I'm certainly open to moving Moore forward as long as we can find a pair of key position defenders to cover him and Roughy. The concern is how well that backline functions with Moore in it and that we'd be significantly altering our biggest strength.

our overall defensive ranking might drop a few spots from number 1, but would potentially be counter balanced by a surge in our offensive ranking.

Buckley said on Saturday night that we consider our backline settled. So if we're considering Jetta to play a different position I think Phillips is well within his rights to question why the club considers him expendable but is also considering trading in a bloke that's 10 years older than him for multiple years.
b/c Phillips is slow, lacks composure, and the game has gone past him

Wouldn't complain if McDonald came to us as a fullback to replace Roughead, Dees destroyed him as a forward, new club back to defence could be a steal only just turned 28.

Jetta into defence which releases Crisp into the midfield.

Gunston as a trade

That would be 3 nice inclusions.

Not a fan of Crisp as a mid. Maynard the better option and more natural mid of the 2.

If they want to put Quaynor on a wing it's the right call. Phillips is a spud.

Yes, you’re right. I’m actually surprising there is interest in him. I thought delisting was more likely or retention as cheap “break glass in case of emergency” talls coverage. Kelly looks the real deal but I doubt any of Lynch Keane or Cameron will ever become regular players in our senior team. Can we afford to carry all of these “project” talls (and Cox) in a reduced squad?

You shouldnt be bombing it in to those players either or moving it slowly.

Good luck with Gunston if Buckley doesnt change how we move the ball and set up in the midfield.
Correct Weight

Yeah, but Wells was elite and had just come off a very good season. Jetta is so-so and has been injured frequently this year. I don’t see it happening.

I’m left wondering whether this is all for a proper trial of Maynard in the middle.

Jetta has been an excellent lockdown defender and generally speaking that’s been Maynards role. To take the most dangerous small to mid sized forward and nullify their influence.

Personally unless it’s a free hit through free agency (costing only $) or they cost very little trade wise, I’d like us to only trade for guys 25 and under.

I’m not convinced we are good enough to win one in the next 2-3 years. And given that I’d like those guys to be around when wave hopefully led by (both) Daicos, Reef, Kelly, Quoynor etc establish themselves.

Bet they root around with the gunston deal until 10 minutes left and will give in and get fully fleeced. Also leaving no time for much else
Hawks don’t deal like that, they like to get in quick get what they want, then sit back and see what else is happening.

In reading the piece by Rendell today suggesting:
That Collingwood trade Grundy to Sydney for pick 4.
Gain Jeremy Cameron.
Moving Darcy Moore to the ruck.
And add Robbie Tarrant.
Trade Cox to Dogs.

I like a lot of that and agree from the positional moves and believe it would improve the best 22. The part I don't like is the trading of Grundy, who coming into this year I viewed as the competition's best player is a hard pill to swallow, specifically for that low of a gain. I actually see a few components to what Rendell is thinking as suboptimal. I'd want at least pick 4 = Will Phillips and Aliir Aliir, if the objective is a salary dump. If Sydney were to throw in Will Gould, that would be a nice sweetner.

Tarrant I'd do, Moore to the ruck I like and see as optimised positional usage.

Grundy I am only now open to moving with how cooked he looked really since the return from the COVID lockdown. I would want some more insight into whether Grundy was actually carrying something that suggests he won't be able to return to his 2019 play, before making the trade however.

I just think it's a trade to the wrong Sydney club, a trade for the wrong key forward, and a move that doesn't give as much salary cap flexibility as perhaps could be achieved.

-- *as there have been big comments made about some big players, I thought I'd go through some situations that would intrigue me and help the list balance and solve the club's most pressing issues.

If I'm trading for Collingwood I'm trading Treloar to Gold Coast for pick 5. Pick 5 = Will Phillips. Grundy doesn't need to move to get Phillips who is the best midfielder in the draft.

If Jordan De Goey wants out/asks for too much money, I'd be talking to Essendon about Devon Smith, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and pick 41. With a view towards the trade addressing Collingwood's forward pressure and pressure around the ground issues, both of which have been horrendous this year.

If it was determined that Grundy is cooked, instead of making space for Cameron, I'd keep some salary cap space available and instead trade for Tom Green, Jake Riccardi and a 2021 pick to add further future flexibility. Green is more valuable than pick 4 and can be the most dominant first possession winner in the competition and Riccardi I'd argue is an even better fit than Cameron for Collingwood's front half, not only being younger, but his attack on the ball aerially is super impressive and if you're going to have ground level players around him, he can bring the ball to ground in a big way.

If these trades were to go down, I'd then go out and get a couple of key defenders. Robbie Tarrant for cheap would be ideal. Aliir Aliir for a suitable price would be good and a nice complement.

There are a lot more trades that would need to be explored, and a lot of underutilised players I'd go after once any big deals are made to know what needs still need meeting, but those big deals are probably those most interesting, and really when you're talking about this kind of currency, they're the kinds of trades that can propel a team fastest either up or down.

