Strategy Trade and List Management thread 4 (Be sure to huddle around your transitor radio at 11 am Edition)

Is the Stringer situation beyond repair?

  • The club clearly want him out the door.

  • This was just a shot across Jakes bow as a means of motivating him.

  • The club is clearly a rabble. Sack Macca!

  • This is just the first play in massive trade that we are not yet privy to.

  • This is a game of blink and Jake and Conners just blinked.

  • Its time to move on a negotiate the best deal we can.

  • I felt sad for Jake on that stage today.

  • We've warned you about creating polls Norm!

  • The Jack 'Armageddon option' Watts option

I hope there's more to this than just a young bloke not being committed to training. Because if that's all it is Bev can go with him.
Severely disappointed. You don't trade someone like Stringer, you find a way to motivate him.
Safe to say there would be IM, Bevo alluded to all Jakes challenges and acknowledged the difficulties but wouldn't be drawn into specifics. At some point in time Jake needs to be held accountable for his behaviour and professionalism and given he's out of contract next year it may as well be now? No player should be above the team no matter how talented. Who knows if we don't get the top ten pick we're after he may stay and this may be the catalyst for his turn around.

Mate it's been all over the place

Several people in here will back that up
No one knew that was true, though and easy to say that now that he's signed.

There's 9 winners at Flemington at this Saturday and I know who's going to win them all. I'll send them all through to you at 6pm Saturday night.

Do you think they haven't tried?
Stringers motivation levels aren't anything new. Obviously his private life recently hasn't helped his cause, but surely you can't think the club hasn't already tried to motivate him. They nudged Cooney out the door because of his influence on Stringer. They've been trying to motivate the guy since day one.

Professional sports is littered with super talented people who try to get by on talent alone but never reach their peak because they don't have the mental drive. Even when they are popular players. Stringer may well be one of those people. He's a freak. I would love for him to not go. But I honestly have never seen him bust a gut like Macrae, Dahl, Bont or Wallis. Hell, even Dickson goes harder. They routinely run themselves into the ground, but you can guarantee Stringer will still have plenty left in the tank at the end of a game. I don't think it isn't just training that's the problem.

Successful teams around the world tend to not keep those super talented but not hard working types. They sell them while they still have good ccurrency and move on. It's a gamble, but more often than not it pays off.

With any luck, he'll stick around and come good. But it's going to take a considerable effort from him to turn himself around. Just like physical abilities, mental ability is also something people are either born with or without.

Mate look back Pann or Fronk has been saying it for weeks

North even admitted it early last week

It's been fairly wide news it was done

Two things our list lack terribly:

Goalkickers
Speed

So get rid of someone who has both, ffs. This news has totally killed my mood.

More things our list lacks terribly:

Players that can kick
Forward pressure
Desire and hunger

Jake kicked 24.26 for the season and is statistically THE WORST set shot in the comp converting at a putrid 30%

He also lays a whopping 1.8 tackles per game.

Jake is by far and away our second best player on talent behind Bont but IF we get a good deal at the trade table I for one won't be sad to see him go.

What have we done?

What has jake done? He was stupid, had kids too young, failed to meet Bevo's standards. I'm assuming it's Jake's fault until I get evidence to the contrary.

Losing Stringer makes it even more important to try and find a forward. Lever seems an unnecessary luxury at the moment.
Lever would be rolled gold, and a ready made replacement. Pretty sure Boyd is the fwd we're banking on, wouldn't mind a quality crummer down there also.Adams an Wood can spend time down there too, depending on match ups

I'm resigned to the fact Stringer's gone.

Clearly there's more going on behind the scenes. But I'm slightly alleviated by the fact that I have a lot of faith in Bevo's assessment of the situation, and that we've exhausted all other options beyond taking this step. At the same time, I don't think our club is foolish enough to not appreciate the full value of his on-field ability.

I've also got confidence that we'll get a good trade deal for him.

The door's open for him to return if we don't get the trade deal for him, but I'm pretty confident we will.

It's a shame because his unique talent is fundamentally exciting and me like anyone want to see him stay, but at the same time, I'm actually a little bit surprised at the lack of faith in Beveridge's judgement in the whole situation, a situation we would know 1% of the true story.

It's irrelevant until he's signed and your a 50/50 chance of getting a guess right with "sources".

You got it wrong with Stringer, it happens the other way too.

It's a tough call but those sentiments are right. If it is something repeated and they have had discussions it may be a straw that broke the camel towards the end. I genuinely feel for you guys and gals as a supporter base as you experienced the highest of highs and Stringer was certainly part of all that. It may be hard to see reason about the decision but Bevo coming from Hawthorn and their period of dominance would require total buy in. Bevo has probably brought that blueprint with him and it may be the right call. Certainly wouldn't feel like that right now but time will tell. Your club has to make the absolute gut wrenching decisions to stay professional and successful. Once you get a taste as a supporter your expectations increase and you demand success and so you should. Bulldogs should be up and about next year and I wish you all the best. What you get in return just might be the answer to take you back up another 5% and winning enough home and away to challenge again.

Someone lift us up with some serious trade targets because we cannot go to the draft and get bent over in a stringer trade

Get a good pick for Jake and use the cap space on Rockliff?

I dont see a great deal else in which we come out equal.

Like (and nobody rip my head off) but players like Watts, Tabener, Menzel etc might "somehwhat" help our forward line recover. I dont see any straight fix though. Maybe Adams and JJ both move forward.

I dont think their is any great answer we want to hear though.

Many here believed that 2017 was an anomaly and it'd be back to business as usual in 2018.

But I believe a seismic shift in playing group / off field personnel is necessary if we are to really become a significant force again.

It's like we need a new spirit, a new way, a different togetherness after what we achieved in 2016.

We do not want the group to turn up in 2018 with the same inability to win the big moments and same fatiguing and lack of intensity for the full 4 quarters.

I believe a circuit breaker is needed. Sometimes big decisions have to be made. And with that comes risks.

Moving on a champion is one way. Another is for the player to have a complete change in the way they go about football.

None of us want to see Stringer blossom and flower at another club, but neither do we want him to continue his current output any longer.

Holding onto the idea that said champion player with outstanding potential will come good for us is fine in theory but what if he doesn't?

And now is the time to do the deal. Because we may well end up with very much less if he walks in 12 months.

To get an A grader to the club you normally have to give up an A grader (unless uncontracted)

IF there is a potential champion player not playing to his ability and not taking seriously enough the need to get the absolute best out of himself through sheer hard work and professional development, then I think the club would be negligent in not considering options on how to improve our list.

I desperately hope Stringer stays and takes up the challenge to drive the group to new and higher levels. It's someone like him who can be a leader and who can mould the younger players to be better people and players.

He can be a truly great influence if he chooses to be.

Beveridge has been awful all year. His judgment has taken a dive from 2016

I had no sources on Jake I was simply stating what I hoped would happen.

I had no sources on Kelly either it was what was being said by North themselves

Despite his knees .. maybe menzel is a target ... ugh

Massive risk with knees obviously and provides zero forward pressure.

Still kicked 38 goals this year.

I feel as though with a forward line (of any kind) you either need a forward line all of which are absolute stars or a workman like forward line which brings the ball to ground and harrasses and pressure.

For instance GWS have forward line full of "a graders" or washed up players so all of them are front runners but provide zero forward pressure between all 6. Whereas our 2016 forward line was workman like and did its job.

Id consider stacking our midfield with stars that can push forward in addition to a forward line who does the basics right which is to bring the ball to ground and pressure.
