This is just a hypothetical exercise to get hold of Logan McDonald but interested in all your thoughts.
Our next 5 games are against North, Carlton, Lions, Suns and Port.
I can’t see us beating Carlton, Lions, Suns or Port.
And I reckon North will beat us this weekend after their performance against the Lions and ours against Melbourne.
If we lose all 5 games, where are we likely to finish on the ladder?
At a guess I think we finish about 13th/14th depending on other results.
If we end up with a pick in the top 6, are we getting closer to being able to trade our first pick this year and next for pick 2 or 3 this year (with whoever that may be)?
If we can secure even pick 3, it probably ensures we can grab Logan McDonald and secure our coveted KPF we all crave.

Only issue is I can’t see us finishing the season on 0-6 losing run.

We do have doctors on this forum. We've got surgeons. Lawyers. People involved in the game at various levels with industry contacts. We've got all sorts of people on this forum. You're being dismissive of some of these people when you should stop and listen.

Never said we didn’t and no I’m not being dismissive. People are commenting and making statements on the McCartin situation as if they’re his doctor and they’ve seen scans of his brain when they haven’t. I’ll listen to educated comments but not from people who are just stating that Pat is cooked because he’s had some head trauma in the past. Yes it’s concerning but I firmly believe he isn’t finished yet as a footballer. He’s stated rightly so. All I’m saying.

I think we should play the kids too. Primarily to blood them and assess what we have moving forward. I’d be rolling 5 or 6 through the team each game from here on.

On current form I can def see 1/4 lol. We have a bye remember

but McDonald gonna be near impossible to get id say.
That depends what selection McDonald will go. I’ve heard he was slated at 15-20 initially but is now probably 5-10. With where we are likely to finish, what can we do to secure a top 3 draft pick?
Hopefully the club looks how we can do this. It will take some creativity and wheeling and dealing.

I hope we don't crash that bad. If we do even if we don't trade up with a pick 6 or 7 there should be a good key forward available. Logan McDonald (196cm), Riley Thilthorpe (199cm), Kaine Baldwin (194cm), Jackson Callow (194cm) all look good. You'd expect someone to be there at a pick 6 or 7.

Is Thilthorpe a ruck or KPF? I’ve read hes more a ruck? Callow and Baldwin aren’t quite KPF size? really want one with size.

I think the majority of us want the club to take a hard look at our list this year and delist or trade the dead wood and analyse our key needs.
Number one is a KPF.
If we rotate our younger players through the team each game, we learn more about our list and we almost certainly will end up somewhere around pick 6. If we somehow scraped in to play finals, we will only be making up the numbers this year.
You mentioned some names who are coming up a lot in draft discussions. It’s possible McDonald would not be selected until pick 6. But I’d love us to move up a couple of spots if possible because I’d love to bring McDonald to Collingwood.

Denver Grainger-barras is another to look at. He’s listed as a KPB. Can we develop him as a forward or have him replace Moore and send DM forward as our 203cm KPF.
So yep, there will be options.

I think your assessment of Phillips is generous, an outside mid with poor disposal and decision making? Why anyone would pay more than a third round pick is beyond me. If it's changed to 16 a field as well he will have quite literally, no use

I agree in general with your view on Phillips, but wouldn't 16 a side increase the value of endurance and outside players, even with disposal issues.

good point.

Has been playing ruck in the SANFL because their number 1 ruck is injured. Definitely has forward craft though.

Callow probably isn’t a traditional KPF and probably won’t be at AFL level. Baldwin has done 2 knees so there always a risk there. I think he can play KF if he gets the body right. Both would be around the late first to second round imo.

ah ok thanks. Would be nice to snag either McDonald or Thilthorpe then, though I doubt we aren’t the only ones keen.

They’re able to trade in later picks, or go in to deficit next year, which would push back their first pick a bit. There’s no way on earth they’ll sit on their hands and simply let their first be eaten up by a bid this year.
If he goes at 2, they need 2014 points with the discount. They don’t have a second rounder this year. Only their first, third and Adelaide’s third.

How do we help them while securing enough points for Reef this year and Daicos next year as well as trading in their 2020 first? Does giving them our 2021 first help their deficit?

I think Thilthorpe is someone that could possibly slide a little come draft night. Especially if he really is seen as a ruck first. Maybe we get lucky and he’s available at our pick. If not, there some value in other areas imo. Just have to get lucky and get a pick in before Reef.

There are a couple that could play at either end.

Nik Cox
Northern Knights/Vic Metro | Key Position Defender/Utility
15/01/2002 | 199cm | 82kg

A 199cm player who can run, kick on both sides, and play just about anywhere? It sounds too good to be true, but that is exactly what Cox brings to the table as his region’s most outstanding draft candidate. Cox cut his teeth as a tall wingman and key position swingman in 2019, juggling his time between school football, 10 NAB League outings, and a berth in the Under 18 Vic Metro squad as a bottom-ager. In 2020, the Northern Knights co-captain is set to develop as a centre-half back, with his athleticism and versatility in the role lending to the fact he has an enormous ceiling. He is also set to be a prime candidate to lead Vic Metro should the national carnival swing around, lauded for his professionalism and the example he sets via training standards.

Kaine Baldwin
Glenelg/South Australia | Key Position Forward
30/05/2002 | 193cm | 92kg

The news of Baldwin’s second ACL tear in as many years – albeit partial this time – was shattering. It means the promising 193cm forward will miss out on yet another season of football after earning All Australian honours at Under 16s level in 2018, and a crack at the SANFL Reserves grade as a bottom-ager. In our eyes, he remains a first round prospect on talent alone, and looked poised to really crack on in 2020 after his initial recovery. He was a handy preseason testing performer, with good returns in the vertical jumps and yo-yo test conveying Baldwin’s ability to crash packs and clunk big contested marks, while also harnessing that aerial dominance in his work up the ground.

Zach Reid
Gippsland Power/Vic Country | Key Position Defender/Utility
2/03/2002 | 202cm | 82kg

A versatile tall who could push for top 10 status, Reid returned a consistent output during his bottom-age season as a key member of Gippsland’s spine. He was tried up either end and through the ruck across 15 NAB League outings, but looked most comfortable down back and should find a home there once again in 2020. At 202cm, Reid is filling out nicely and can utilise that added strength to compete better one-on-one against big key forwards. He is a terrific judge of the ball in flight and positions intelligently, not just relying on his height to compete aerially. Reid is also both a sound handler and user of the ball for his size, providing a cool head in rebounding transitions.

Could we replace a Cox with another?

think we either need to find a way to grab one of the genuine KPF’s with forward craft and goal kicking ability, or draft another KPD and move Moore forward. Lot of talls in draft but how many are true forwards, it’s a diff craft, limited to a select few. A tall with good marking/agility can become a decent defender but no guarantees they can kick goals.

If Baldwin’s knees hold up he could be the best forward of the lot imo, he’s definitely got the talent. It’s a matter of who takes the risk on him. Do they get the bargain of the decade or another Scharenberg?

I think we need to be prepared to do a bit of projection with these guys too. Don't fall into the trap of pidgeon holing them. Naughton was drafted as a defender, but he attacked the ball like no one else and had great hands in his draft year. They're qualities that work forward too and thats whats happened at AFL level. If someone fits that description we should consider it. Maybe that's Nik Cox for example.

I don't think he'd be a popular selection on here. Could just as easily be Selwood as Shaz. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with it though. But kid has talent!