I wonder if Noble gets dropped with Howe back in. Two talls, two mediums, three smalls. We currently run two talls, one medium, four smalls. Geelong expoited his lack of size on the wing too. Blicavs was his direct match up and did as he pleased.
Very true

Watched about 90 seconds of that and nearly every time Moore was able to get a pretty free run and jump at the ball. I may be wrong but as a forward he was a lot less effective when his run is blocked/body pressure applied. Its the reason I agree that back his his best position. He is able to run and attack the ball with a bit more freedom and is why he has excelled down back. Not to say he can't be a very good forward, but I think he'll always be a better defender. I too agree that his short stints in the ruck were impressive.

Yeah maybe.

But maybe he has learnt to read the play better. Whilst at the same time building his body stronger.

It worked for guys like Pavlich (who also incidentally won AA selection at Full Back after being switched back early in his career).

Again, I’m not suggesting he isn’t a better back man. But I’m starting to wonder if we need him forward more if we fail, yet again, to land another decent key forward.

Why does mark Stevens keep banging on about treloar leaving

he is either

a) a complete moron

b) the pies want him to go.

I think it’s a dangerous line to tread if it the latter, you have de Goey trying to ream us for coin and treloar loves the club loves playing for the club and is a great citizen.

Unsure what to make of it all.
Because he has become irrelevant over the last couple of years and he's hoping just hoping that it may happen.

Reid MkII ?

Have very good info aparently going to keep micheck gunston is a far greater then 90 percent chance to be in black and white next year and keeping cox
Going with 1 big tall in the forward line and 2 very mobile medium talls surrounded by smalls that can crumb and also lead.

Also.aparently looking to bolster our midfield and our first rounder next year will be traded out

If we got Gunston and kept Cox and Mihocek you'd think De Goey would be destined for the midfield. It makes for a pretty sexy forward line and a reinforced midfield. We'd just need to find a way not to overpay on a 29yo

Anyone take Isaac Smith over Jetta?

Only every day of the week.

This story around Neville Jetta - yes the once decent small defender who by all appearances looks like he has fallen off the proverbial cliff over the past couple of years - is eye-wateringly painful and comical in equal measure.

If we even consider bringing him in at all, even just for one year at age 31, then I will have lost any remaining faith I may still possess in our club on every level, from the list manager to the recruiting team to the coaching panel.

Aware the below feels impossible with cap space…. But this would be how I approach the trade period and list changes heading into 2021.

Trade 1 –

Collingwood Receive: Western Bulldogs 2020 First Round Selection (Pick 12)
Western Bulldogs Receive: Collingwood 2021 First Round Selection (TBC)

*Would be a clear win/win for both clubs, accessing talent in respective drafts where the current picks would be swallowed by points allocations for Daicos/Ugle-Hagan

Trade 2 –

Collingwood Receive: Carlton 2020 First Round Selection (Pick 7)

Carlton Receive: Western Bulldogs 2020 First Round Selection (Pick 12) & Collingwood Third Round Selection (Pick 37)

*A Carlton-Collingwood trade? Its benefits Carlton giving them more flexibility and ammo for their trade period with Saad etc. For Collingwood, it pushes us higher up the draft board, putting us in a position to sign the highly touted Will Phillips.

Trade 3 –

Collingwood Receive: Jack Gunston

Hawthorn Receive: Collingwood 2020 First Round Selection (Pick 14) & Tom Phillips

*The question on this one is whether Hawthorn would want Phillips as the steak knives, perhaps Sier is substituted in. Regardless, we need to include something like Phillips given salary cap constraints

Free Agency

Isaac Smith –2-year deal with Collingwood

Ben Ronke – 2-year deal with Collingwood

*Perhaps wishful thinking with Isaac Smith, he certainly fits a need on the outside and I would be really looking to pick him up on a cheaper deal if he wanted to contend for a few more premierships with Gunston.

*Ronke is someone who I think could come in and play for us straight away in that JT role, addressing that small forward issue.

Draft

As mentioned, with Pick 7 we draft Will Phillips, someone who can play for us in Round 1 and a real future midfield star. From there, a bid will come for Reef in the late first/early second - we match this with our late 2nd/remaining late pick points.

2021 – Round 1

B: B.Maynard, J.Roughead, I.Quaynor

HB: J.Howe, D.Moore, J.Crisp

C: S.Pendlebury, T.Adams, J.Daicos

HF: J.Elliott, B.Mihochek, W.Phillips

F: W.Kelly, J.Gunston, S.Sidebottom

R: B.Grundy, J.DeGoey, A.Treloar

I: T.Langdon, I.Smith, J.Stephenson, B.Sier

EMG: L.Greenwood, M.Cox, T.Brown, J.Noble

J.Madgen, B.Ronke, C.Mayne, J.Thomas, D.Cameron

Positional Changes:

  • DeGoey – permanent midfield. We need him to take that next step into a dynamic midfielder that spells forward. Make no mistake he is capable of playing that Dustin Martin role, he just needs time in the middle.

  • Sidebottom – Plays predominantly forward. Steele should move into a more forward focused role in 2021, where he can be a damaging small forward who can have short bursts on ball. Like how Port have used Robbie Gray over the past few years. Steele will kick 30+ playing 80% game time up forward.

  • Pendlebury – Perhaps a strange move, but I would like to see Pendlebury move to a defensive minded wing role. He will essentially take over the role Mayne plays where he gets in behind the midfield, playing as a transition player out the backline. Just imagine Pendlebury transitioning from the back 50 instead of Chris Mayne, that alone could fix our transition issues.
