Hawthorn and Richmond are among the sides to have flagged an interest in Melbourne forward Georgia Gall, though the Demons are still hoping to retain the promising youngster.

Clubs are expecting a much quieter AFLW Trade Period this year, after 41 players moved homes last year in a window capped by an 11-club, 12-player, 24-pick deal on deadline day.

List managers across the competition believe the market is more settled as a result of no remaining expansion concessions, an updated CBA, the ability for players to sign long-term deals and the strength of this year’s first ever national draft.

The AFLW Trade Period opens December 5.

Georgia Gall
Melbourne says:
"Debuting in Round 9 2023, Gall played two games for the season and has so far impressed in the early stages of her career.

With versatility across the field, Gall can play across all lines and brings speed and height to her game.

Gall has a background as an elite cricketer, and approaches her training and craft with utmost professionalism."

Definitely worth chasing

I've put this post game Coach's interview from the Port game here, because I felt Ferg was very focused in his post game responses about this being a catalyst of sorts for 2025 - have a listen and tell us what you think (nicely ;) ):

Re: Q on changes to list

"it's our duty to our group to see how we can compliment them (players) what we've got, who we can bring in" "List management is always really important" "So we'll definitely make sure that we come back a stronger list"

We need to move on players that firstly don't have the basic skills, or leave the heavy lifting to others, & lack the physical strengths. There were early concerns in the VFLW season where only 2 of ours Sheerin (24) & Shevlin (16.5) out of 11 players averaged more than 15 possessions.

We can go to the draft and attack this new generation of U18's where the top 2 rounds mostly all have the foot skills, clean hands and defensive game in their DNA that's required for AFLW. These girls will be on the lower payment tier with our cap.

Would be nice to unearth another Sheerin who is explosive, tackles, wins clearance, but doesn't cost much to start with to push out a player or two, players who we are paying too much $ can then seek a trade & we can get in more draft capital.

We can only bring in top established talent if we offer them a top 8 contract either tier 1 (2 players) or Tier 2 (6 players)

You'd think Sheerin, Brennan, Conti, McKenzie, Seymour, Miller, Lynch, Yassir, Poppy, Hosking, Egan are either on or after a contract not lower than tier 2 after this season. Fortunately but disappointingly we don't have to move any of our recent draftee's or injury replacements top ups, to a higher tier, as not deserving. (Reid, Ryan, Wicksteed, Peck, Brown, + Luke).

We currently have, with our injury replacements 33 players. They've just announced they're not increasing list size. We need to cut back to 28 players by the end of trade period in three weeks to take the minimum of 2 players at the draft. Ideally we try and trade out someone like Hosking to try and draft another diamond in the rough with a later pick and we don't trade out 2nd round pick, i.e another pick 30 for a Dallaway/Hicks as will be madness, We need to move past trading in average footballers.

Nice write!

If Hosking and Egan are Tier 2's, we can get better Tier 2 players from the current AFLW pool if we only look for it and make that play. We may be doing that with a Gall from Melbourne perhaps.

I know Egan has some value, but we must seriously look to do better for the 2nd Tier she is consuming. Whilst she is just 24 years of age, will she improve any of her skills from here? Quite frankly they are abysmal at times and wouldn't be tolerated at other Clubs.
