Summary of the day so far, most of it rumour:

- Davey and Houil still wanted by Hird; still strong rumours a trade to Melbourne and Richmond respectively
- Winderlich rumoured to the Saints; Jason is contracted until next year so very unlikely. Davey has also been linked to the Saints

We haven't really been mentioned as a destination much yet. Justin Sherman is seemingly going to the Dogs and Hawthorn and the Dees are fighting it out for Hale.

Trade Week finishes on Monday this time around. So don't expect anything but rumour until the weekend.

Hot from Twitter:
Looks like we may not be involved in Trade Week.
Houli has been named as a required player.
Hird said he is keen to spend the next year looking at what is currently on the list.

I think thats a good way to go about it, i would only want to trade Houli and we wouldnt get much for him so might as well put some gametime into him next year and see if he can turn it all around and become a valuable midfielder for us. I think its pretty clear Hirdy is going to give some guys some decent game time and see if he can find a 'best 30' similar to collingwood. I think next years trade period will be a bit busier for us when you look at the amount of 'meh' players coming out of contract. Plus you also add any players that cant grab a spot under Hirdys reign could be in a bit of trouble.
Lets go to the draft and bring in 3 good kids and add a few more rookies.

YAWN.

Have heard that we may make a play toward the end of the week, but that is just speculation that you get in trade week.

Cant see who we will go after. If we had a second first rounder to play with, would be nice to offload for Mitch Clark, but he is contracted and wont leave.

There are no midfielders around that we want or need.

Wouldn't be overly disappointed if we were inactive during trade week provided we sign all of the guys we're trying to retain.

Mightn't be our prerogative to decide to just hold on to our current list if Houli/Davey are actually keen to leave. If we just sit on our hands and say "they're required players" we could lose them for nothing.

with the gold coast holding the majority of good draft picks there aint much point trading to other clubs. swapping guys like houli for a 2nd round pick would mean a pick possibly 40+. Much better off holding onto pick 8 and the majority of the list for mine. If other clubs such as the eagles or saints consider trading shuey or armitage for a 2nd/3rd round pick i'd take it. the draft is thin.

Does anyone still remember what number draft pick that Jimmy was picked?

...........and what number Josh Fraser was picked by Collingwood?

hird's draft was 20 years ago - can you come up with something more recent and then subtract 20 given this draft is compromised?

I don't understand how this answers my post, nor the relevance.

Let me try, Jimmy was drafted at pick 79, subtract 20, and that makes 59. Maybe we can still find something in a compromised draft after all, because draft 1 may be as usefull as Josh Fraser.

your josh fraser example isn't the best really given he played 200 games. perhaps aaron fiora would have been a better example but i take your point.

i asked for something more recent - the james hird example was 20 years ago. the level of recruiting and draft combine testing has improved a lot since then so these type of bargain picks like hird, chris grant and dean kemp of yesteryear are extremely uncommon today.

the best recent example is probably dane swan - pick 58 from memory. Given the gold coast has pre-listed players this effectively takes the draft back about 20 picks from the normal year-to-year draft. so the dane swan example would mean that he would have been roughly pick 38 in a compromised draft. given the first round ends at pick 25 this year, pick 38 is a 2nd round pick this year.

for this reason if you had any more than 3-4 picks in the ND this year you're likely to be picking up rubbish.

there's no point making change for the sake of it - each time you draft a player you generally have to wait at least 2-3 years before they reach potential. with a shallow draft pool the less picks the better for mine.

sydney have remained extremely competitive by ignoring the draft and pouncing on players other clubs have developed for a couple of years. I think the sydney approach is the wisest way to go in compromised drafts.

it appears James Hird is going down this path stating he hopes to retain most of list and only have 3-4 picks. I'm happy with this.

we should seriously look at mc kinley. trade the queen mary jay neagle and a late pick. also hird should wield the axe like jade the blade rawlings did. its the only way forward.

essendon don't need mcinley. neagle has a year to run, they have gumbleton, carlisle and still as well. and the next big father-son star daniher to come (darcy's younger brother) as a key forward.

essendon has plenty to work with. mcinley is only a 3rd forward anyway IMO

A fit Williams > McKinley.

McKinley is an interesting option. He is medium sized but plays like a KPP.

I always thought he would turn it around and become a good player for WCE.

Especially after kicking 7 against us a few years ago IIRC

In my opinion we need to get RID of Stanton(Massive trade bait), Jetta and Davey
Players we should KEEP and play as midfielders along side Watson are
Myers #6 pick=Bound to be good
and
Houli everyone loves!

If either Tambling or Hale come to the club im moving

I dont think we need to be overly active in trade week.

Read off twitter that Hird is likely to make minimal changes to the list this year so he has a season to properly assess it. A few might dodge bullets and get second chances.
I don't expect anything to happen this week for us. If any trades are to be made, make it for draft picks only. No point getting rifd of mediocre players for other mediocre players, it's not going to improve us any.
David Hale is the only one I might be interested in. All the premiership sides have won with ruckman bought in from other sides, and this might be the new lease of life Hale needs to turn it around. What is his age by the way?
