Weird player. Buckets of talent with random gaps.

Who'd I choose to do a spot up pass inside 50? Paul Curtis. Who'd I choose to be a 1 on 1 target inside 50? Paul Curtis. Who'd I choose to take a set shot? Anyone but Paul Curtis. Who'd I bet on to lead at the ball carrier? Anyone but Paul Curtis.

If he plugs some of those weaknesses, crikey
And you didn't mention his biggest weakness, his other leg.

He led up at the ball carrier and marked some rockets in the last game.

Commentators remarked on how good his hands are.

Clearly something he'd been working on, hopefully we see more of it this year.
Everyone was brilliant in the last game. Lazzaro looked like a premier midfielder. I'm not sure how much of that all-round brilliance was down to something finally clicking compared to Gold Coast going on holiday halfway through the second quarter, but I would also obviously love to see him developing that part of his game this year

There are no sharks at La Trobe. The Darebin Creek runs alongside but that is of course upstream of Dights Falls.

45. Hamish F

At 110kgs he is a lumbering, hard working type of ruckman. Will benefit from a full preseason. Given CCJ’s lingering injury concerns Free is one Xerri injury away from a debut. At worst he will play the season in the VFL and give Goad time to develop his body without having to undertake rucking duties against bigger bodies.

Thst his leading patterns and role clearly changed doesn't have anything to do with their form though.

He does a bit of the shoving into the contest, but I've seen him genuinely grapple with opponents too. There's a mixture there at the moment of laziness and effectively use of his strength. You're correct that his right foot is as good as Arjen Robben's.

I'm not sure if I'd say he has the speed. He's got such a compact frame (and such s**t endurance) that he often looks burdened while he runs. He's not post-injury Flynn Perez levels of slow, but he's around Sheezel's pace I reckon. Nothing mind-blowing. He definitely has the skill and the overhead skills though. For sure
he's fantastic one on one when the ball is flying in. very strong. then get's pinged for a push by an umpire who would've let it go as holding ground if it were a common name like dusty.

happened about 4-5 times last year and i felt it was a little demotivational for him.

Certainly, a side-by-side video comparison of a legal push vs an illegal push in a marking contest specifically regarding Paul Curtis would be interesting to see.

Day 1 back tomorrow
No doubt another 2km time trial

Someone let us know if extra time Hugh has lived up to his new name again

He’s here mate, deep breath.

Lot more lads on the track. Arch and Chom running laps atm. Ford walked a lap.

Not sure if it was the heat, first day back or combination of both. But that session wasn’t worth the sunburn I got standing out and watching it. No shade down there, if you’re planning on heading down Friday take something with you, going to be a scorcher.

Done the 100m repeat sprints they were doing pre Xmas, this time I don’t recall anyone being eliminated (plenty missed the 20sec limit repeatedly - quick player note: Wil Dawson gave up half way for a big spew, he was cooked - B.George was trailing early, but found something and most the later runs was up the front.).

Split the ground in half and had 4 groups (2 groups on each side) doing some sort of transition drill in a 40-50m zone/box with coaches either end kicking in, which to me and the bloke next to me seemed a bit of a waste of time as they were all just kicking long to each end anyway.

Was a fair few other drills, nothing really noteworthy. Lienart took a small group (LDU, Wardlaw, Jy, Powell, Phillips, Shiels and B.George) to one side for a kicking drill, which I could only describe as something you’d see at under10’s training session. Little 5m kicks, to which the players were half assing anyway.

Only positive is from my view there were a lot more players involved today then pre Xmas. Corr, Thomas, Goad, PC were a few lads I seen over the road in the gym. Chom and Arch ran about 10 laps. Ford walked a few without a moon boot, heard him say couple weeks to someone so might be his timeline.

Finished 30mins early too, so might have just been a day to ease into it.

Conveniently booked a "job" out LaTrobe way today.

Looked like typical first session back for the year, non-contact, low intensity and some sloppy skills at times.

Rehab group training away from the main group for at least the first half of the session consisted of Corr, TT, Mac, Ford, Logue, Goad.

Comben and Archer ran quite a few laps on the main oval while some of the main training session was on. Wardlaw did some goal kicking practice away from the main group later on while one session was on, looked like a kid who was there watching was kicking the ball back to him which was a nice touch.

Transition drills seem to be the main focus still, 4 groups of about 8 players, no real pressure on the kicker or the receiver looked more about zones and choosing an outlet option.

Some one-on-one defending practice later in the session Maley v Greenwood and Xerri v Free, pretty tame, hold your ground then try to mark / spoil.

I think just about everyone was there, some players weren't wearing their number which always makes it difficult, I think the only player I couldn't see was Larkey? Can any other track watchers confirm? Maybe he's doing a "Hugh" and having an extended holiday ;)

I did see quite a few people with some pretty decent cameras there hopefully the photos pop up online soon.

Must have been a different training session than the one I was at this morning. Very impressed by what I saw.

Hey if you enjoyed it, fantastic.

Was nowhere near the level of the pre Xmas sessions though which was my point. But hopefully they’ll pick it back up now this one is out of the way.

Yep forgot to mention this one, Larks definitely wasn’t out there or over the road with the gym group from what I could see.

A book to read by the sounds of it?
