Watching the port Hawth game.
Odea plays as a def on small fwds, sometimes Mid floats forward wins a loose ball in fwd 50 kicks a goal.
Hawth put Fleming forward, she has three shots on goal in 10 min

We don’t do that.
It’s a failing of our coaching dept.

That’s in the second quarter, port had the run of things and they put Fleming forward.

Another player we delisted, Alice Edmonds was named in the All Australian squad (arguably the best ruck in the competition) in season 7 and was runner up in the club best and fairest for the W Bulldogs.
She won the best on ground in our first Dreamtime game.

And I don't mind saying I said back then when we de listed her I thought it was a mistake. She had plenty of potential, as she went on to prove, Well done Alice Edmonds!

Yep good on her. I thought she was a bit limited with us. Not sure she would make us better though, even now.

I would cut

Wickstead. H/F
Eastman. H/F
Woods. Utility
Lavey. Wing
Reid. H/F. Fwd
Hosking. Pressure fwd
I doubt any of these players are Tier 2.

Players who are unproven or with question marks.

*Peck. Key def
*Knoll. Key fwd
Egan. Inside mid
Graham. Key def
Ford. Pressure fwd
Ryan. H/F
Cox. Lockdown def
Courtney Jones. Med fwd
Egan has had a top 5 BnF finish in every year apart from her debut year.
As the season went on we seemed to get less outve her.
I know Ford played every game pretty much but she doesn’t get the ball.
Ryan deserves more games but wasn’t able to make a consistent impact.
I dont know we have room for Cox and Hicks.
Graham at 173 is a little undersized for the big fwds and not quick enough for the small/mid fwds.
Courtney Jones unsighted after Rnd 1… maybe there’s some things going on for her outside of footy 🤷‍♂️

We need more talent.

Wickstead has shown that she can be evasive as a player, and can hit a target by foot, however rarely breaks a tackle, and midfield just isn't her go at this level. Upside is she is only 21, still new to the game, so I would be OK for her to be on bottom tier for another season, although a bit wary of the fact she was never a big possession winner at state level.
Eastman. H/F
As a forward, I prefer Katelyn Cox over Eastman, is quicker and tackles a lot more, the idea of Eastman as a winger is intriguing but at age 26 maybe not, look for somebody younger to grow with a young team.
Woods. Utility
Hasn’t shown enough unfortunately delist. Georgia Gall if she comes in is a true marking target at 183cm.
Lavey. Wing
At 31 and with chronic injury & her footy assets considerably diminished it’s surely time to nudge Tessa towards retirement.
Reid. H/F. Fwd
Reid, a former #5 pick who is not tradeable, at VFL level she averages 14 disposals but only 5.6 at AFLW level and is another bust, don't think a 4th year will change anything.
Hosking. Pressure fwd
We may be able to broker a trade for Hosko, hard at it and tackling machine but below par skills & turning 30 next year. Don’t see her or Grace Egan as playing in a winning finals team and both probably on Tier 2. Trade.

Of the other players, 1 or 2 are probably safe depending on what we can target from this draft. Some players at state level are better footballers, Graham coming from a soccer background is still relatively new to footy, and this is painfully obvious at times, however when limited as a role player she can be hard at it and also athletic but a WIP.

With Jones there are a number of talented FWD/MID types in this draft and with a 2nd round pick we may be able to pick one up. The current trend among the better teams is for many young developing talent to alternate between time on ball and used as lively, quick forward. We will only get better by having more in our team, and can draft either with U18’s or an overlooked player i.e. a 20yo Ava Seton, a VFLW team of the year mid, would be better on our list over a 20yo Charlie Ryan. Ava is the type of ball winner MID/FWD that we could bring in with a late pick and still has upside at her age.

What's probably lost when we think about giving players another chance is that our list is at 32 with Tam Luke's retirement and we need to cut another 4 players to get it down to 28 to have the mandatory two picks in the draft. This is even before trading in any players.

If you watch the teams still alive the quality of footy is awesome and with the exception of Port who are in a real purple patch, they are head and shoulders ahead of us. The ball moves pretty quick and a turnover costs you more than ever.

Have to make tough decisions and have to move on from players just making up list numbers. Hopefully we have some trade targets on the horizon that will make an impact. We have to cut hard IMO.

Peck, Woods and Eastman all delisted now!

Wickstead. H/F
Was happy with Wickstead initially, had a skill set as good or better than more established players, but as toenail63 says, her inability to get clear in traffic had weighed down on her. Unless this is improved considerably, could understand the lack of patience.

Eastman. H/F
Could understand persisting with her another year if there was not a last pick draftee that could replace her via the draft, with equal or better skill set, but looks gone.

