So my observations from this time last year:
We went after the key defender, got him, everyone got excited that we got him, and he had zero influence on our season.
Same goes for Broc. I know he was more insurance but again, zero impact.

I hope we are more fruitful this year and bring in at least B or C graders.

You missed the observation that Gunston was going to be a regular feature of our best 22 and kick 30-40 goals, be the next Willo and carry us to a flag. So close, so close...

I thought Broc was good in the few games he played. Boumann never got going though.

I've always been part of the "well show me a better option" crowd - but when you see Collingwood pick up Tarrant, Ball, Jolly and Lynch you're entitled to ask "why can't we do that?"

EDIT: yes I know we've got Gibbo, Hale, Gunston and Burgoyne - but Collingwood's ability to go out and get one of the very BEST of the player type they need is becoming quite amazing.

Ok we need a key defender and a pact mid. I am worried about the lake speculation. I think he is at the wrong stage of his career to join us. i would like to see us pursue Luke Thompson from Adelaide or Tayte Pears from essendon and pick up a speedy mid through the draft!

worried about wellingham potentially being traded to w.c or freo , where does this leave bud at the end of next year? out of contract maybe looking to return home to play along his best mate , thats one contract id like to see done before the start of next season
Yeh it worries me a bit as well, but it was reported that we are trying to extend the contract now.

You dont think Wellingham was staying with Bud simply because he was planning to go west and found that convenient for now ?

Lynch is a marginal upgrade on Dawes. At best.

I'd argue we've done better over the same time period recruitment wise.

I got no idea WTF is going on? Is this the trade period aswell or just so the free agents can find a home. When does trade week or fortnight or month start?
This week is purely free agency. From Monday the 8th for the next 3 weeks teams can make trades. Free agency lasts a total of three weeks (1st 3 weeks in Oct) so the 4th week of October is purely for trades.
Hope that helps.....

Taking the above into consideration there is no rush for us if we have a plan we simply sit back and watch others (Tigs?) spend like crazy and have no $ to move once the initial frenzy has settled. Am hoping the club has a pan and given their record in years past (Gibbo/ Burgs/ Hale then Gunston) I have faith in them.....

It's pretty comparable

Hale - Jolly (Jolly the better ruckman but on his last legs)
Gibson - Tarrant (Tarrant the better pure defender but Gibson the better player)
Gunston - Lynch (This one is pretty heavily in our favour)
Burgoyne - Ball (Burgoyne's knees have restricted him, as have Ball's. Collingwood probably getting better value)
Cheney - Buckley (I do not rate Buckley at all. But both depth players)

This is because for 4 years we have continually tried to fill our deficiencies with extremely weak soft gap options, last year was just another attempt.
Ruck - Skipper, Pattison and even Hale is not the genuine tap ruckman we crave
KPD - Boumann, again even Gibson and Stratton do not fill this need. Yes they are great defenders but don't fix our glaring weakness.

I feel like we just continually waste 2nd and 3rd round picks trying year after year to fix the same problems, surely it would be better the really go hard for a big fish even if it costs a 1st rounder.

It's an interesting argument - but the Jolly/Ball pick ups were phenomenal.
Lynch, in my view, is quite the upgrade on that Leigh Brown character that they miss so badly. Dawes will go back to plodding around the forward line with two aims: 1) mark it when we don't kick it to Travis and 2) tackle like a madman.

I think Hale has been underrated for us - but he's not a weapon that makes other teams fear us. People look at Collingwood and wonder what they'll have to do to combat Jolly. People look at the hawks and say well done for getting a forward/ruck for team structure, but he's not really causing headaches in either position.

Picking up Ball and getting him fit gave them the inside mifielder they'd been dying for. That's like us picking up Nathan Bock.

Gibson - another guy that has surprised many with how good he's been - but he's just a bit too short.
Burgoyne - does his job to a tee, but we can't play him through the midfield as often as we'd like

Then you've got similar returns from Gunston/Krakour, Cheney/Buckley, etc.

I think our recruiting has been great and we'd be struggling in a big way without these guys - but I think Collingwood's has been one level above ours.

The gap between the substantial production Gibson has delivered as a Hawk and the performance of Tarrant in his second coming as a Magpie is massive. You could steer an ocean liner through it.

Ball has missed 2012 but played in a flag in his first season. Burgoyne 2012 was his best as a Hawk.

Jolly > Hale but Hale has the game to progress in this new game. Jolly gets worse from here and quickly.

But this is the thing; as Lynch enters stage left, the crook is around Dawes' neck as he gets pushed out the other door. They won't keep both.

I'm underwhelmed by Lynch; he's one dimensional in a way Leigh Brown never was. Stick him the square and have him lead hard into space by all means. Just don't ask him to be a mobile ruckman capable of winning his own ball in the middle of the ground.

Have you missed the bit where we used our first round pick to land Gunston? And Burgoyne a couple of seasons before that?

This fixation with a "gorilla backman" is crap. Defense starts from half forward.

I agree with this. Also, if he is coming in to the do the ruck role how much exposure has Lynch had to this with Nic Nat and Cox taking almost all the ruck duties for the last few years? It is an odd selection for mine. Lynch and Dawes in the same team is not something too daunting as far as I can tell either.

But you need to name the blokes who qualify for the role and then name how many of them were traded from another club. Richards and McFarlin are the only ones I can think of and Richards was released at the time as he was not rated highly enough and McFarlin we already had once, would be nice to get him back (and keep Hodge). There are only about 10 backman who fit the bill and no one is going to trade one of them to the Hawks.
