Great recruiting! Now we need to trade for a star. 11 out of the first 14 picks

11 of the first 14 picks. Something tells me GWS will pull a big name by the end of the trade period. Can afford to lose 2 or 3 of those first rounders, heck, they could probably afford to lose 5 and get 3 absolute guns, but it's not very realistic.

maybe jason Gram with the saints salary cap pressure.

Excellent recruiting so far but I am dissapointed we lost Saad. So what star players could GWS potentially attract with these first rounders?

Can they trade this years draft picks for a teams following years draft picks? Something like, say, Swans 1st round pick next year for this years 13 and 14 1st round pick?

Starting to get picks in the drafts over the next couple of years is a very good idea - such as the compo picks.

Hopefully some bigger name players soon. Surely we only need no more than the top 3 picks?

No. Compensation Picks can be traded though (Which can be used over in further years)

lol. We need quite a few talented young players. But wouldn't be suprised if we offered 2 of our picks between 3 and 14 for a star.

Good to know.

Considering with the current NEAFL players we already essentially have about 5 picks in the 1st round of the draft already in the team, I can't see another whole bunch of young players being that important if we can trade for some big names. (Once we draft Patton, Coniglio and Longer - I guess). So if the opportunity to offload some picks for a big name comes, they should take it.

If GWS want to be successful in Sydney they need to sign a Lockett or a Hall type, someone to captivate the crowd and media. I don't think Folau will be enough.

Folau won't be a great full forward. But he can kick 35+ goals in a season. He will be a solid one, besides in a few years once Patton develops he'll be it.

What was the thinking behind the saad St Kilda trade.. seems odd to get rid of two talented players only to upgrade pick 25 into pick 20..

Yeah I kinda agree, it's not like Saad was too old, and having a small forward can always be useful. Oh well, I won't judge too harshly until the draft is done and dusted.

Seems that no star is coming this year.

SS just said on TWR that they will be using all of their current picks in the draft. Outside of Cornes, Broen and Power there will be no more trading.

Seems strange, dunno who is going to get the gig as skipper in the inaugural year..??

Callan Ward..?

Luke Power..?

My money would be on Power. Ward doesn't scream leadership to me. Power does. But if he's only around for a year, then maybe it's not the best choice?

Surely the rumours about Scully aren't true! :p

I think that maybe because MacDonald has experience being captain and will continue on in a coaching role, he might provide at least some more continuity than the other experienced guys coming to the side.

Also worth remembering that gold coast picked up 11 players draftwise (including Nathan Ablett from the preseason draft) so if we did the same it means our latest pick in the draft would be pick 14.

But as far as power, brogan and cornes go we will use pick 49 and 85 to get them. Which means as far as power go we will use our final pick in the draft for him which is pick 85 - so brisbane can either take that pick now or we will use that pick to get him with that pick in the draft. And clearly we are trying to use pick 49 to get brogan and cornes.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but took the top 14 picks (given you have 11) in four consecutive drafts that have had time to mature and peak age wise and these are the lists.

Just an idea that top 14 throws up some stars and some duds but besides the 2005 draft (Murphy @ 1) it is not an overly strong group from which to build a super team.

Hope for your sake it turns out to be a good draft.

Of course there will always be high draft picks that disapoint, just as there are many who meet there expectations but you also have to remember that a number of those picks were needs based picks and in that sense not a true top 14 selection. GWS on the other hand as was stated by Silvagni will focus fully on picking the best available talent.

i would be using a couple of those 11 draft picks ot get goddard, as besides Izzy you aint got much to promote the club out there...a couple of yngsters, but no confirmed superstars yet...
good luck to you boys be good to have AFL in syd every week...even if it is to play 2nd fiddle to the swans..(sorry had to put that in there..lol)

I find it bizarre that you guys haven't chased at least a couple of mid-aged mature bodies. I would have thought Paul Bevan would be a perfect, cheap buy for GWS, especially given he's a Swan from Western Sydney. Jarred Moore similarly (though not from WS). Surely a package deal of Bevan and Moore for a 3rd rounder or so would have been win-win-win?

So the breakdown is that we brought in:

Sam Reid
Luke Power
Dean Brogan
Chad Cornes

We also held on to 2 of our prelisted players in:

Adam Kennedy and Tim Mohr

And while of course we have picks 1,2,3,4,5,7,9,10,11,13,14.

We also picked up mid first-round compensation pick from the suns, round one compensation pick from the crows, and compensation draft pick end of first round from the dockers.

In addition to that we have picks 56 and 85 which we will most likely use to bring in a couple of experience players

Perhaps that may include the likes of Kris Pendlbury or Rick Ladson.

And on that basis our side could look like this:

B: Davis, Hombsch, Mohr
HB: Cornes, Ladson, K. Pendlbury
C: Palmer, Ward, Macdonald
HF: Power, Coniglio, S.Reid
F: Patton, Bruce, Folau
R: Brogan, Scully, Shiel
IC: Trelor, Bugg, Cameron, Kennedy
