Well, least it will also screw a lot of other clubs harder than us if they bring it in this year.

Though I think it would only be fair to bring the changes in for the 2025 draft as clubs have made trading decisions based on the current system for this draft.

I personally think the changes should be simple.
  • remove the 20% discount. The fact a club has bidding rights is an advantage enough.
  • if the bid comes in the first round then a pick within the next ten picks must be involved for the points.
The AFL will want to set up the Northern clubs before Tasmania comes in so there will be no change to their Academy picks until 2028

That other clubs Academy players can be matched by all clubs from start of second round from this draft would get near unanimous support from all the southern clubs (except us who have chosen not to develop this pipeline effectively but rather put our resources into developing our VFL, Institute and Houli Foundation to create an effective pipeline for Essendon lol) to be brought in this year

A reduction in the points associated with picks over 40 seems inevitable ...though may result in clubs being faced with the need to use points from the next draft or not match more often ...

2 - Fin O'Sullivan
9 - Sam Lalor
11 - Matt Whitlock
12 - Jobe Shannahan
13 - Tobie Travaglia
15 - Taj Hotton
20 - Harvey Langford
23 - Isaac Kako
29 - Bo Allan

One of the best performances of the Talent League round by Travaglia who's in a strong vein of form right now. Playing mid/fwd instead of his traditional defensive role, his competitive intensity around the contest helped him win plenty of the ball for his team. He did everything possible to get Bendigo over the line, kicking three goals in quick succession deep in the fourth quarter to put them ahead on the scoreboard, but unfortunately a spate of ill discipline saw them conceded the lead and the game.

Really like this kid. After Smillie and O'Sullivan, Travaglia along with Hotton are my next most liked players in the draft

Yep and the angry clubs will be told last so they will say we've already told the other 12 clubs this is what's happening.

AFL are campaigners
It's time....

I think the El Nour ship has sailed for us unfortunately, especially if we take Lockwood. How many tall(ish) defenders do we need?

As a midfielder, Kako is becoming a serious weapon for the Cannons either as a first hands stoppage winner, or more commonly as a dangerous first receiver who bursts clear and delivers a creative and attacking ball by hand or foot. His accuracy on shots at goal continues to be an issue, but his field kicking is a weapon so perhaps his conversion issues are a case of the yips or a technical flaw that can be addressed.

Would be great if he was available at one of our 2nd rounders

Taking in the general sentiment across the team draft boards, I reckon there are going to be a lot of teams chasing talls, which will probably move a number of the talls I have sitting just outside the top 20 into the first round, which would mean few guys like Kako will slide.

From what i have been reading the general consensus is that the top 4-5 are reasonably close and any one of them could be #1-#4 and then there are another 25-30 players that really could go anywhere in the top 30 and a strong draft pool of around 40 kids.

Looks like a good year to have 5 picks inside 30

Grimes gone next year, Young's a dud, uncertainty over Gibcus, Will Yze persist with Balta forward?.... and you still need depth to cover for injuries/form slumps on top of all that...so I'd say we still need a few....

Broad, Young, Balta, Gibcus, Miller, Blight, Lockwood potentially, even Kosi could play back. I think we have enough.
Thanks for reminding me of another two reasons Broad (will be 32 & is already half cooked) and Kosi (even bigger dud than Young, failed as a defender at Hawthorn)
