Wallis will always be there with a handful of other players in 2015 that Bevo figurez out how to better used and play some career best form.

When I think of his 2015 season I think of players like him finding a niche on the ball and rotating forward after being used out of position as a winger and tagger in previous years, much like Matty Boyd (All-Australian half back), Liam Picken (forward/mid career form after being wasted as a back pocket or tagger in 2014), Murphy (rose to the occasion of being captain and was also All-Australian) and Bont (2nd year player helping our ball movement and ridiculously underrated for that season).

As others have alluded to he was very much part of the soul of those early Bevo year and it feels weird he missed out, especially as he also didn't play in the 2014 or 2016 flags.

A Bulldog through and through.

Louis Butler and Charlie Parker have been informed that they will not be offered contracts for the 2023 season. We thank Louis and Charlie + wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

Maybe I am.
But an argument of "we sucked so bad previously you should be be happy we only suck a little bit" isn't all that persuasive.

I want us to be a major force. It seems that is a minority opinion amongst our support group.

Agree. Totally agree.

All I'm saying is perspective. Not saying we were poor for decades so let's just be happy with our recent success, just saying sometimes it's good to take stock. We've done really well in the 2000s, we're now longer considered to be a minnow or have a 'tragic' history, we are a force, we are respected.

Of course we need to get better and be striving to be a powerhouse, to win two three flags in a row, but you also have to appreciate the little things along the way.

Wally also did some fine blanket jobs (I remember one game on Heppell). Seemed to cop injuries at the worst possible time.
Probably lucky to get a contract for this year, an average bloke would have been cut but he's so highly though of and so good as a mentor he earned the extra year

Swung for the fences with Parker (think he topped all the agility drills in pre-season) but on field gap was just too big.

Don’t mind having a coach not being in the salary cap. Especially when we’ve got Darcy developing. Could be invaluable.
The soft cap goes up ~$500k pa for 2023 so it becomes a less pressing way to do it.

Oof, think a lot of us were pretty excited about Parker. Wasn't to be it seems. His year was pretty wrecked by injuries - generally we stand by guys like that. A bit of a surprise for me.

So that's five list spots, correct? Martin staying on seems likely...very odd.

Has Wallis retired or we letting him go?
Delisted...

Which brings me to arrive at the following conclusion.

IMO:

1. Wallis is still good enough to play a role in the AFL.

2. We believe we can win 1, 2 or 3 of the next three flags. Short to medium term success is realistically within our reach and we honestly believe this.

3. To summarise those above points, we can accurately conclude that we aren't in a rebuild mode.

As a result of the above, Sam Power and co obviously believe that the players we are maintaining on the list are more valuable to us than Mitch. Sam Power and co must be optimistic the likes of Butler will make it and McComb will improve.

Edit.

I just saw we delisted Butler.

😂

Yeah Wallis was a phenomenal defensive midfielder back in 2014, he was just blanketing his opponents while getting a lot of the ball up until he broke his foot because someone stood on it.

Parker probably just a bit too raw and unlucky with injuries, that combined with being a mature age rookie and it was a bit of a perfect storm. Had a lot of qualities that I liked but I guess it just wasn't to be.

So our current wing options (outside of Treloar and Smith, who I assume will play more inside/forward in 2023) are Bailey Williams, Roarke Smith, Lachie McNeil, Anthony Scott, Laitham Vandermeer, Robbie McComb and Dominic Bedendo.

Hopefully Bedendo and McNeil make a leap this pre-season.

It's not exactly pleasant reading, hey. I'd argue that McNeil (too low production for the position) and Vandermeer (far too chaotic to be seen anywhere but inside 50) aren't even really wing options, and I'd rather stab my eyes out than watch McComb play wing.

I think Hannan and Macrae will play a bit there. Maybe one of Dale/Richards/Daniel. But I think we definitely need to pick up an outside leaning mid through the draft.

Archy Jones was playing wing in the vfl
another option to look at

This is a pretty surprising stance on a 21yo with two years in the system (and one AFL game) TBH. His game at AFL level this year was not good but his VFL form was consistently good-very good in a variety of roles. He is a limited footballer but has quality running power and accumulation on the outside without compromising on defence - and he has good size. As I said, I don't expect him to make it because his weaknesses are limiting but you need depth across the ground. ATM Roarke Smith looks like being a first-choice wing unless we play guys like Treloar/Smith/Williams in secondary positions. That's a problem.

To be frank with you, the idea to "take a punt on someone with high potential on a 1yr contract" gets us nowhere because if a player is available at pick 70 in a bad draft they either (1) don't have high potential; or (2) are a long way off AFL ready and won't benefit from only one year. Arty Jones is a good example here - he is so far off AFL level based on his VFL form it isn't funny, and Butler is clearly ahead of him in the pecking order. We've already lost one wing that's clearly ahead of him. If you're worried about what it says about our season if Butler is getting games...what would it say about our season if Jones is, provided he doesn't rapidly improve?

I'm not really fussed whether he is delisted or not TBH, but I think there is a reasonable argument against booting him given the circumstances.
He’s had 3 years on the list and played 4 games but yeah he should still have improvement in him of course. I watched most of the VFL this year and I’d say he was more solid with some good games thrown in, but even at that level he has zero ability to hit a target. Plus he’s slow and small, it’s not a mix I want on our wing tbh - he absolutely tries his guts out and I respect that but he has no attributes to step up to the level.

I agree wing is a huge issue and I hope we use one of our first two or at least 3 picks on a specialist winger with speed & a long kick as we’re desperate for one. But even as dire as it is I’d have the following options ahead of him -

My starting wingers would be Williams & one of Baz/Treloar who need to make a wing their own even with Dunks out they’re still going to have to spend a considerable amount of time there. McLean who played some time there in the Freo final could also make it his own.

Roarke is obviously next in line and may even play round one, Bedendo is coming fast and is already ahead of Butler. McNeil & McComb whilst I don’t like on the wing spent a lot of time there this year and I would have them over Butler in a heartbeat. Jones yes is a mile off but honestly if I had to have one play a game I’d choose him, at least he has a smidge of upside.

I’d run JJ or VDM through there before Butler, hell if we got desperate (or even if we just felt the team would be better off this way) I wouldn’t be against leaving Daniel in defence and pushing Dale to a wing.

So whilst yes we need quality there, but we have plenty of options that could do a better job than Butler if push came to shove - quality is the issue not quantity.

If he’s not going to make it he’s not going to make it, there’s good rookie picks available every year - no matter how weak the experts say the draft is - and we need to be more aggressive in turning them over, keeping the likes of Hayes and Butler on lists for 3 or 4 years is not the way to go about it. They/we tried, they’re not up to it cut your losses & move on.

If there’s really no better options then re-rookie him for a year if we think he’s the best available but at least give ourselves that flexibility by cutting him from the main list

I don't think Macrae can hold his width well enough to play wing effectively.
That's ok, as Dunkley has been removed from the CBA rotation so Macrae can spend plenty of time there.

Scott did ok at times too, and Hannan as the forgotten man will probably get opportunities.
There do seem to be quality outside options projected at every pick we have. Jason Gilbee as a later option for a taller (but light) wingman
