AFLW Trade, Draft and list changes 2024

Pretty clear now that, as the quality of draftees improves year after year, there are very few opportunities for recycled players. Especially difficult with squads of 30.

Only 2 drafted this year.

Paige Scott was a unique case choosing to go to the draft and getting picked up with pick 31.
Alana Gee pick 57 Gold Coast to St Kilda.

I think even for train on positions clubs will lean towards new faces thinking young players who just miss out on being drafted have a better upside than those who have been through the system already.

There were 2 delisted free agents as well (this was before draft night).

what actually ended up happening with gee? thought i remembered her being a gun in her draft year
Injuries that have kept her out of action since then. It's good that Gee is getting another chance, for some players it's not easy to get back to the level especially if they have stellar junior careers and have serious injury before their career gets going. A lot of it is not the physical recovery, but the return to play at their previous level is a difficult path. Ellie Mac's injury where it's taken a long time with a rare type of muscle injury that she had, with pre and post surgery and recovery with some injuries you need a good support team. Maybe Gee thinks with a change of clubs she will get back quicker as she is still in recovery I believe.

wouldn't have minded if we took a stab at her but i also have no idea how she has been travelling and i also have no idea who we have in mind for ssp

Who we need on our list is probably another tall utility, and like this years draft next years draft is heavy at the top end of talented talls, a couple out of Victoria, a couple out of WA, and also a couple of QLD girls all going to be first round, or thereabouts, so 2025 a good draft to target a tall.

We could always use more speed and pressure on the list going forward which the game now demands.

I’m looking forward to seeing Grieves play and if we can improve on winning the ball and getting it forward, also being able to keep winning it if Conti is getting blanketed.
That’s probably the one knock I’ve got on Sheerin, she seemed to run her own race around the stoppage and isn’t big on releasing her teammates with handballs.
Hawthorn and their handballs in around the stoppage is pretty impressive more of that with us can bring out the talent in our good Mids and outside players.

I’m still disappointed that we’ll most likely lose Yassir, it’s taken so long to build and improve our list. After Ellie she’s been our most successful draftee IMO and to lose her and Sheerin at the same time would have been pretty deflating for the team.
Of course you need role players but Sheerin and Yassir are threats.
Beruldsen looks like she has a point of difference with her speed and Hargreaves looks a footballer.
I really don’t understand the Scott trade, we need to kick higher scores and Paige has scored 5 goals in her last 20 games.
Hopefully with a new environment she can produce more than that.
Only scoring 442 for the year, bundled outve of finals again and not being able to win a game against any opponent in the 8 we need more threats.
We got some really good talent and KB still has some footy left in her.
With a tougher draw I think making finals will be a good achievement, I just hope they start developing players in more than one role for the team next year, Hicks moved forward to cover Hosking but apart from that I think we missed a trick there in building for the future.

I believe the instruction to Sheerin by our coaching team was to take the game on whenever she felt she could smash through tackles as it was so team rewarding when it came off. Didn't look great when it didn't but was successful more times than not. Yes she is super fit but will be 33 during the 2025 season and you wonder how long the bash and crash will last. As we've seen it can fall away pretty quickly.

Yassir seems pretty invested. Prominent in club media during the recent draft period. As it was said here before, if she still harbors any intent to move on we have a year to convince her that this is the place to be. I think if we have a good 2025 it might be a really hard call to move.

I think Scott might be a really good pick. Very very good mark and kick and whilst she hasn't kicked many goals might be that link player that we badly lack at half forward. So often we needed Katie or Caitlin way up the ground and then had nothing to kick to. Just a natural footballer. We definitely can do with those.

That’s true and I hope so. I really like her she plays in starvation corner and is hungry all game, week in week out and when she gets her chance she makes it count. Pretty unusual conversion rate.
I hope your right about Scott, it does look a little like Ess don’t kick it to her.
Last year Toogood took a heap of marks but Scott was ave up near 6 tackles a game this year Toogood injury and Clarke but Scott’s numbers fell away and wasnt selected for the last few games. Maybe she was fed up with it.
I guess we’ll see, but when she’s on she is hard to deal with. Hopefully she gets her appetite back.

I don’t want to preempt what Grieves is going to contribute in her first season, but she is no bash and crash mid, more the escape artist, which she will find harder in AFLW, unlike Egan though she does know when to move into the oppo and negate HTB to halve stoppage, and her size helps her often get frees for, not sure if size or done deliberately. I’m sure she will adjust her game to AFLW, maybe means more stoppage then quick release but she won’t get caught HTB like Egan and given an inch of space will release Mon or Ellie like no one has done before.

I’d like to see this lineup

Seymour Graham
Lynch Hicks Miller
Hargreaves Egan Dempsey
Scott. McKenzie Grieser
Yassir Brennan

Poppy, Conti, Grieves
Int
McKinnon, Bacon, Ryan, Knoll,Shevlin
E
Hosking, Mclelland,Beruldsen.

It’s not that I think Ellie isn’t doing enough, but I really think there is so much more in her game than what we saw this year and how they play her.
I think she could be like a Kate Hoare for us.

Graham and Egan need to be replaced in that team

Not sure that Hargreaves as the inside mid at U18 level will transfer to AFLW yet, she does equally as well on the flanks and don’t mind her on a wing, to start with anyway, until she matures.

McKenzie is so versatile can play her anywhere, having Egan, Ryan and Grieves as the only support for Mon I think is a bit problematic early days anyway but if this season is a sea change for our game style then development will be > win %.

Bacon needs to use her defence game and pressure skills to work herself into games, she also needs to feed to others as she works on/trains the attacking side of her game as well as her disposal. I think she needs to be down back. Also a consideration, should Ford be an option to be extra pressure forward?, as Yassir is not a 100% game time player yet, but do see that getting actual game time into Knoll has to happen this year also.

Ellie had a pretty good start to the season and then the oppo just sat on her around stoppages. The final against Port for the first time in the season Sheerin started fwd,Hicks fwd Odea ran with McKenzie for alotve the first half, they sat on Conti and it worked against us. We gave them a head start on their own deck, it was coaching moves that failed for us and it really put us behind.
Our fwd line for most of the year was

Brennan
Hosking, Dellaway or Ryan
Grieser
Yassir,Ford

Dellaway is a def stoppage player at best, Ryan looks along way off it at the moment being young and Hosking and Ford kicked 7 goals between them in 20 games.
IMO we need more firepower.
Having small pressure fwds means you have less Ariel threats and the fact is Grieser prefers a chest mark.
I think we should start building our attack around a different player to Brennan.
I think Ellie has the potential to dominate.

In Ellie's draft year she had that wow factor like Centra, but she wasn't a inside mid, or even the more rarer inside/outside mid, she was definitely outside, 'great run and carry, speed, size and marking' and also yes a goal kicker which we don't see enough of this from her. Not too many players can lock down Ellie but the chance is there if she is at the coal face. She is the type of player who needs to be on the periphery as first receiver if played in the midfield, wing, flank, anywhere with space, but has the height to play forward as well. A lot to work on as you say, with mids we are still one short of in our core group even with Grieves being the player we expect that she will be, need another high quality mid that is inside/outside, same as Mon and Sierra. Who knows maybe Hargreaves has the potential to be this player?
