It really just boils down to skill level for me, I certainly wouldn't pick Ollie Wines in Port's best AFL era midfield either & he actually has won the stat pad medal.

Robbie Gray was less mobile than Charlie Dixon is at the moment.

Gray won the Coaches Award and was a game winner.

You're not going to turn my on to Boak. Very good player. That's it.

Wines will get a similar treatment unless he pipes up.

Gray won the Coaches Award... now you only get votes from your own coach and the opposition coach.

So really, winning the CA Award heavily relies on your own coach thinking you're very good. And giving you votes all the time. And that'll be Ken Hinkley.

I'm not trying to start a Boak vs Gray debate or bring anything about Robbie's legacy into question.

I'm just defending Boak being unfairly marked in this thread.

Far better, jesus. This is applying maximum rose coloured glasses to James and giving Boak absolutely nothing.

Boak has just been around so long and we're all so disenfranchised that we've forgotten what his best footy looked like.

He was dragging us to wins in 2013/2014. He was still an elite midfielder in 2020, coming 2nd in the Brownlow. He had a stint in between where Hinkley played him in an impossible half forward role that only he could play with any sort of effectiveness, but if he'd been left in the midfield he'd probably have another couple of AA guernseys.

Roger James was very good at his best but he wasn't as good as Travis Boak at his best. And his best footy didn't last for anywhere near as long as Boak's best footy did.

Can't agree with your comments on Boaks stint at half forward. Imo he was killing us in the midfield at that time coz he couldn't get any separation from the opposition midfielders & it resulted in so much congestion & continunal ball ups. It was horrible to watch & totally ineffective team wise. After he went to the US & improved his fitness & pace he became a more effective midfielder again & played some great footy.

Roger James at his best was a more skilful player than Travis Boak at his best imo. And James could kick goals from anywhere coz of his skill level. Travis had a few great years when his pace & experience peaked and obviously Travis has contributed way more to PA as a player than Roger.

As a captain I felt Travis lacked the mongrel & hunger to lead our team to a flag. Many supporters will disagree with me. One thing we can't debate is his loyalty to PA & I'm very grateful for that.
