Great post and I think very likely, but it won't at all surprise me if we play only one of Greenwood and CCJ.

They were the two I thought most about, I can easily see us only going with one and giving us an extra runner eg: Tucker
CCJ has a chance over the next few weeks to demand a spot, otherwise Greenwood might play that forward ruck role. Without following GWS much over the preseason you would think Briggs rucks with Lachie Keefe giving support.

Had a go at this for R1 against GWS

Mcdonald Dawson Corr
Sheezel Comben Fisher
Scott Wardlaw Lazzaro
Zurhaar CCJ Simpkin
Stephenson Larkey PC
Xerri, LDU Powell

Mckercher, Goater, Greenwood, Phillips Sub:Stephens

Bergman, Tucker, Ford, Harvey, Shiels, Duursma miss out

I think R1 we'll go with experience. Mcdonald will get Greene, I doubt they will go with all of Cadman, Riccardi, Himmelberg and Hogan forward. If they play 3 of them we should be able to get reasonable match ups.

Obviously a lot can change over the next 4 weeks

To be honest, I don't see why Fisher has a god given right to the half back incumbency unless we are going to play Colby through the middle.

Fisher has played around 10 games of AFL footy at half back, he needs to earn that R1 spot imo, particularly given we will have the two best u22 half backs in the comp playing there if Colby suits up on a HBF.

Colby had 28 touches in 3 qtrs in the intraclub and has speed that even Fisher doesn't come close to possessing. It'd be mad to start him on the bench rotation even for a first gamer.

Not sure they have space for Keefe if they're also running with Hogan, Cadman, Himmelberg and Riccardi.

I don't think Cadman gets a game

I agree, but hearing Barlow speak this morning about him I just think he's a lock if fit.

I didn't put to much thought into the rotations, becasue I don't think it really matters these days.

Round 1 team

B: Pink & Chom

HB: Colby, LMac, Sheezel, Fisher, Scott, Goater, George & Bergman

C: Stephens & LDU

HF: Simpkin & Zurhaar

F: Larkey

Ruck: Xerri, Powell, Wardlaw
After rocking up unfit, it would reflect poorly on North Melbourne to select Fisher for round 1. The cliché "earn the respect of the boys" has merit for once.

I know a young bloke who was playing country footy in the Murray league. He was getting 1500 a week. They were flying 3 blokes down from the NT every few weeks. There is a lot of money in local footy.

Yarra has to compete with Wangaratta and Albury teams who have been paying plenty for many years. Wangaratta got rolled for going over the salary cap recently and had a big penalty.
They had the premiership taken from them in ‘22 for salary cap breach.
The Ovens & Murray is riddled with top line talent, that could easily be playing at a higher level, but the massive coin being paid is too hard to resist!

How do you define a clearance? Is it first hands within a stoppage? Or the disposal that exits the stoppage?

Eg phillips sharks it off the tap and handballs to ldu running past who kicks it 50. Who got the clearance?

My uderstanding is first disposal from a stoppage.

So WAP in my example?
Yep, first disposal after stoppage regardless if it actually 'clears' the stoppage area. Quick hands to a runner is the clearance.

There really should be a stat for non disposal clearance where a player takes possession and runs with the ball and clears the stoppage zone. Burst clearance or some such, would give an insight into the truly damaging mids.

I think its good that people get to make a good living playing footy even if they aren't good enough to make it in the AFL.

I was very impressed with Leigh Adams press conference after the game. Very positive and took the opportunity to give the "lesser known players ", like Laz and K. Dawson a big pat on the back, for their efforts in the preseason.

We go okay against Pies and…

We get belted by the Pies and…

AFL practice matches 2024: Dates, schedule, timetable, how to watch on live stream, every club’s burning question

NORTH MELBOURNE V COLLINGWOOD

Wednesday, February 21, 10am (AEDT) at AIA Centre

(4 x 25 minute periods plus 2 x 5 minute scenarios at conclusion)

Kangaroos’ burning question: Can this new-look key defensive set-up really match it with AFL forward lines?

The Roos’ defence will look vastly different in 2024. Following Ben McKay’s free agency departure to Essendon and Griffin Logue (ACL) being sidelined to start the season, the club will turn to the likes of recruit Toby Pink, Kallan Dawson and Charlie Comben to hold down its key backline posts, having appeared to settle on the trio in its intra-club match. The area of the ground where North appears most vulnerable, it’s new-look defence will get a mighty test first up (if only match simulation) against reigning premier Collingwood and its high-octane forward line. How both the Roos’ backs fare one-on-one, and how their system functions as a whole, will be an important watch.

Magpies’ burning question: Are the youngsters ready for more responsibility?

A few Collingwood younger players have put their hands up for more senior opportunities in 2024 as the reigning premiers consider turning to their next crop. So who’s ready for more responsibility? Finlay Macrae shined in the club’s intra-club match and would a veteran midfield with an injection of youth it may need from a long-term perspective. Meanwhile Dan McStay’s ACL injury has opened up a key-position spot, with Reef McInnes, who’s also impressed over the pre-season, and Ash Johnson considered to be in the mix. Such names will get their first real chance against proper competition to boost their prospects of a Round 1 berth.

serious? why would he get paid much more in a lower league?
VFL salary cap is $110k for AFL clubs.
220k for stand alone.
Edfl and country clubs can give say 50k for a coach then pay him and his wife another 100k as gardeners for jobs they never have to show up for. Smaller leagues don't get the salary cap policed like the VFL and AFL do.
From a coaching and young talent coming through perspective it's not such a bad thing. Some great young players get decent coaches because of this.

From my viewing of Wednesday's intraclub, all of Lowson, Sellers and Harrop looked worthy of a chance on an AFL List.

Lowson, however will turn 29 this year, so unlikely now to get a spot you would think.

I would prefer if someone was given that final list spot now, rather than wait until the mid-season draft.

What a morale booster that would be for one of those boys, to suddenly be on an AFL List.
Put Sellers on the list give the mid year draft unless we get a major injury of some sort then go mid year draft.
