Not necessarily, he might be just about done with Richmond given they've got a number of guys now back there filling a similar role, and don't need his experience or leadership.

If he's got coaching aspirations it might suit him well to take 2 years with EFC in a playing / coaching role, Burgoyne is basically doing that for Hawthorn to avoid the soft cap, Hodge was a key part of Brisbane in a similar role.
You’re kidding yourself if you think he’d move clubs for peanuts. It’ll be to top up his retirement fund, hasn’t been on much in recent years.

What do you think he's going to be paid? He's on year-to-year deals with Richmond, probably not on a significant (by AFL standard) amount, and with the likelihood that even if he's offered a contract for 2021 by Richmond, it won't be there in 2022.

It's not like we'd be spending $750k a year on the bloke. In all likelihood, 2 x $300k + Match Payments would be a pretty good outcome for him, and may well be a good outcome for EFC.

Bringing in one older player on the cheap doesn’t throw a rebuild into chaos. If you refuse to play with any experienced players you end up like Melbourne in the Neeld era. You need a blend of youth and experience.

Experience means nothing without leadership. We need people to set the tone for putting their head over the ball, having another squib won’t get us anywhere. Sure he can use the ball, but that isn’t going to fix the playing culture.

Why would be he move for the same amount of money. If he decides to leave Richmond (I don’t think he will), it’ll have to be for decent coin, I’d say 450-500k over 2-3 years. No chance he would come if we are offering 300k 😂

2 x $300k is $600k. $300k is about AFL average wage.

If he's offered 12 months at Richmond, versus 2 at EFC on a similar wage, which is more appealing?

You’re assuming that. I highly doubt we’re offering mega bucks and multi year deals to Houli.
From what I've read the major reason he's interested in leaving Richmond is they won't offer him more than another one year contract , so it's logical we'd have to put him on the books for 2 years if not 3. And he's also not going to walk out of a club still likely to contend strongly next year unless the salary we offer is significant. The only way this makes any sense at all is IF it is a means to pursuade Saad to stay on, and even then I fear we may pay too high a price.

Classic dodo move. Desperate to hang onto Saad so he goes and offers Houli a contract. He thinks its a 400 IQ move but it's just bad. More top up, not enough rebuild.
Agree AD is delusional AF. In fairness though I reckon Truck & Blake would be heavily influencing this decision.

A rebuild doesn't mean no experience. It's a process which is about developing a new core of a list as quickly as possible.. There is no point letting the bottom fall out completely as that doesn't help anyone.
:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Having said that I'd not want to be playing a Hooker, Hurley and Houli back six. That would be a road to nowhere that would be hard to justify given where the team is at.
Least of all because Bruce and BT would never keep their names straight. They struggle enough as it is.

All this talk about getting Houli for “experience” and “leadership” is odd to me. The backline is the one place we have plenty of experience (I’m not going to try and quantify leadership). I’d think if we were looking for something like that, it would be for our forward line. It’s the most inexperienced area of the field for us and it shows. Our forward line is a shambles.

If you take Hurley / Hooker out then Saad is our most experienced defender, and we're waiting to hear what he's doing next year.

Getting the feelers out for Houli wouldn't actually be the worst thing the club has ever done.

I don't mind Houli especially if we lose Saad and he comes at a cheap price to pay. However if not then I don't want to see anymore players prone to soft tissue injuries on the list.

We don't need a full rebuild and in my opinion no club really does unless they've been up with flag contention for 5 years ie hawks.

The key is to keeping JoeyD if we lose him than no point bringing in 30yr Olds. I think losing Joe sets us back 2 years until Harry J is up and about or someone else is brought in like J.Cameron.

If we retain the list we have than the only missing piece is a big bodied mid. I think I did say at the end of last year one maybe wasn't essential but alot of that worked around a fully fit Heppell and Stringer and now I've seen how soft we actually are on the middle.

I'd absolutely get in Will Brodie. Or consider a Cooper Stephens, Constable and still ask about LDU although I think his price has gone to high now.

I continue to ask myself why can't Heppell be a big bodied mid? Wasn't that exactly what he was drafted for? Maybe his exclusion was in fact a big reason for our slump. He's 189cm the same height as JPK but 11kgs lighter. Surely at 27/28 he was meant to be that big bodied mid for the now. The issue is now foot issues and putting 5-7kgs on top of that.

I'd love to see a 90kg Heppell inside. Just gaining territory on his left from congestion or feeding out handballs to better users like McGrath and Zerrett.

A fully fit Stringer aligned with a fully fit Daniher and Laverde also crucial.

Good list id also have a good lock at Cox from Brisbane as a small defender. Will come very cheap if he's still wanted. From memory a victorian

I’d rather eggmolese or Paton but I’d take him as a DFA. The club needs to build the list depth. And when I mean depth I don’t mean 27 year old Townsend types.

I actually think our depth is quite good and that's probably a result of injuries. Maybe if we lose too many of McKenna, Saad, Hooker, Hurley, Daniher, Fantasia, TBC all at once then we might be battling like any side would.

Paton won't move and would cost a bit now. I like the thought with Egg and also Witherden (Although both battle to defend but can kick and use it well)

Doesn't understand why we need leadership and isn't going to try to quantify leadership.

I think by now it's pretty clear that Heppell can't put the weight on, nor has the durability to play that role. Credit to him, he tries though.

I'm just thankful Puopolo didn't play for the Tigers tbh

He's actually done very well to forge a fairly decent career, if he was to go in to coaching he wouldn't be a bad person to have around a club. He's absolutely cooked on-field though.

Is scarily our most experienced defender after Saad, Hurley and Hooker - I think it's quite possible Hooker plays mostly forward in 2021 if we accept we aren't challenging, with Zerk-Thatcher playing alongside Hurley. Ambrose an unknown.

Houli give me a spell. Dodoro needs to find the Exit Door ASAP.
Houli would have to be a Ruttacela call, surely?

My keys to success:

- 90kg Heppell
- 90% games from JoeD, Stringer and Laverde
- Retain Saad, Daniher and Fantasia
- Trade Will Brodie in
- strip weight off Langford
- Find a cheap small defender

I don't see a huge worry with our current list

C.Cox - BZT - Francis
Ridley - Ambrose - Saad (Redman)
Langford - 90kg Heppell - Z.Merrett (D.Shiel)
D.Smith - Daniher - Tippa
Fantasia - J.Stewart - Laverde (Parish)
Draper - Stringer - McGrath (W.Brodie)
