Bringing in one older player on the cheap doesn’t throw a rebuild into chaos. If you refuse to play with any experienced players you end up like Melbourne in the Neeld era. You need a blend of youth and experience.

Interesting that not one expression Of interest made for Martin Gleeson yet we played him most weeks he was available ..................

How would you know if there were expressions of interest made? They’re not all reported on afl.com

Brodie averaged 22 disposals (10 contested), 4 marks, 5.5 tackles, 4.8 clearances and about 220 metres gained in 2019. At 21 years old.

I think you're applying a bit of mayo here suggesting he's not AFL standard.

Clearly he's got flaws, and those flaws might mean he doesn't work in the system the coaches are trying to build. He's hardly a 28 year old finished product though.
Moreso Constable than Brodie, otherwise I agree.

He won’t be on the cheap though. We’ll be throwing decent money and multi years at home, that spells danger if he falls off the cliff.

Might also be a ploy to get around the soft cap. Bring in someone familiar with the game plan that can be an onfield coach.

this feels like a Rutten call if anything.
True. Why can't we innovate and be leaders (again), went down the Geelong path (failed), now we are going down the Rich path. It's almost like nobody has any idea what they are doing except to try and save face.

You’re assuming that. I highly doubt we’re offering mega bucks and multi year deals to Houli.

Anyone with (almost) two norm-smith medals is valuable to a football club and we definitely need a level head like Houli in times of crisis. Houli probably has more finals experience than everyone on our list combined.

I'd rather Ridley consult with a two (possibly 3) times premiership player with experience implementing the exact gameplan we're trying to implement then the others we have on our list. We're completely bereft of on-field leadership so recruiting him addresses a major hole on our list.

Our younger players could learn a lot from Houli. We may even offer him a coaching role.

I also highly doubt he is the only player we're targeting. Young players like O'Halloran, Ely Smith, Witherden and Constable will also be in our sights.
Learnings!

If Daniher is going to Brisbane I'd be asking for Witherden as part of our package. With McKenna and possibly Saad going it seems like he would be a really strong addition to the backline. Better option then playing Devon Smith or Fantasia (whos also likely gone) as a half back.

Houli is a free agent, if you bring a free agent in you don't get compensation if a free agent leaves right? Imagine if we gave up a pick 7 compensation pick for Houli. Or maybe this means Joe is staying!

or offer richmond a trade (Geelong 4th rounder perhaps) or get him as a DFA.
i think we'd avoid the Free Agency period on him....

We’d have to be offering a lot more than Richmond for him to consider leaving that club.

Not necessarily, he might be just about done with Richmond given they've got a number of guys now back there filling a similar role, and don't need his experience or leadership.

If he's got coaching aspirations it might suit him well to take 2 years with EFC in a playing / coaching role, Burgoyne is basically doing that for Hawthorn to avoid the soft cap, Hodge was a key part of Brisbane in a similar role.

don't hate the idea, if we're going to invest in youth it'll help have an experienced leader from a successful club out there to guide Ridley/BZT/Redman etc.
Besides, it's not like we're giving up two first round picks to bring in a midfielder with known kicking issues on a 6 year big money deal
