DOGS MID ON RADAR

PORT Adelaide and West Coast both have interest in out-of-contract Western Bulldogs midfielder Riley Garcia.

The 23-year-old is yet to secure an extension at the Whitten Oval, but a handful of rivals across the country are monitoring the West Australian.

Garcia has played nine senior games this year around seven VFL games, overcoming the injury issues that limited him across the past few years.
Opportunities have been hard to secure in the Bulldogs' midfield, despite dominant form in the VFL.

Garcia collected 34 disposals, 17 tackles, 10 clearances and two goals against a strong Carlton reserves side on Sunday after being the unused sub the day before and has averaged 32 disposals and eight clearances for Footscray this year.
The Swan Districts product collected 23 touches and 11 contested possessions in his most recent AFL appearance against Brisbane in round 13, but was squeezed out of the 23.

Garcia was selected with pick No.62 in the 2019 AFL Draft, months after rupturing his ACL in the final game of Western Australia's under-18 championship, ruling him out of most of his debut season. – Josh Gabelich

Well, let’s hope he has actually re-signed but it’s just not announced yet

Butters for Garcia... might have to throw in our 3rd rounder to sweeten the deal...

You can look st Carlton's list turnover and see it as a metric of success, but you'd have to examine it more forensically for correlation . How many new players are getting regular games? How many traded/ desisted players are doing well at other clubs? How many of their new players will remain on their list in coming seasons?

Carlton lost Liam Jones in unusual circumstances , but he's in our first team. They got Lewis Young , who has played 5:games this year but is in the VFL at the moment .

That's a pointlessly small sample size, but you get the idea.

If you wander over other clubs' boards most have a bottom three or four revolving door players who get the blame for defeats. Meanwhile, "if only players X could get a game we'd be a better team."

Rather than cut these bottom players there's an argument thst if you can get 50-100 games into them, they improve. Better the devil you know? I can't back up this argument with statistics.

You also have to accept the potential loss of Dale, Wood, etc. types who take a while to come good if you turn the list over more aggressively. Hindsight will say we wasted a spot keeping Bedendo on the list but I was still a massive fan this last pre-season.

I do think we need to be less generous with contract lengths for our fringe players. It’s just unnecessary to all of Poulter, Baker, Scott and Jones contracted for 2025 plus Gards for 2026 already. Hopefully Bramble only getting a 1-year extension despite being a mainstay of the team shows we’re learning this lesson

Anyone find it interesting that others who got their ACLs after Baz are starting to return or train for a return. Surely Baz has a chance over the next month or two?
The thing about this is, speaking strictly from a former sports trainers point of view, everyone recovers at different speeds. Just because player X is able to return to training sooner than usual from a particular injury doesn’t mean player Y will be able to do the same - the speed at which their tissue regenerates and muscles heal and strengthen may be at opposite ends of the spectrum. Some people are just genetically gifted in that respect, which is why injured players can find their time on the sidelines even more frustrating sometimes, because they might see players with the same injury returning faster than they’re able to
