... Get Lever/Durdin at Pick 6. Get McKenzie at 18 (say). Add in Talia, Roberts and a fit Roughead and our KPP stocks beyond 2015 are looking good. Some potential pain next year, but longer term gain...

Eagle was the most missed player out the group that retired when he did. Not in terms of history or significance or games played etc - but purely from an on-field perspective. We've really struggled to replace his run and carry....

Well they are getting Ryder....unless Ryder Walks then they have to give something up to make the deal happen.
Ryder and his management remain confident he'd win a breach of contract case, in which case Port would get him for nothing. They've just tried to do the right thing by offering up a deal for him.
I'd wager Essendon will eventually cave. Just as they did with Crameri last year. A little different with Ryder being contracted, but I doubt they want to get into more legal crap.

yes well if Cooney is really on the table, then we need to maximise that and make sure we get a late first rounder. It gives us insurance if we can't get one of the big 2. A second or 3rd rounder for Cooney does not get the job done.

The 4 most maligned players in the past decade all out in the 1 season.

Higgins, Cooney, Jones and Gia (although his love was restored).
Throw out Austin to make it 5!!

You have overlooked Brennan Stack (Austin overtook him for mine, this year).

I loved Ports comments on the Ryder situation. Slapped Essendon for being stupid, slapped them for the ASADA Legal thing and then slapped them for requesting unrealistic players in return for Ryder...

Should be more clubs out there slapping Essendon for being dicks at trading time...

Agree, he came as a purely outside player. Exactly what we got him for, he was lambasted as being soft for it. Then he turned into a run-with type player and put his head over the ball no problems.
People will still deride his career but I reckon he was a fine player for us, and even though we lost Monty it was a trade that worked both ways.
We certainly could do with a player of his ilk now.

I haven't watched the U18's as closely as some. Most phantom drafts I've seen have him somewhere between 15 - 30. But rising at this point....

We've got to give it a go....

Agreed. Lots of ifs and buts around trading time... I can see Cooney agreeing to go to Hawthorn, but not to Melbourne (strange that....)

Holy Crap - just noticed. Have we really added nearly 50 pages since, what was it - Sunday when we clocked over the 1000 page mark....

Bloody hell guys, shouldn't some of us be working/studying or something ???? I know I should...

Annoys me how people say Ray was a wasted draft pick. He's had a solid career.

Draft order in 2003:
1. Cooney -219 games
2. Walker - 179 games
3. Sylvia - 163 games
4. Ray - 197 games
5. McLean - 157 games
6. Bradley 117 games
7. Tenace 59 games
8. R.Clarke - 85 games
9. Trotter - 7 games
10. R.Dunn - 8 games
11. Waters 120 games
12. Ry.Murphy 48 games
13. Stanton -226 games
14. F.Watts - 6 games
15. Chaplin - 185 games

This is true. But Ryder has said he wants the club to be compensated fairly. I think Essendon is spot on that pick 17 does not cut it. But their player requests are silly. Port can go through the whole legal crap, but no one wants it.

I think Cooney and pick 26 to the Hawks for their pick 17. Works. For us anyway.

As a few of us have mentioned on here previously, cooney has been exploring his options for weeks, but as of late last week, had come up empty. Id expect him to generate some interest later in the trade period.

Minson has also gone through the same process, but I have no idea if the club is willing to trade him or not.

He's been a reasonable player, but nothing more. Clearly best 22, but bottom end of that - which is where people start to believe it's a waste. High pick and all that, should do better than just reasonable. But this highlights the difficulties with drafting - you can have good picks, but not the talent in the areas you need.

But if you get 200 games out of a player, you can say you have done well.

If Cooney wants to go as well then great! This trade/draft period could go down as the one where we clear all the dead wood and one's who won't carry us forward and get in players who actually work hard.

We're losing all out whipping boys though
You forgot Matthew Boyd ...... Melbourne could use him for a kicking skills coach :)

The talk is that Cooney could be part of the Port deal with Essendon to get Ryder. Essendon want a player, they want Wines or Wingard of course. There is talk that the dogs may consider moving Cooney for the right deal and I reckon the media guys have joined the dots.

The issue I have with it is that Port will still have to give their pick 17 to Essendon. So that leaves us with their pick 37! Now unless there is massive issues with Coons and the club then that's unders for a 27 year old who still has his pace. If we can conjure a late first rounder for Cooney and there are issues between him and the club I would take it.
If Essendon are interested in Cooney the deal should be pick 17 to us Cooney and a couple of 2nd rounders to Essendon.
They will need the extra picks too with the players going out and the draft exclusions.

Not every draft is equal though. If you blew the 2012 'Macrae and Stringer' draft you'd be spewing.
