If a new coach is on board next year, which is now looking likely, he will be starting from a fair way back with the current list. Wouldn't be surprised of a major clean out and a restart on the list performed. Our list is just so badly unbalanced, with no real excitement about it for the future like say a Carlton's. Some hard work in the off season, along with some tough calls will need to be made.

That would not Shock Me IF We Trade some High Profile Players for 1st Round Picks

COLLINGWOOD is guilty of overrating its players and must address a number of significant list management problems to become a serious contender, according to veteran recruiter Gary Buckenara.

The Magpies slumped to 15th following a loss to Hawthorn on Sunday with pressure intensifying on coach Nathan Buckley. But the coach might not be completely to blame for his side’s struggles.

Buckenara, who helped build Hawthorn’s three-peat premiership list and is a four-time premiership player, believes poor recruiting and list management strategies combined with overrating players have led to the Magpies facing a fourth consecutive year out of the finals.

“Collingwood has been a bit unlucky with injury and being on the wrong end of close results this year but the list isn’t as good as many believe it is,” Buckenara said. “There are players there that I believe must be overrated internally. The club might rank them as B to C-graders but in my opinion, they’re C to D-graders and players that are really there as negating or depth players at best.

“I’m thinking of guys like Levi Greenwood, Tim Broomhead, Tom Langdon, Jesse White, Jarryd Blair, Chris Mayne, Lachlan Keeffe, Jackson Ramsay, Rupert Wills and Adam Oxley. If these guys are in their future premiership model then I think it will be a long wait.

“Typically, signs that a club has overrated its list is when they tend to keep the same type of players and they then get the same type of results. “That’s exactly what I’ve seen at Collingwood. Something has gone wrong.

Collingwood moved on eight players last year — including premiership heroes Travis Cloke and Nathan Brown via free agency — while Dane Swan and four others retired.

As part of a special series for heraldsun.com.au where the list guru analysing the all 18 AFL clubs, Buckenara is scathing in his assessment of Collingwood.

While Buckley is under the most pressure, the blame for the Magpies’ woes can also land at the feet of a recruiting team that has invested in players with poor skills.

Collingwood is ranked 18th in the league for conceding marks to opposition players — averaging 7.1 per game — inside its own forward 50, which then means it takes more forward 50 entries to convert attacking play into goals (ranked 16th for goals per inside 50).

The Magpies also concede 57.4 points per game to rivals from turnovers — ranked 14th.

“That’s what hurts them and it’s because the club has recruited too many poor ball users that it kills any sort of game plan,” Buckenara said.

“It’s as simple as that.

“Collingwood also need to have a serious look at the list and breakdown exactly what they need from a structure point of view and the coach’s game plan.

“The club has a long history of keeping midfielders for too long and ignoring the need for key position players.”

**** that's harsh on Wills.

He was good when he played last season and hasn't had a chance this season.

Not arguing with the others.

Adams and Hopper virtually the exact same players. Hopper's ball use is a bit better and he probably has a bit more upside. We simply don't have the assets for Hopper who would be a luxury, not a need.

Agree. I don't hate Hooper but we have no need for him

Along with a new coach, we need a new list manager and head of fitness.

De Goey is untouchable along with Elliot,Moore and Pendles.

I would Trade De Goey for a Gun KPF.

I would Add Grundy to Elliot,Moore and Pendles but I agree the Rest is Tradable for the RIGHT Price

purely from list balance perspective i think we have a few too many midfielders.

I would see what we can get for Adams, Aish, Broomhead and Thomas. There are others but you cant do too much in one off season.

I would move Sier onto the Rookie list.

Would try and bring in Hopper and Fiorini if it didnt effect our ability to get the KPP'S we need.

Would give us a midfield of:

Jordan DeGoey
Adam Treloar
Scott Pendlebury
Callum Brown
Travis Varcoe
Steele Sidebottom
Will Hoskin-Elliott
Rupert Wills
Brayden Fiorini
Jacob Hopper
Jack Crisp
Levi Greenwood
Tom Phillips

And Brayden Sier on the Rookie List.

So you would pretty much Gut The Side and say we are are going to Re-Build from the Beginning.

I would also might like to get rid of:

  • Sidebottom
  • Varcoe
  • Wills
  • Greenwood
  • Crisp
as well then

Absolutely go for Hopper, but ensure we keep in mind our priority.

Pick 4, or whatever our first rounder becomes-Must result in a key position player of some sort, preferably key forward. Draft/trade doesn't matter.

Following players not trading:
-Scott Pendlebury
-Adam Treloar
-Jeremy Howe
-Darcy Moore
-Jamie Elliot
-Brodie Grundy
-Jordan De Goey
-Will Hoskin Elliot
-Taylor Adams
-Alex Fasolo

People seem to think Hopper's value is between pick 18-pick 25, which now that I think about it is reseemable. Has shown good signs but hasn't set the world on fire, has been injury prone, and is surplus to GWS's needs. If he does go for a pick this early it will be highly above average in terms of GWS's return on their leaving first rounders, which could be the case as idk GWS seems to hate us (Treloar, WHE deal we got robbed in both, as in we could've gotten them cheaper).

Brisbane's 1st rounder I believe is pick 37?

Could package
pick 37+2018 2nd rounder for Hopper OR
Pick 4+Pick 37 for Patton+Hopper OR
Steele Sidebottom+Pick 4 for Hopper, Whitfield+Pick 18
