Another possibility is whether the Giants have a few Academy players up for draft this year. They got burnt by the Swans last year.

The Dogs and Lions don't look like top 4 sides and one may not make the finals. There is a possibility of trading one of our firsts and our second to the Giants for their first, likely to be in the 4-6 range.

Thoughts?
Better to let them keep their picks then just get those players a couple of years down the track when we've had a chance to inspect the merchandise. Giants can never hang on to 'em.

Unless they're crap (they end up at Carlton)

We tend to get our GWS players third hand anyway.
Lobb: GWS-Freo-Bulldogs
Treloar: GWS-Coll-Bulldogs
Bruce: GWS-Saints-Buldogs

I’m always a fan of two picks rather than one. For two drafts in a row we got one very high end pick and then some scrap picks at the end, and I’m keen to get late firsts and seconds in to develop into good players. The surest thing can do an ACL any time.

Something i think about the draft are teams are getting much more accurate picking the best players as each year passes especially in the first 20 picks , i feel our biggest need is our next best midfielder and you dont really get those after pick 10 unless your really lucky,

if i thought harley reid was going to be the best player in the game during his career im taking him for 3 first rounders,

For those who dont want to take that risk would you be pissed off if we actually did?

Ed Richards will remain a Bulldog until at least the end of the 2025 season after signing a two-year contract extension at the Kennel.

Taken with Pick 16 in the 2017 National Draft, Richards has played 88 games in the red, white and blue across six seasons.

The contract extension is due reward for the 23-year-old, who enjoyed a career-best 2022 season - averaging 18 disposals, six marks and four rebounds.

Missing just one game last season, Richards claimed the Tony Liberatore Most Improved Player Award and finished 10th at the Charles Sutton Medal.

“In the end, it was a pretty easy decision to re-sign with the Bulldogs,” Richards said.

“I’m really enjoying my footy at the moment, I love being part of such a close group that is keen for success as well as the great support that we receive from everyone inside the Club.”

“Being able to cement my spot in the 22 has been a great step forward for my game and I want to continue to improve to help this team get the best possible success over the next two seasons.

“We’re on the verge of an exciting period for the Club, both on and off field, and I want to be around to contribute as best I can.”

Bulldogs’ GM of List Management and Recruiting, Sam Power, was pleased to lock in Richards for another two seasons.

“Having Ed commit to our club until at least the end of 2025 is another exciting step forward for our list,” Power said.

“Ed has developed his game significantly over the past few seasons, becoming a crucial and dependable player within our squad.”

“Moving permanently into the backline, Ed’s ability to play a variety of roles coupled with his pace and skill has given a different dynamic to the team, missing just one game in the past two seasons.”

“He is a much-loved figure and highly respected teammate with an ability to get even better in the coming years.

The Bulldogs have re-signed a number of key players this month, including Tom Liberatore and Sam Darcy.

Excellent news re: Richards. For mine that locks away are core/cannot lose players who were out of contract this year.

Would like Bailey Williams signature also.

I think he is going to be a very good player.

Maybe a go home factor for him? Hope not as he still has more to give

Am I missing something with these 3 first round picks, or are we talking about the 2 we have this year and next year's first?

FWIW, assuming those picks land in those spots, I'm not sure a club would even trade say 10, 12 and 14 for Reid.
And I wouldn't do the trade either from a dogs perspective.

It's rare to trade out a pick 1 and North only did it last year as they knew they would still get the players they were targeting.

I agree.
To give up the #1 pick, one would need to be a top 5, the other a top 10 and the third a top 15. 3 picks > 10 won’t get it done imo.

With Bailey Williams turning 26 this year, how likely is he to get considerably better than what he has shown already? I like him and really want him to do well and of course there are examples of players who do get better beyond that age, but I'd think they're more the exception than the rule.

He doesn’t have to get better, just back to his best. He was genuinely brilliant in 2021. If he does take off it’s no harm really but I’d still prefer to keep him

I agree with this. The flip side is you see fewer guns coming out of the rookie draft versus 10 years ago.

Agree. I think he has peaked or is close to it. A solid regular in the seniors, definitely worth keeping, but never likely to be in our best 10.

You clearly have a very different memory to mine. And the umpires too, who didn't give him one vote that year.
I used to think he had a higher ceiling but I think this is just about it.

Still, it's 107 games and counting for a player we got with pick 48. I'll take that.

Surely other media will report on Richards' extension while throwing in the "Pies link" - it's very much de rigueur for his career.

I'm sure it keeps McGuire up at night that a name steeped in Collingwood tradition has no intention of playing for Collingwood. The only snippet I saw of his Classified show a few weeks ago, he made the point that it was a milestone anniversary of the birth of Lou Richards.

The more intriguing thing for me is that a young man in RW&B who has Greek ancestry has the brightest shock of red hair in the AFL. But then again, Beveridge is part of the Greek TOC too, along with several of young Ed's antecedents, so there you go.

Bit of a joke that RDB didn't get a gig in the Italian TOC too, even though he was a selector. If he isn't a better player than half the team chosen...

I love Ed’s hair. We have a couple of ginger nuts, TOB and Baker, but Ed blows them out of the water. Goes well with the jumper too.

A couple years ago, I had figured he’d be on the trade table and Collingwood might give us a second rounder on potential. What a player he’s become since then, and a loyal one.

Not sure medium defenders usually poll too well, how did he go in the BNF? That would probs be a better indication.

He was a brick wall in ‘21, unbeatable one on one (Brisbane game stands out when he won us the game with his 2 on 1) strong in the air and fantastic long kick out of defence.

Hasn’t hit those levels since but he’s still one of the better kicks in our team IMO, his low, flat long 55m bullets stand out like a sore thumb in our team of sky high 30m kicks. I wouldn’t lose sleep if he left but I’d much prefer to keep him and back the coaches to get him back to his best

He’s a midfielder, not a defender.

Bevo has played him as the second or third tall defender -clearly a role he is not suited to. I recall him being matched up Jeremy Cameron and Mason Cox at times, no wonder he has struggled when the team struggles.

Putting him on the wing is going to suit him better, he’s a beautiful kick and a very good mark. You saw what he did outmarking Ashcroft at the end of the Lions game.

Give him a chance to learn the position, and he will get better.

Hmmm. Three different perspectives. At least we all agree that he's worth keeping.

Sorry to break it to you and the umpires apparently (weird flex) but Williams was a gun in 2021.

Terrible shot for goal, though, IMO.

Id love to see his career goal kicking stats.

We need to improve our 22 and our depth. I wouldn’t be looking to get rid of current best 22 players unless they want to go. One of our biggest issues at the moment is our depth has seriously fallen away. Just look at Footscray the last year and a half they have dipped and in the same period the senior side has.

Retirees and depth players with no scope to improve is who I would be moving on. If players like Williams and Scott end up in the 2s next year that’s a good sign for us it means we have improved our squad.

I wouldn’t be trading our two firsts this year unless something very very tempting comes up. Take them to the draft and bring in some more top line talent.

Our focus areas should be wing/outside mid with good skills and some speed, small forward with pace and goal nous, midfielder with ability to play inside and out with some size. Look to use a late pick/rookie pick on a young key defender.

In free agency we should be looking at another key defender. Mainly the two mentioned lately on here McKay or Doedee, especially if we lose keath and Bruce to retirement or even one of them.

Which 2 on 1 was that? He’s been a shadow of himself since the grand final, if losing him means we keep all the guns out of contract in 2025 so be it.

Speaking of which West Coast being so shit surely helps us retain Tim next year.
