Gumby was a KPF, they hardly ever play a lit of games early and is a completely different kettle of fish to both Laverde AND Setterfield.
Oh and one. Ridley has played ONE more game than Setterfield.
Petracca did his ACL in his first year - he seems to have gone alright.

And people need to get this through their heads - the prices clubs paid for players like O'Rourke, Sumner, Plowman, Marchbank, Hombsch etc are NO LONGER THE CASE.
GWS dont need to cull list numbers or salary cap to meet regularion like they did at that point. If you want a contracted player from GWS you will have to pay market price, the same you would pay taking them from any other club.

For the record, Setterfield is worth a top 15 pick if you ask most people that followed the 2016 draft closely even with his ACL.

In reality we will need to pick one to target out of Setterfield and Shiel and go all in.
The chances of getting both are slim. Especially seeing their probably wont be any players they would be interested in from us that i would be willing to give up.

umm if they dont need to cull, why is Shiel being discussed as tradeable?

heard of salary cap pressure? what did we get for Hardwick?

Practicality. Get a top 10 pick this year rather than maybe 20 next year.

Nah. Too logical.

Why does any player request a trade - for a thousand different possibilities.
Money, homesickness, salary cap, homesickness commercial ooportunities, on field succes...

Of course i have heard of Salary cap pressure, unlike you however i dont just assume that every Vic media report that states we are interested in a player from a moderately successful interstate club means that they have salary cap 'pressure'

Heppell's pre game media conference today, interesting answer when asked about Shiel:

Reporter: "You've been linked to Dylan Shiel, just how much of an asset would he be to your midfield?"

Heppell:
"Oh Dyl, obviously a fantastic player, but I think we'll look broader throughout the comp, we'd love to add fantastic players to the footy side. But look from another point, I'd love to see them -want- to come to us; I think we've become a bit of a destination club, guys wanting to be here as part of the Essendon Brand and the Culture we're creating."

Mostly it just sounds like an attempt at a cliche answer, but I do think the comment about wanting players to come to Essendon is an interesting response nonetheless.

We'll see in a few months what eventuates wont we.... As someone posted before did we envision getting Smith, Stringer and Saad this time last year?

In the meantime Chill Winston!!!

The only reason we are talking about these two players IS because of GWS’s salary cap issues. They are in contract, but deemed gettable because of a so called squeeze which the whole industry is talking about.

Last year when the dogs were stonewalling we went in and cut a deal with the gws first.

Wonder if we have a good relationship with them over there from things like that

We possibly have a good relationship with Giants but do we have a better relationship than SOS? I don't see Carlton giving up pick 1 though.

Somehow I think the Crows will be involved in these trade talks so they can get there man in the draft, just a gut feel.

+ Darcy Parish

Why the hell would we trade out Parish when we have just spent the last few years grafting him into a clearance specialist - exactly the type of player were trying to trade in.
He is a few years away from his best but he is on track.

Jusr for a second imagine;

Shiel + Setterfield for 2018 first, 2019 first, 2019 second + Darcy Parish

Andrew Gaff as a free agent
Wayyyyy overs.

Well Parish is surely worth more than Setterfield so you’re proposing Shiel is worth more than 2 1sts and a 2nd?

The way people on this very board carry on you would think he is a top 5 midfielder in the comp good. He is brilliant, (they) also contracted so paying overs would be required to pry them away from GWS.

Shiel is an upgrade on Parish imho. Good player and one that could fill a void but Shiel is a genuine gun.
