I'm surprised there's this much push back on Kennedy tbh. If he comes in, he's not coming in to replace anybody other than be a midfield depth option which is what Macrae is going to be if he stays at the Dogs.

Of course Macrae is a better player, but he's also earning 1.5x the amount and is 2.5 years older. If you're going to pay for depth, it's far wiser to pay Kennedy than it is to pay Macrae.

I'm more surprised its coming from the people begging for midfield depth all last week

Omg we get nobody in u complain we get somebody you complain

It's the Bulldogs way! We were promised Butters and SDK, promised I tells ya. And suddenly it's Matt Kennedy!

But like Harmesy, I'm sure Kennedy will be put to work setting up Bont's new business in Kew in no time!

Anyway, it's an online forum, not sure what you expect?

As a team that hasn't won a final for three years, we sure manage our list like we're constantly contending, don't we? If we would just commit to a minor rebuild which is what we ought to be doing if we're moving on Macrae and Daniel, we wouldn't be bringing in players like Kennedy and Harmes as mature age depth.

I'm okay with Kennedy. Just would have preferred to get a better pick in this draft, by straight swapping Daniel for a pick. IF the rumored trade is correct.

Looks like our hand will be whatever the Cats give us, and two picks in the 30s (Unless we lose Macrae for the 40s). Which sucks, as I feel this draft is deep in positions of need. Also the draft is my favorite off season event. We haven't had a good and deep hand in years.

Macrae is a better player than Kennedy, but I didn't like some of his defensive efforts, body language and pulling out of chases a couple of times over the last couple of seasons. Hopefully Kennedy brings a bit more mongrel if the trade rumor is true.

Why?

Harmes has traded for pick 54 Kennedy will be similar

I know I'm a broken record, but this is exactly what I mean by our list management strategy being entirely confused.

If you are a contending squad, you put your eggs in the 'proven contributor' basket. You persist with club champs and work with them to find their niche. You adapt the game style to suit what you've got. At the trade table, you use your assets to bring in proven contributors who are either in their prime or entering it.

If you are not there yet in terms of talent, you prioritise the draft in everything you do. You push mature players out for draft capital. You don't focus on game style or targeting particular players, you just get as much talent through the doors as quickly as you can at the expense of anyone who won't be there for the next push.

Instead, this is our confused pattern:
  • Make proven contributors redundant by pushing them out of their best position in favour of young guys who aren't there yet.
  • Trade out veteran players once they have started to decline ("sell low").
  • Chase specific attributes to enable us to play a specific game style.
  • Chase high draft picks with significant trade assets.
  • Bring in the fringe players of mediocre teams who are not actually young or particularly good.
  • Spend the first 12 rounds of the season ****ing around with players who aren't up to it yet, then prioritise mature bodies at the end of the season.
We are rebuilding, but we're not, but we're not happy with the role players that we have, but we're not going after meaningful upgrades, but we want to bring in kids, but we have a list profile of ageing stars making "one last push," but we really think that playing fast is our best bet, but actually we want to win the premiership and think we can.

If this isn't a recipe for being a 12th-6th team for the next five years I don't know what is.

Carlton board doesn't seem to be happy to lose Kennedy. Means we should be happy?

Most Carlton fans that I have interacted with think that Kennedy is a player who as yoyoed in and out of the seniors and got a bad deal overall as he was never the worst player.
