FYI

Will add a 2024 NAB Draft & Trade tracker thread, stickied.

Tag me when we have a confirmed trade/draft and I will update the thread accordingly

It's very interesting how he didn't have to do a heap of work in his early years due to JUH & Darcy.

2020 - JUH, Bedendo & McNeil
2021 - Darcy, Cleary, Parker & McComb
2022 - Busslinger, Clarke & Gallagher
2023 - Sanders, Croft, Freijah, Smith & O'Driscoll

Very mixed results given JUH & Darcy don't count.

Bedendo, Cleary, Parker, McComb & Clarke are already failed picks.

Freijah, Gallagher & McNeil are positive selections (given their relative draft positions) and the rest are too early to tell. Other than Freijah, there have been no 'hits'.
Problem is they were all covid effected years and all have very little around them that cam on later in the drafts,

This year is the first year where the players had no covid delays to stunt growth

This draft is make or break for Dom Milesi. In a couple of years we will know if he good at his job or not.

Yes. But the whole draft process from scouting, to analysis, to deciding what players we would like to draft are done as a collective team. Dom doesn't have all the power just to pick whoever he wants. Bevo also has some say with player visits etc. If Dom wasn't there, then a decent chance we still would have come to a similar conclusion to the same players.

But yes, with this current team. This is probably the first time they have had a significant draft hand. So this draft, and last years will probably define their legacy going forward. With next year's draft compromised badly and then TAS coming in. We need to get this draft right.

Hopefully they release some behind the scenes vision of them discussing players like they did either last year or the year before?

We tend to track the kids for 3 years so I'm not sure he'd put his feet up at any point.

Darcy was a 3rd round prospect before round 1 of his draft year. He flew up the radar after that game as a heap of scouts were there to watch Daicos, and Darcy was just a wall at CHB.

While Bedendo (55), Cleary(61), Parker (rookie) and McComb (rookie) might be 'failed (though Cleary isn't delisted so jumping the gun a bit) you have to keep in mind the odds of any pick from 40ish onwards coming good is pretty low.

Joel at least evens the ledger on the 'latish pick' scoreboard IMO.

In terms of long term strategy, it was a good move to hit this trade period pretty hard

By all accounts, next year will be difficult, with an unusually high number of f/s and academy picks and a relatively small pool of available higher end talent.

Then the 2026-28 drafts will be the Tasmania drafts, who will no doubt be given a good number of higher end picks

So this year was, in all likelihood, the best for a little while to have a fair chance at a few decent picks.

Bedendo had a lot of injury issues and Cleary is 'neat' so by the standards of where they were drafted they probably did ok.

McComb was a head scratcher and Parker never got going.

I think we see Hynes as a midfielder going forward, and Davidson as a ready to go wing/HHF with pace.
Be fantastic to put Haynes with Libba to learn midfield craft until he can build his tank.

Has Davidson got a body of work as a winger? I've only seen his highlights as High HF. He does have high-level speed and endurance, 2.98 seconds for the 20m sprint and 6:12 on the 2km time trial. We need speed/endurance down our wing, Truck is still a 🚚.
Love that he is the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medalist, high level mature body ready to go.

Charlie Clarke hurts a bit. Is the issue he was a party boy, or did I get that wrong? Maybe there is a correlation there with the 'character' draft we just did?

Or could he simply not play?

For me , he had not much in the way of elite AFL traits.
With his lack of speed and athleticism , he needed some tricks to make it.
Just don’t think he has any.

This draft lot looks a like a good haul. As from what I know of the draft next year it's heavily compromised and weaker than this draft atm. But that's because this draft was so strong.

Confirmed, we have passed on our selection in the rookie draft, and will be looking at train on players.

Ivisic actually went a pick or two after us. Can't remember if it was GWS or Geelong who grabbed him. I know he was one player we were linked to with late picks.

Ivisic and Laidler both just taken
Real shame - wonder who we decide to bring in as train on players?

Phoenix Hargrave (South Adelaide)
Clancy Dennis (Claremont)
Jaxon Artemis (South Fremantle)
Nathaniel Sulzberger (Gippsland Power)
Ollie Warburton (Murray Bushrangers)

These are a few I’d be interested in, particularly Hargrave and Dennis

Ivisic got picked up by Geelong

Not surprised at all that we didn't fill our final list spot in the draft. We haven't used a rookie draft pick in 3 years, instead preferring to keep the spot open for the summer to sign someone in the SSP. Had we held a 2nd rookie spot, it might have made sense to take 1 player but that wasn't the case.

What’s the benefit of picking a train on player instead of picking someone in the rookie draft ? As we may have missed a better player by passing on them in the rookie draft . Example ivisic

The benefit is retaining optionality until close to the start of the season. Particularly if none of the players in the draft were must haves.

Getting a good look at them over summer without the commitment.
