Geeze I'm hollow now. Wont feel like the same Melbourne without him. Hopefully I get over that soon. He along with davey and robbo is our excitement machine. You'll understand after about 5 games. I was actually at the stage where when TJ is running into goal you dnt even feel like he's ever gonna miss. You just mark it down. The way he makes time for himself and skirts the boundary lines is amazing, truly has a gift. My fav ever player. Hope he rips it up for you :thumbsu:

He will be extremely good for brisbane, and that earlier post about looking at second options is spot on, i think trav was the best decision maker in the dees lineup..
ps keep him away from hollywood showgirls on the coast..

Melbourne supporters >>>> all other supporters >>>> ear wax >>>> Collingwood supporters.

A bit harsh on some Collingwood supporters....many I have come across are actually pretty decent.

But I take your point.

The Melbourne people that have posted on this thread have been most magnanimous....so good on them:thumbsu:

I hope they get to enjoy some success soon.

The good thing about adding another class midfielder is that it makes it much harder for the opposition to be able shut us down just by tagging.

Travis is more of an outside player, with fantastic delivery. I imagine he'll have the ball in his hands a lot when we're going inside forward 50.

Thanks.

I also wonder about his durability. Recently we've seen many players finished by the time they're 30 or 31, simply due to wear and tear or the game having sped up and passed them by.

I guess Johnstone isn't at the bottom of packs all the time, so hopefully his body can hold together for a fair while yet. Also however the game may change, skills will always be important. If he's got pace that'll be a plus as well.

I'm hoping we can get 4-5 years good service out of him at least.

Any idea on Johnstone's pace? And does he seem to have good speed off the mark?

One of those players who isn't exceptionally quick, but always seems to have plenty of time. Like Nige.

I know he is an outside midfielder, but Travis Johnstone can get his own ball, he is not a soft football player, he will put his head over the ball, just he is most effective at the receiving end of a handball rather then dishing one out, not to say he can't.

Agree with that. And if he doesn't put his head over the ball, no matter who, he'll be playing for Suncoast Lions.

We're hoping Lappin can be more durable than others due to his playing style. I guess I'm hoping the same with Travis, in that he'll remain a quality footballer into his 30s.

If anyone is interested, you may like to read the SEN thread .. page 161-162 post 2411....re: TJ..........Did receive a PM about this, certainly hope not true....if it is, it raises the question of getting rid of Aka, who only had "foot in mouth" problems, but contributed significately to our success....to go on and recruit a second-hand unknown quantity.....

I had a read & think I know where it is headed.
It is purely hearsay & to be honest as you know anyone can ring SEN. Lets face it all someone needs to do is have the ability to dial a phone to get on.

2nd hand unknown quantity?
Football wise he is certainly not a unknown quantity.
He is no angel & that is common knowledge, but neither was Pikey.

TJ from memory has only ever been coached by Neale Daniher, which is a point that I thought may well have been raised at some stage. A change going to a club with experienced midfield support, with an esteemed coach should suit.

Just hope in the future that not all experienced recruits with some background continue to get compared to Aker. Very tiresome.
Surely if anyone Pikey is the benchmark.

TJ deserves our support & stuff like this serves no real purpose IMO.

You raise a good point there Bobby. I get a chuckle out of posters complaining about Mathews being a hard task master. I reckon so what! It seems that champions like Akermanis (yes him), Blacky, Browny, Charmo, Nig, Vossy etc had no complaints as premierships are/were the aim. To also use Freo as an example it looks as though they may have been run a bit soft under Connelly. I look forward to finding out if Travis has the mettle to cut it. We all know he has silky skills but lets see how he goes once the going gets tough.

New Lion at homeArticle

TRAVIS Johnstone might be packing his bags to leave the city he's lived in all his life, but in some ways he is coming home.

Brisbane's prized recruit is the grandson of a Fitzroy team of the century member. Lions blood courses through his veins.

Norm Johnstone played 228 games with the Lions between 1944 and 1957 and the family, although obviously forming a connection with Melbourne while Travis was a Demon, are old Fitzroy people who have taken to the Brisbane Lions since the merger.

"They were all Fitzroy, and they've supported Brisbane and gone to functions since the Lions formed," Johnstone said.

"Mum and Dad, Nan and Pop are all pretty excited, they would have backed me whichever way I went, but there is that connection there."

In some ways Johnstone bucks the trend. Many Victorians aren't that impressed with the idea of leaving the so-called footy capital of Melbourne to head to the AFL backwater of Brisbane.

And then there's Queensland's famed heat which takes its toll on many a pale-skinned southerner. But Johnstone couldn't be happier.

"I think I will find that pretty good, there's a lot of spotlight in Melbourne, there's something in the papers every day and it will be good to get away," he said.

"And I enjoy the heat, the weather is going to be warm up there and that was actually a consideration for me."

But weather and lifestyle is one thing, the key consideration had to be about the footy, and Johnstone was impressed by the image of the future Brisbane painted.

He is an old Teal Cup teammate of Luke Power and the Lions midfielder joined fellow co-captain Simon Black as part of the welcoming committee that pitched its case on a visit to the Gabba on Wednesday.

"They think they are not far off having a fair crack," he said. "They have a good spread of players at a good age, I've watched them a fair bit and after the performances of the last 12 months they are right up there, not far away at all.

"I guess if they can fit me in to help out Lukey and Simon Black, it's another experienced player into the mix and with Daniel Bradshaw back we can be right back up there."

Johnstone played 160 games and kicked 111 goals in 10 years with the Demons. He was a No.1 draft pick and the 2005 best and fairest winner.

It is understandable walking away was a tough call. "It was the hardest decision of my life," he said.

"I had two days to go over it and I can tell you they were two very sleepless nights. But now I've done it I feel really good, I've made the right decision."

I know it has been mentioned that his grandfather played for Fitzroy, but I don't think that does justice to his grandfather. He is a Fitzroy Legend.
Ask any Lion old enough & he is an all time Fitzroy favourite.
Norm was regarded as one of the toughest players in his time & would run through brick walls if required for the Club. Opposition players were fearful of him & it was this toughness that endured him to the Lion faithful.
But that was not the only element to his game, Norm could really play.

Great to add another Fitzroy background to already strong links of Brown, Power, Selwood & alike.
