Odds are at least two of our rucks are fit for most games and Trengove would be a break glass in case of emergency ruck and would mostly stay back.

Just think we'd better spend elsewhere or draft than address a lesser need. Our rucks all had massively interrupted years so surely they get better next yr. IMO.

That would come into the thinking too - would any ruck cover we bring in be better or worse than Campbell? If he was on another list I'd say we'd be discussing what he'd cost to bring him in.

If we have committed to Trengove and he to us then that tends to explain media reports that we were pressuring Lever for an answer. I doubt we'd want both.

So if these reports are correct it would appear we aren't getting Lever. And that may not be a bad thing.

There are going to be folks concerned that Trengove is just average and we should have targeted Lever.

1 - Trengove is actually a serviceable backman and is a clear upgrade on Fletch, Young and Collins while being more durable than Adams. So he improves our list in an area of need.

2 - Trengove also offers much needed mature ruck cover. Two birds one stone. Signing Trengove as a FA stops us spending/wasting resources on a ruck and a back (Lever for instance would have cost multiple high picks)

3 - People should look back on when Tom Boyd was traded in - and I don't regret getting Tom as it won us a flag. The alternative could have been we took a high pick for Griffen and used the two top ten picks to draft a similar level player in 2m Peter and ironically Lever. (Both players we'd been rumoured to be into)

The opportunity cost of trading high picks, particularly when you have a gun drafter in Dal, should not be underestimated.

TL DNR: Getting Trengove makes a lot of sense on a number of fronts, and in a lot of ways is the perfect FA signing

Plus Lever doesn't really take the gorillas anyway.

Marcus Bontempelli was solid without being consistently brilliant. Jack Macrae and Luke Dahlhaus found plenty of the ball but hardnut Tom Liberatore, off contract next year, was also among those to struggle. The Dogs slipped from sixth to 16th in clearances. There has been industry speculation of tension in their recruiting and list department.

Maybe I'm reading too much into dear old Jimmy's neat and tidy little snapshot of our season, but I love the glib tone..."and Tom Boyd had mental health issues" which is described with all the seriousness of somebody breaking a toenail.

Campbell is a better than average back up ruckman. His actual tap work is quite decent and I agree that he's the exact type of ruckman we would look at to bring in from another club. The main problems are his durability and the fact that he is the back up to below average ruckman which exasperates the issue. I still think he comes good and surprises people next year. We all know how long ruckman usually take to click and he's getting to that age. He has obvious mobility issues, but I think Bev needs to understand that the removal of 3rd man up might force our hand to change our strategy up a little.

I feel like you're attributing sub-text to something that's not necessarily there. I read the same thing and didn't see it as a trivialisation of the issue. It's just a throwaway line describing what happened without going into it in any more depth than necessary.

Just had a look over at the Port board for their sentiments on Trengove, it seems like they can't speak highly enough of him. Very grateful that he stuck with them through the tarp years, is apparently an excellent club man. I'm really warming to the idea.
