I like Checkers as a third tall as well, Gunston is just a better player in that role.

We don’t need to find another AA level tall defender. We just need to have solid players with solid structure down there. Richmond won a premiership after Rance did his acl. They didn’t replace him with an AA key defender.
That’s a good point. But I guess in the scenario I was thinking, Gunston and Mihocek are the 2nd and 3rd tall with Cox taking the big defender, giving both room to do what they do best while De Goey roams free. I would like to keep Mihocek and get Gunston.

Id be going hard at Gunston. I think part of our dysfunctional forward line is due to a lack of a forward leader down there with real tactical/organisational nous.

Not only would we get a 50 goal forward, we’d get someone who could marshall the troops on field. An intangible that’s often overlooked but hugely important.
As a continuation of this thought, and cause I enjoy talking to myself, a leaderless forward line might be a bigger part of our problems than we realise.

How often do you look up the ground when we are chipping around on the half-back line to see a completely stagnant field? Happens all the time, perhaps the main reason our ball movement has gone to shit, is cause our forward 6 have no system, and therefore are providing no options for us to go quick to.

A new forward coach would be great, but just as important is that on field forward 6 leader to get everyone on the same page and operating as a system.

We've got a few real leaders down back in Moore and Howe, a couple in the midfield, but none of our current forwards scream leader or tactical genius to me.

Go hard at Gunston. I reckon he'll improve us out of sight, and in more ways than you might think.

Who’s initials are BB that would be on the trade board....
Aren’t you a teacher? Surely you can put 2 and 2 together...
Right OK, that frizzy haired guy. Is he any good?

Tend to agree. Triple premiership forwards capable of kicking 2-3 goals a game that are only 28 don't grow on trees

Shaun Higgins could be our 2021 Luke Ball. I'd absolutely have him over Phillips.

Also keen on Gunston, less so on Brown. He creates opportunities out of nothing, Brown tends to go missing and then hovers around the wing as a link-up.
Higgins seems destined to head down to the Geelong geriatric ward first XVIII

Couldn’t agree more. Won’t command huge dollars or trade by reports. Improves us massively.

The trade capital that the Hawks would require for him worries me.

Id be quite happy to cough up the trade capital if we were still contenders. If this was 2018 and we had narrowly lost the GF, or if it was 2019 and we just lost the PF, Id be quite ecstatic about getting Gunston. Even if he is more 3rd tall than genuine KPF, he is a gun!

Now maybe the lads will surprise me against WCE, but I doubt it...Problem is, I dont think we are contenders anymore. This year, we are likely to finish 8th, we aren't that close. We have been mediocre for around 2 months now. Id rather judiciously trade out some players, invest in some talent in the draft and be prepared to take a step backwards now, to take two steps forward in a year of two - a mini rebuild. IF we can somehow get Gunston without coughing up our first round draft pick, sure, but I too think that that is pretty unlikely. I think we need a medium tern re-set, not a short term quick fix

I envision a Gunston trade looking like the below...

Hawthorn Get: 2020 First + Sier
Collingwood Get: Gunston

This would mean a serious change to our forward structure in 2021, with changes required to the ball movement to get these players one-on-one opportunties.

Kelly can pinch hit in the ruck in a similar capacity to what Oscar Allen does for the Eagles.

HF: J.Elliott, B.Mihochek, W.Hoskin-Elliott
F: J.DeGoey, J.Gunston, J.Stephenson
I: W.Kelly

Damn the hype around Nick Daicos is continuing to build.

On Dwaynes arvo show Shifter reckons he only needed to see 15 mins of a Carey game to see how special he will be.

Gunston is a star with DeGoey, Miocheck, Stephenson that's a great mobile forward line, all very smart footballers.

I can't see Hawthorn giving him up cheaply and they shouldn't because he is a star and stars don't come cheap.

Gunston over Brown every day of the week.

I would absolutely love us to grab Gunston. He doesn't completely solve our KPF problem, but he makes us a better side.

We would still need to find a way to upgrade on Cox. Some options we would have:

- Keep Mihocek and develop Kelly or draft a young KPF. Dont mind it, but it leaves us quite skinny and undersized. Probably doesn't win us a flag.
- Find a way to trade at least 2 of Cox, Phillips and Mihocek and go after Brown or Hogan. Risks with both, but if it works it is our best chance for a flag.
- Keep Cox and/or Mihocek and go after a slight Cox upgrade like Wright. Probably doesn't win us a flag, but gets us close.

...or we could scrap all of the above and just focus all our energy on JEZZAAAAAA

Except we drafted Brown at pick 73, he had no trade value to North.

North drafted Rocca at pick 30. and got a bargain. If we hadn’t publicly delisted Rocca late in the H&A season like we did, we could have got that pick (or better). I still remember the interview in the HS late that year with Sav saying he had been told he would not be selected again in the seniors. I just remember wondering “what are they thinking?”

It was unfathomable list management, especially considering Sav’s form in 2000 wasn’t even that bad. Kicked a bag of 6 and another of 5 early on that year.

Can you imagine any club letting a 26 year old with over 500 career goals to his name go for nothing? You’d have to give two first rounders these days at a minimum to even start the conversation.

It’s 20 years ago and I still shake my head at the irresponsible and negligent approach to list management we showed.

It was ludicrus, MM thought he was soft. I remember an article Sav put out saying how that criticism by fans through letters and yelling over the fence and people inside the club effected him deeply.
