Surprised that Jack Redpaths name hasnt been brought up.. Only 26 KPF and would be a cheap option both trade value and Salary.. If we could get Lever and him in this trade period it would be a massive bonus moving forward.

I floated un the cox tbread that I'd be trying to.turm cox into redpath. One of the few hit up forwards.

Doesn't really inspire me

Other problem with trying to trade with GC is their apparent preference for ready-made players rather than picks (their stated preference during the last trade period). Add to this, the difficulty of convincing players to move up there and trades seem tough to complete with them while players still have veto rights..

So, if Cameron is really keen on going to Qld, as rumoured, and we're already keen on Lever coming to us, who and what picks might be sorted around the bones of this:

GC gets Cameron plus ?
Crows get ?
Pies get Lynch and Lever

PS I understand that it's very hard to pull off these types of trades - just hypothetically.

You'd have to think GC will go back to wanting draft picks. They wanted players last year, surely will want draft picks because they pretty much have to start again.

I'm guessing they'd still prefer to avoid too much youth, so any (good) player wanting to go/go back to Qld would be great for them. There just don't seem to be many that are willing.

Gotta give something to get something. I'm on the "trade Steele" bandwagon if some big chips are on the table, but I know you're a big fan so I think you'll need to cop this one especially considering he was on the table last year and his early season indiscretion.
We need smart players in the midfield, the only player you could consider trading out of their is Adams. And that's not because he isn't good, but because we have enough grunt. We need more class and speed.

I think Motlop would be a good cheap get. And I would take Casboult and Lever if they aren't asking too much for a third up player...there is no guarantee he will make it as a KPP.

Without actually starting a new thread (which would be merged anyway).. would anyone like to discuss or submit a proposal for the treatment of Mayne in 2018 and beyond?

Some may be offended, but it needs to be dealt with, and could end up being a win/win for us & him if treated properly.

My take is that with Crocker, Fasolo, De Goey & Elliott all ahead of him... and Kirby hopefully so after a full pre-season, there is no need for him to be retained on the list. Accepting this, there is then the issue of the contract that needs to be dealt with.

So assuming that his contract has performance incentives in it, how about this...

Currently due to receive 3 x (€250k + $200k add-ons) from 2018 -20.
Agree that he's not likely to get any games going forward, so the $200k is out of the picture
So instead... agree to pay him out 3 x $150k = $450k, potentially over the three years in line with contract (allowable?)
which then allows him to go and make $100k+ per season somewhere else (WAFL, SANFL), off-setting the $100k he loses from us, and allowing him to play some good footy, potentially win a flag, and be away from the spotlight of melb press whilst ditching the tag of an overpaid recruit.

This then frees up $300k per year over the next 3 years, to go towards landing Lever and/or a free agent forward like Lynch at the end of 2018.

I know that a lot more cash is required & there are some technicalities in the above calcs, but the extra cash will come from the other delistings / trades and retirements at the end of this year and next, and I'm highlighting the max opportunity achievable through this.

Thoughts?

Daicos and Kirby are good kicks and will play a similar role once they make our seniors. Maynard's a deadly kick and should be moved into the midfield mix in 2018.

Maynard is a powerful kick, but too often the deadliness is to Collingwood.

I was scrolling down the article hoping not to see Blair's name. Phew!

Some sensible signings and lengths. I'm sure some posters will bleat about Cox, but when you have no other viable KPF or ruck on the list would be folly to let him go just yet.

Think Phillips still has upside.

I had a similar thought process reading the names. All seem justifiable, IMO.

Cox is probably the only one I can't quite convince myself of because I think his form only warrants a one year deal. I wouldn't be disappointed if another club swooped because I'd just go and get Nicholls or Spencer, but for the sake of our list a two year deal is about right.

Chris Mayne was in the file photo on Twitter. For a handful of terrible seconds, my heart stopped beating and crashed against my rib cage...:oops:

Is it worth trying to trade in Brisbane's second first rounder (Port pick- about 14/15).
If we were to trade in Lever and lose our first pick, absolutely. With 14/15 we'd have a red hot chance of securing Balta. Develop him down back, then throw McLarty forward to develop while Reid covers the position in the seniors for a year or two. Our KPP issues would be close to solved in the one trade/draft period.

Now I must admit I am more of a scanner than a reader of the trade thread as it is basically all speculation. Having said that I fully appreciate the passion and interest that many posters have for the topic.
But...even though I just scan, some of the trades that people are suggesting for Lever are making me

What do you think his value is?

For me, I think it costs us our pick 6 plus steak knives. There's no key defenders available at the moment, so lack of supply boosts his value. I think the Crows will be relatively keen as they can use the pick to get Gibbs.

Our first rounder and that is it.
The interesting thing for me is prior to the possibility of us picking him up arose I pretty much never heard his name.
But as soon as we showed interest he has overnight become the biggest mega gun superstar footballer the world has ever seen.
I know he has shown good signs in his brief career. So giving up a first is ok by me, but people are suggesting a first plus Shaz or a first and JDG etc. WTF.
Also let's not forget that we will have pick 5 or 6 and there is every chance we could pick up Brander with that pick. If we get Brander we get a potentially very good backman without giving up the overs that people are suggesting for Lever and we fork out what? 100k per year as opposed to what we would have to pay Lever to get him across.

The Crows won't use pick 6 for Gibbs. That's way over the odds given Gibbs' age.

I hope the Crows don't use pick 6 on Gibbs. He'll be 29 next year and given his age, and the age of free agency, he's not worth it. (IMO)
That said (IMO) you are on the money in regards to what it will take to secure Lever.

Casboult is another one I would have taken but not now another example of the horror mayne deal haunting us. I would off Casboult almost identical as what Mayne was given last year had that not been done
