The steakiest of stake knives. He's a VFL player. It would be like us throwing in Charlie Clarke.

Aim higher, Dogs.
People thought similar of Bedford when we were sniffing around at the time he was a specialist sub for Melbourne. Many including me were also against Lohmann as part of the Dunkley trade.
Obviously someone like that isn't going to make up a significant portion of the trade but potentially could break the deadlock between the clubs. Similarly to when we were asking Brisbane for an extra 4th.

Those saying no to a key defender - what happens if Jones gets injured and falls off a cliff due to age? Obviously let’s hope not, but do you really want to rely on Buku and O’Donnell? Busslinger yet to even debut and is more of a third tall anyway.

What happens if English gets injured and Lobb has to ruck also..
What? He's an old school FB if ever I've seen one. That's how he's played at VFL level.
Lobb at CHB helps as well. Buks or Coff can play the 3rd role.

I do hope Mick Warner is doing some investigative work on this Cotton-On deal as we speak. He is our best journo by far when it comes to being a thorn in the AFL’s side. All the others, even the good ones, are so worried about upsetting the regime they never go too hard at AFL HQ. Some journalists are even the AFL’s go to, when they want to get a story out, but nor officially from them.
This idea of one of Geelong’s major sponsors paying and poaching a star player from a smaller club before ‘free agency’ stinks As much as it sounds wrong. There is no way I would trade him unless we get fair (not Geelong fair) for him. Otherwise Richmond can have him.

Good assessment, watching him more this year lot of Brian Lake about him hopefully can continue to get stronger and turn into that kind of player at his peak

Ya reckon? Sheeesh, the thought of him playing at full back on a Fogarty, Daniher, Curnow type scares the living crap out of me. Seems nowhere near that level yet.

He's a fair bit slower than Lake though, who ran a sub 3s 20m sprint IIRC.
But we chased Sam Collins pretty hard who is even slower than Buss, and he just won 2 Suns B&Fs back to back.
Carlton are screwed without the equally slow Weitering who is a gun.

I'm a lot more bullish on Buss than most and I think he's closer to regular AFL football that a lot of posters as well.

Why would richmond want him? He's trouble.

I think we should use the cotton-on deal as leverage in the trade discussions for Baz. Give us what we want i.e 2 x first round picks or we use every avenue possible to raise alarm bells around the legitimacy of the deal.

Curnow and Daniher play higher up the ground,

Fogarty had 1 decent game and it was against and undersized Buku

Hasn't got the speed but very good over head and more then competent in transition with the ball in hand just needs another full preseason and he will explode onto the scene

That would be brilliant.

The whole thing stinks and I'm here for our club to expose it all. Gloves off.

Haha supporters of all teams are funny with their one eyed trade thoughts haha
There is significant complexity often involving multiple teams. All supporters pretend they want equity with significant over valuing their own players and under valuing opposition players.

If there is a rumour and it does not come to fruition, their club is weak, incompetent and a minnow, if it does their is a conspiracy. Throw in an incompetent media who despite their credentials are nothing more than accredited supporters and we the shit show of the trade period that tends to run year round.

We can't cast shade on opposition supporters, we have just as many here exhibiting the same behaviors, with the added spice of challenging posters who are actually in the know, however circumstances do change

This is the thing, not knocking SDK as a talent at all, it just raises similar questions to me as the Barrass attempt.

It’s not that all our options are better, but is it the right use of Baz as an asset given our list.

Jones, Lobb, JoD, Buss, Buku, Coffield and Gardner are ALL contracted.

There are no A graders in that list and Jones + Lobb are getting on but even then, that’s ample coverage.

Yes SDK-Buss-JoD sorts us out long term, but that can also be addressed with an older recruit down the line. We also can’t just assume Jones and Lobb will miss games - probably, but you can’t plan your best/round 1 side around it.

We also used a good pick on Buss, he hasn’t debuted in two seasons, we just signed him on for two more and it’s already difficult getting him in to the side.

Previously I was ok with Barrass as I kind of assumed Buss was on the move, re-signing him means we surely have the view of him being in the side next season (and he looks ready for it).

Not saying any one of them is or isn’t better than Barrass or SDK but how much of a need is it compared to other positions? We have been screaming for a wing and small forward for ages. Need some pace and class at both positions. Surely that would be a better use of Baz as an asset?

I always viewed Busslinger as a Jordan Ridley type, rather than someone who can play on the gorillas but I haven't seen as much of him this year as others.

His kicking is elite.

I agree. Prefer him floating around intercept marking as much as possible.

As someone that was adamant Lohman would have been a great pick up for us, I think Clohesy is multiple rungs below him or Bedford. But as you say, if we’re taking him instead of a fourth round pick, then no issue. He just has almost zero trade value imo.

Simple fact Baz is only one asset. There are multiple assets available including most other players, current and futrure draft picks.

We are not just building a list for next season we are building one for the next 5 years too.

Jones is towards the end, Lobb is over 30, JOD shows potential but not there yet, Buss has not played a game, Buku has significant weaknesses etc so bringing in a competent KPD who still has significant Growth potential is a massive need. I was against the Barrass move as it appeared too short term given his age and body but SDK is the perfect profile of what we need not only for next season but for the next 5.

Yes we need mids and they can come from the resources noted above as well as via the draft and internally through the development of Sanders and Freijah as examples. Same goes for small forwards and defenders.

There are multiple layers of complexity and just attaching outcomes to one asset only is simply not how this works

So....................
Had a quick chin wag with player-manager mate this morning.

Off the grapevine, he has heard some interesting things re: Smith.

Connors specifically told Smith not to go to the Geelong prelim.

That photo of Smith sitting in the Geelong section next to the owners of Cotton On has not only pissed off Connors from a negotiation standpoint but has also raised a few more red flags at AFL house, a really, really bad look.

My mate reckons is this was messy before it's now gone up a notch.

Yes, there’s nothing wrong with chasing a Clohesy type but it’s just as an add on to any deal rather than anything of note. I can’t say I know anything about his game, don’t watch any non-Footscray VFL but a rookie pick who hasn’t played a full AFL game should be seen the same as a third or fourth round pick added to the deal.

The fact that they’ve delisted 7 on top of the retirements of Hawkins and Tuohy suggests to me that Geelong think they can get a deal done just using picks without adding players.

The game has evolved significantly yet we keep trying to view it in the prism of days gone by.

A deep defender does have to be able to defend well 1 v 1. The simple fact is very few teams have gorilla's up forward, they are much more mobile so they need to restrict space and be at each aerial contest to spoil to win those 1 v 1 contests. In fact looking at the top 30 goalkickers this season there is not a gorilla amongst them.

It is defending the modern deep forward that Buss has be learning in the VFL. It also means he will be in a better position to utilise his intercept marking and kicking skills.

Probably the best example of the evolved deep back position is playing this Saturday as the Captain of one of the competing team

Going by this article it didn’t go too well within the club
