I think Houli would be a good pickup.

Provides a short term replacement for McKenna and should be able to bring in some good leadership. Also should obviously be willing to buy into the gameplan. Good for the culture. Thinking along the lines of Hodge at Brisbane. Assuming he’s cheapish, I’m all for it.

Think it may be more to do with keeping Saad. And also adding a bit of experience into the backline (outside of Hooker and Hurley)
And adds another lefty to a glut of righties

Club have been reading my posts, they’re only a month late.

Experienced, great kick, Saad’s mate, familiarity in the system and just a genuine quality fella.

Lock it the **** in, if Richmond are only offering him a one year deal I’d offer him 2.

If you get 30 games out of him and 2 years of teachable moments it’s a win. I believe that Ham will be a long term player for us but Houli or Ham on a wing for us for the next 18 months?

Like Ryder shunned us surely Houli has some battle scars that will be too tough to overcome and come back to Essendon. Our club environment is too toxic for him to contemplate coming back. If I were him I’d take a pay cut to remain a tiger.

he also has life after football on his mind. I don’t think it will be a great fit.

Ryder didn’t shun us - his wife did. And Houli left because of that dud Knights, so fail to see there would be many ‘battle scars’ there.

Seems like an awesome move to me. Won’t cost us anything as he can walk to us, provides leadership, knowledge of the game plan and excellent disposal.

If it's true that the club are going after houli im amazed. Why the fu** would they go after a 32 year old? It is ******* absolute dumb.

fu** this club man. Going in the wrong direction already
Anyone with (almost) two norm-smith medals is valuable to a football club and we definitely need a level head like Houli in times of crisis. Houli probably has more finals experience than everyone on our list combined.

I'd rather Ridley consult with a two (possibly 3) times premiership player with experience implementing the exact gameplan we're trying to implement then the others we have on our list. We're completely bereft of on-field leadership so recruiting him addresses a major hole on our list.

Our younger players could learn a lot from Houli. We may even offer him a coaching role.

I also highly doubt he is the only player we're targeting. Young players like O'Halloran, Ely Smith, Witherden and Constable will also be in our sights.

If I was Houli's family I'd be getting him checked for CTE issues if he'd actually want to leave Richmond to come to Essendon.
based on the natural cycles, this is probably it for Richmond after this year.
They'll stay thereabouts but the window is rarely open for more than 4-5 years.

Cash, future employment & long term deal surely becomes enticing for a guy about to approach his playing retirement.

keep telling yourself that. Essendon is also a successful footy club 🙄

We don't have a replacement for McKenna. Hooker may have fallen of the proverbial cliff.

The defence is looking extremely thin as it is (even if there is quite a bit of raw potential). If Saad leaves we're in serious trouble with so many holes it's not even clear where we start plugging.

A rebuild doesn't mean no experience. It's a process which is about developing a new core of a list as quickly as possible.. There is no point letting the bottom fall out completely as that doesn't help anyone.

Having said that I'd not want to be playing a Hooker, Hurley and Houli back six. That would be a road to nowhere that would be hard to justify given where the team is at.

If we keep Saad then no way. There's plenty of leadership in defence (including Saad) he'd simply be taking the spot of a younger who should be learning.

If we are losing Saad then maybe. I still think we have enough ex- Richmond coaches who should be getting the players to play how they want without this sort of move.

i'd be surprised to see Hooker and Hurley in the same backline again..
One will play to provide guidance and cover to Zerk and co.
