I find it interesting with the ‘around the ground’ statement.
With a three pronged KPF line, one of them should be getting up the ground, and with Jones, Lobb, and JOD/Buss/Khamis/Coffield and a 7 man defence structure, one should be zoning off for the intercept. I think our structure and personnel are not so reliant on a ruck being great around the ground.

Would we be better served with a specialist tap ruckman giving the chance of first use, that is aggressive and fit enough to effectively tag the opposition ruck around the ground. Not a star, just to nullify?

All a ruckman actually needs to do around the ground is be a marking target. Outside run and carry can be left to others

It’s not even necessarily the taps for me, it’s the contested work at ground level. The contested possessions, the clearances, the tackles (English was actually elite at the tackling last year, but has dropped back again this year).

Having an extra onballer to take more of the contested load from Bont and Libba, without costing us any outside speed. We might be able to get away with some more outside or less defensive types at stoppage if our ruckman wasn’t also essentially an outside mid.

You mean like Darcy did on the weekend with 11 tackles.

English had 41 hit outs against Geelong. That’s elite. I don’t know how many were HOTAs but he usually has a good ratio of those compared to other rucks. I know that’s only one game but if he can do that fairly consistently in future then we should make sure he stays.

Naturally questions remain. Where was that Timmy for the previous 19 rounds? Was it just a performance to boost his contract negotiations? Has he banished the demons of previous head knocks? Will he agree to clauses related to early concussion related retirement? Etc.

Sydney and Grundy will be a great challenge so I’ll be watching with great interest. But if it turns out we have got AA Timmy back with a bit of added muscular competitiveness then the timing couldn’t be better.

As always, the hand waving away of the actual, direct value English does with around the ground stuff by saying "well we don't actually need it" as if the fact we'd be just as good as a team if he didn't do that is just bizaree. The mental leaps to pretend that a player doing this well doesn't actually help the team win is just wild. By that logic, we don't actually need Naughton's goals. We don't actually need Treloar's disposals. Etc. etc. etc.

Last two wins have been driven in large part by multiple chains of possession where made that much easier to eventually score a goal because English had wide open space to help drive the ball forward, but it's pointless, apparently.

31 hit outs was by far DeKoning’s best to date, he’d never had more than 20 before (small sample size). The week prior Darcy Cameron obliterated him and Blicavs to the tune of 59 hit outs. So, basically, I wouldn’t read anything into it sadly re Tim. Now if he he has a proper crack against Grundy, that will definitely mean something.

Is this in response to my post? Because I’ve always been clear that there’s a pro/con trade off with Tim. But I’d like to see the other side of that coin with a ruckman with a more typical contested/uncontested style of play, rather than Tim’s more outside mid style contribution, which is essentially a 1/1 outlier across the comp.

It’s always good to have another option for kick-ins though 😃

He was playing against a ruck who has a lot of the same strengths and weaknesses as him and is much less experienced. SDK can’t outbody anyone, so couldn’t use the tactic that is most effective against English and that most rucks can do.

Good point. That will make this week's match-up between English and Gruncy a must-watch.

Does anyone think we might have a crack at Tsatas. A fast mid/fwd who is at a great age bracket. He's not shooting the lights out at Essendon, but he was a high draft pick.

I think Essendon would rightfully ask for a pick similar to where he was drafted - and it's far too early to tell if he's worth that.

His kicking action is genuinely, concerningly awful.

Is Lachie Smith ready to play AFL?

When I watch him play, I see a future AFL ruckman. I would love to try him out for a few games next year but I guess it will be 2026 before he is close to fit enough.
