Am I the only one who thinks pick 17 is about right for Smith? What has he ever done? A couple of good games in a finals series. Since then no top 10 finishes in the B n F and coming off a knee. Take the 17 and move on.

Compare that to Dunkley. A better-rounded player coming off a B n F win.

If the Dogs keep stuffing around, they will lose out like they did with Dunkley.
Yes
Former pick 7 with proven finals performances. It’s not even pick 17, 20+ on draft night. In comparison with Kelly and Ratulgulea trades way off

Put it this way - he was taken at Pick 7 and is still only 23, do you think his value has gone down since the draft? 103 games, 29 Brownlow votes and multiple elite finals performances in that time. He’s never played VFL and is a guaranteed Best 22 player for the rest of the decade wherever he plays

The circumstances around this trade are tricky for many here to accept.

The facts are, IF Smith goes to the national draft he will get to Geelong, they will use the first round pick they’re offering to us will be used to acquire Bailey. So why should Geelong give up anymore?

Just a quick reminder again that Tim Kelly was OOC when traded to West Coast.

Geelong didn't bend over. West Coast player fair and the deal was done early so don't give me any s*** about us having to take one up the tailpipe simply because he's OOC. This is Geelong. They're campaigners.
Nobody here is saying we should "bend over" or not bother negotiating. We should be doing everything we possibly can. At the end of the day, though, Geelong's "good faith" is the only thing that might get us a better deal. They will get Smith no matter what and don't need to appease us in any way, shape, or form. If they don't care about maintaining trading relationships then we will get destroyed in the trade, regardless of how hard we play.

The idea that not getting market value here somehow reflects poorly on the club or Power or our culture is just nonsense. Getting fleeced in trades like Macrae or Daniel or incoming players would be a different story altogether.

Because if they don’t, then the entire system is broken and no one should trade for any out of contract player ever again.

Is the same thing going to happen again in two years when Harley Reid declares he wants to move to Geelong and only Geelong and they only offer pick ~15 for him?

I hope we are very quietly shopping Smith around. There may be another side willing to take Smith on, which may change the certainty of us "having" to accept whatever Geelong offers.

Pretty much..

Both clubs for now just showing their poker faces to get the best possible outcome/advantage. A deal will get done IMO

Will he though? Richmond will have multiple picks as will St Kilda both with CAP room.

If Smith enters the national draft he does so knowing he can be picked up by anyone and this year there are a couple of clubs with substantial capital to take on good young players whilst risking a pick on a developed player in Smith and backing themselves in to turn him around

Ok - but the entire system being broken isn't Geelongs responsibility, nor do they have a responsibility to ensure the system works.

If your scenario happens in two years when Harley Reid declares he wants to move to Geelong, the same question would be posed. Every club has their own best interests at heart, you want to be able to acquire players for the least amount possible. We don't have to like it, but Geelong can get Bailey for nothing more than their first round pick. Whether that first round pick gets to us in a trade or is gobbled up by the draft is neither here nor there for Geelong - in fact, they'd be better off using it in the draft because then they're distancing themselves further from us from a talent POV.

Managers run the system Lachy. Clubs wouldn't want to annoy Connor Sports management group because of the implications it could have on future dealings. It's not right, but it is what it is, in the system the way it is, Smith would get to Geelong.

Forgot which talking head said it, but they made mention of our 2 year deal to Smith showing that we are happy for him to leave as it isn't long enough to show we believe in him. Zak Butters, who is 10x the player Smith is, signed a 2 year extension roughly this time last year! Clueless.

Agree with the above. If at the end of 2026 Butters is out contract snd nominates us, and we have crap picks I won't care.

Smith and his management's conduct thus far paints him as absolutely the type to flatly refuse to play elsewhere and sit out the season. Those teams may have cap and list space but there is no way they use a first round pick on a guy who won't contribute.

Not true, Brisbane called our bluff and traded their first pick. Geelong will do the same by midway through next week, they won't wait for us.

We have no hand in these trades.
Brisbane had two father sons in the first round so had a few balls in the air, Geelong don’t. If they trade away pick one it is a really bad look for them in future trading.

With his mental health history and the strain this would put on his mental health, Smith would have to really think does Geelong really care about me? Bad look in many ways for Geelong.

At the end of the day circumstances will benefit clubs at times.

Adam Treloar came to us for a points surplus. We took advantage of a situation that was advantageous to us.

Where he comes across as a complete hypocrite with zero credibility is when he bashes long term contracts then justifies his boy Horne Francis and his long contract. But what else would you expect from him? Complete tosser.
Hasn't he said JHF long term contract is shit too

Treloar is not even remotely comparable
Are you reading what I'm writing?

I'm not comparing the specifics of the trade, but if you don't think Club A taking advantage of the misfortunes of Club B in both scenarios are comparable then maybe skip the conversation.

We aren't in a misfortunate position though we aren't pushing him out he is OOC which is a very common occurrence