Jemina Woods
She showed up at times and made some progress until injured. One for the medical staff I think.

Lavey
Has slowed, is playing bruise free, but had elite preparation and dedication in her favour. Another that the medical staff may make a call on.

Reid.
Just no. Simplest delisting we have.

Hosking
Will be all about the surgery. Think she still has a role in the squad.

Ryan
Think we should see what Melbourne would offer. Former highly rated Stingray, is probably too slow, but has nice skills outside that.

Graham
Making up numbers, is still better than say a Bacon, but only just. Isabel will probably go passed her next season. Desperately need to find a replacement and this position is really the measure of the team in relation to others.

Egan
See what we can get for her by way of trade. She is slowing up, her best skills are mediocre and her rushed skills are terrible. This is another position that measures where our team is at. Her contest work is good, and to be fair, that rates her more highly than say a Hosking. However I can see decline written all over her - get what we can - sell high.

Ford
Definite keeper. Still finding her way, has great vision, which you cannot teach. Still think she could become a mid in time.

Jones is another easy delist for mine.

Cox will be guided by the medicos. Her ace is speed, if that's gone (in relation to the current speed of the game) so is she I think.

Knoll hopeful is a hold and gets a chance to show her marking prowess up forward, or could even train down back to replace Graham - has better hands.

She would have made us better previously - as could have released Gabby much earlier - harder to tell now though. May not have needed Tam Luke at all and could have replaced Montana with someone more capable down back perhaps. Dominoes!

Can't argue with any of that really.

Egan slowing up at 24 gave me a chuckle. I still think she has a role but agree those rushed disposals are a killer. I'm not against a trade if it betters us.

Graham is listed at 176cm and is genuinely every bit of that but I agree we need to be better in that position. Late comer to footy so may still get better. I once heard Andy Dufresne say hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things.

I can't imagine Knoll being cut after keeping her on the list after the 2023 season knowing she wouldn't play until 2025. Mobility will be a big factor. They did get to see her train full on in the last few rounds of the season.

Look at Egan first game to last game - but keep it on the same speed on the replay or you might think you switched to slowmo ;) :tearsofjoy:

So we delisted a player that came into our side for the elimination final? Why?!
Elimination Final: Available players to come into the side.
Courtney Jones, Molly Eastman?, Laura McClelland, Charley Ryan, Charli Wicksteed, Stella Reid, Jemima Woods (now delisted) and Imogen Brown.

Not a heap to pick from. Went for experience with a bit of versatility. Not sure why it matters what game was the last. Maybe the final loss changed a few thoughts.

It's the most important game of the year, not a home and away game.
Apart from Maddie Shevlin with 13, Eastman had 19 points (the lowest on ground). Eastman is 26, so that would have helped.

The speed of the game going up a few notches hasn't helped I guess . Grace was never quick. That was never her go. Stats wise 2024 was her 2nd best season behind 2023.

We usually do well out of trades with Gold Coast. Can we trade for Charlie Rowbottom? She is exactly what we need.

Exactly, that's why you don't play any of the others. No time for experiments.

Eastman finished on the bench and was listed as injured. Played 59%

Other thing I noticed in S7 2022 she was the leading possesion winner for Sydney for the year but came 7th in the BnF.

Maybe she couldn’t stay on Tier 3 payments. It’d be pretty tough.
But to make it to the highest level and play 3 seasons is a pretty good achievement.

Port in some purple patch. Ours was a couple of years ago with 8 games straight without a loss finishing in a draw with North at Mildura that earned us a top four finals spot. I was at our final at Metricon a week later in our loss to the Lions. I never expected we’d win, as not many would, but we had similar momentum to Port. The following week when North got their revenge they won because their star players lifted, which they often did in carrying their team to a win.

North were already on that upward trajectory and are now flag favorites so it shows where you can get within two seasons.

Although Port and Hawks both had the ability to flick a switch that blew us out of the water in one good quarter of footy by playing with a level of finals intensity, that as a team we haven't been able to go to in finals, the club now knows what it will take having been on the receiving end of it. After an injury interrupted season last year it's obvious we have stalled.

As you say we have to make tough decisions and change has to happen where personnel is just one of those. I believe if you were to ask our top players, who give their all for their team every week, what they need to help them, I believe it would be to have the support in players that can lesson that load, free them up, reassign a tag etc. So I agree with you TM2 that we have to cut hard to be able to improve the list.

I hope that we do, but didn't we delist Lily Pearce who also did an ACL?

What will it take to entice her out of there? it would have to be pretty good reason for a dual club champion to move. Gold Coast did have a poor year but also have a bright future. I could name 6 - 8 on their 2024 academy list that are going to be playing in that team in 2 years time.
