Why on earth is Hunter challenging? Ran up and smashed his hip into the head of someone who had his head over the ball. Bizarre.

Unless they think they can get off on the wording of the charge or something. Its odd.

Points for trying though

They should be very happy with a week given he's run into the contest late and collected Rozee in the head with his hip.

It's in the open field, he's got time to assess and make a decision and elects to go in that hard to a player who'd had his head over the ball well before he got there. Really not sure what they can argue about the grading, careless/high/medium.

Lachie Hunter trying to throw Rozee under the bus in his bid to get let off. Maybe if he played the ball and not the man like Connor did he would have nothing to worry about.

Is this serious?

Bending over to try and make contact with the ball is extremely dangerous... well I suppose he's right when you're going up against a guy making no effort for the ball and only looking to make contact with a hip.

Narrm (Melbourne) wingman Lachie Hunter has failed to overturn his one-match suspension for a bump on Port Adelaide’s Connor

Melbourne representative Adrian Anderson said Hunter was contesting the ball and doing so reasonably. “He braces for impact at the last split second and it was reasonable for him to do so,” Anderson said.

The Demons also made an alternative submission contact was caused by circumstances outside of Hunter’s control that couldn’t be reasonably foreseen.
They said Rozee lunged forward to try tap the ball between his legs rather than gather the ball in an ordinary fashion.
“I believe I tried to show a duty of care to both my own body and Connor’s. I think I stopped dead in my tracks once I realised there was going to be contact,” Hunter said.
The ex-Bulldog initially said he was “fairly sure” his eyes were on the ball for the whole duration of the contest, but on re-examination admitted it was “slightly harder to tell” near the point of contact.
“There comes a point in which my version of contesting the ball is stopping Connor Rozee’s tap from going on to the next person ... I think I can gain possession by stopping that tap and winning that secondary contest,” he said.

However Tribunal chair Jeff Gleeson found against Hunter. “We find that Hunter was not contesting the ball,” he said in the Tribunal’s statement of reasons.
“Eyes were on Rozee and not the ball as he shaped his body sideways. His hands were not reaching for the ball as he shaped his body sideways.
“He was not attempting to pick the ball up. He was not attempting to trap the ball.
“Even if we were to have concluded Hunter was contesting the ball, we would’ve found it was not reasonable for him to contest the ball in that way.
“He knew or should’ve known that Rozee was coming towards him at speed.
“He was reaching for the ball, he was low and as a result of reaching for the ball his head was exposed… he could and should’ve positioned himself in a way so as to minimize impact to Rozee.”

Players' night on AFL360. Jack Riewoldt and Jeremy Howe unhesitatingly threw Hunter under the bus.

A lot of people seem to dislike Riewoldt but I actually find him not bad to listen too.
Not frightened to voice an opinion and he has no issue with taking the piss at himself.

Surprised to hear that people have a problem with him. Really can't be people who've listened to him.
You're dead right in how he presents, it's why FOX use him regularly. You'd have loved the couple of drive-by slaps he gave co-commentator Jordan Lewis on AFL360 the other night.

Was it Jack that gave Jonas a bit of a scrotum tickle in that 2020 match at Adelaide Oval? I think it's stuff like that possibly. But I do agree, he is interesting to listen to from a players perspective on the game, for sure.

Part of me doesn’t disagree with Healy. Lord did get all out of shape and could have caused some serious injuries.

But what about the absolute grub hits on Boak? That caused an actual injury, but hasn’t be mentioned.

Friday night was tough conditions, wet and slippery. Healy picking this incident further demonstrates how poor a commentator he is. There was actually worse contact in that game.

So he mentions Lords slide but not Vineys two footer into Houston? Funny that

Lord was clumsy. Viney's double footed studs up 1970s soccer style leg breaker was ****ing malicious. Astonishing that he's chosen to highlight that one from the game

I wouldn't mind him talking about Lord's clumsy slide if he had given ample time to Viney - it is however astonishing that an AFL broadcasting veteran could get so deep in the weeds on attacking what a 4-gamer did, whilst giving absolutely no time to a veteran sniper who actually should know better. It's only Kane that even mentions Viney, but they really give no time to it.

Not to be all teal-tinted glasses but Lord as a 4-gamer in his first big Friday night clash, horrible conditions, etc - he looked clumsy rather than overtly intentional. Now, that's not to excuse if he had caused injury, & he probably needs to think about it going forward. But Viney looked like he intentionally went to ground in an effort to disrupt, made contact, & had Houston on his behind for a good few seconds there. Again, not trying to be biased - but I'm just astonished that they chose to focus on Lord in this instance. Both should have been discussed, and the difference between the actions of a greenhorn versus that of a proper veteran should have been established for a bit of context.

And as you said, it wasn't like it was the only incident. Viney in Boak's back was also grubby as all hell - same player, so even adds some context to the above discussion about actions and possible intent.

Viney into Boak's back.
Viney giving JHF a hit around the ears at the end of the first...
Viney sliding in arms first in the third quarter...
Viney with the leg breaker on Houston.

But yeah, focus on the time the 4 game player went to ground desperately trying to get at the ball.
