Exactly. Just look at the benefit Geelong have from there own VFL team. THey are able to play there youngsters in the VFL without needs to play them in the AFL before they are ready. People always say geez the kids Geelong play slot straight in straight away when they go up to the seniors. We will be able to do the same by playing Cordy and co in the 2nds till there bodies are ready for the demand of AFL.

No way I would even contemplate a 2nd rounder for lonegan. 3rd at best. Or Straight swap with Cooney or tutty.

This guy is in a different stratosphere compared to those guys. Bloke made the all australian squad this year for **** sake. Need to improve our list by aggressive trading and drafting. Plus we might not be able to continue to to nail draft after draft. Going to fail at some stage, might as well ease the load on our young defenders and have them play on the 2nd and 3rd tall if need be. Can swing Roberts forward too if we still think Moz is in the best 22 next season.
He is 30 years old, no thanks

Lonergan was in the All-Australian squad in 2014....but we'll just swap Tutty for him? Good deal if we can pull that off!

Mature defender = yes. Mature defender that will cost a high pick = no.
QFT - I really like Lonergan but Geelong would (rightly) command a pretty good deal for him

And your point is ???

You said he would cost peanuts just stating he would cost a second rounder not peanuts, I think my first post covered my concerns over him haven't said whether we should or not but he will cost a second rounder.

We won't be giving them a 2nd rounder straight up. Could be similar to the lake trade though.

I believe it would need to be a second rounder or a Lake style in that we give picks 27 and 45 and receive Lonergan and pick 35

Our 2nd and 3rd rd picks for Geelong's 2nd and Lonergan.

The beautiful thing then is we can use Geelong's 2nd rd (p35?) and Jones to upgrade to Carlton's P28.

Nett outcome in Lonergan and P28, and out Jones, P27 and P45. Effectively Jones and p45 for Lonergan
I have no idea why Geelong would be interested in any of these lonergan trades.

To be honest I am happy to do

Lonergan + 35
for 26 + 45

Thats a fair and equitable deal. As people said we get a max 2 - 3 years from him. Lonergan can walk for free next year if he wants. Geelong might as well get the compo they can.

Plus we trade 35 and Cooney or Jones for 28.

We are not in the stage to be drafting 30 year olds. No premiership window in our next 2 years. This will be the wrong move in my mind, don't care if he's been all Australian. If we finished 3rd on the ladder last year, o.k but we didn't and thats my point we are in rebuild, no 30 year olds, keep going young and build a team for the future, be the next hawthorn and geelong, stick to the journey you have started, no value in Lonergan whatsoever.

This is the sort of circumstance I'd be happy with a 30 year old.

So we trade Cooney coz he is old and not part of our future but draft in Lonergan?

Bringing in a guy that has 3 years at the very best and won't be in any future finals team

Wow

Think people are missing the point here.

Lonergan would be brought in to provide support and ease the pressure on our young defenders, not necessarily to play when we're having a crack at a flag (whenever that may be).

Sometimes you need a few experienced heads and Lonergan is a quality player.

The idea would be to fill a KPD hole while a younger player develops. Cooney aint a Key defender

Maybe in the eyes of the supporters who maintain that Talia and Roberts are ready to take the baton and run our defense. It's clear that the coaches - rightly or wrongly - entirely disagree. It's pretty clear that they think we have the pieces - in Cordy, Talia, Roberts, Roughead, Wood and maybe Lever - to take us forward, but they aren't ready yet. An experienced, premiership defender with a wealth of knowledge and a few years of very good football will a) take the edge off the brutality our defense is currently copping, b) keep our young boys out of the firing line while they develop (and while we sort out issues further up the ground), and c) help these guys develop into legitimate key defenders.

There is merit in bringing in somebody of Lonergan's standing if the coaches think that none of these players are ready (which I believe they do) - but I do agree that it's probably not worth what the asking price for Lonergan would be.

Pretty sure Cooney can't play as a key defender.

Wake up.

Oh so the age thing is just a player by player issue.

30 year old KP who will take the spot of a developing kid and won't make us any better by himself AND will cost us overs to get him

And I need to wake up?? Lol
