Triple J Hottest 100 of All Time

Remove this Banner Ad

because of the recent commercial success KoL has gained, i think you'll find a lot of their hardcore fans (myself kind of included i guess) will definitely vote for their older, better stuff.. wouldn't suprise me if something like The Bucket, Milk, California Waiting or Taper Jean Girl finished top 20.. unfortunately i still get the feeling Sex On Fire will superseed them. it's a top 10 lock for certain you'd think?

Can't see Kings Of Leon doing that well in the all-time poll.

The Hottest 100 on Australia Day has become such a commercialised thing that fair weather listeners and even people that have never listened to the station vote for songs.

I have little doubt that there would have been young girls wondering why the hell Lady Gaga wasn't an option in voting for last year's poll. Voting on the Australia Day Hottest 100 is the 'cool' thing to do these days and people don't need to listen to the station to know it's happening because it's annual.

The all time voting, however, has not been widely publicised outside of the station. People I know that would vote on the Oz Day poll had no idea there was an all time count coming up.

With that I hope that means those who have a good idea of what real classic songs are and will vote accordingly will have the majority of a say on this poll.

Fairweater listeners be gone!

Hopefully you're right, ripitup, you make a good point. The fact there is no set list of songs to choose from might help things too.

PS. Respect for the Kenny Rogers/Will Sasso avatar. One of my favourite sketches ever. Seen his Fred Durst one before?

Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads
Redemption Song - Bob Marley
Ghost Town - The Specials
Johnny Cash - Hurt
London Calling - The Clash
War Pigs - Black Sabbath
Madness - Baggy Trousers
Black - Pearl Jam
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
Desolation Row - Bob Dylan
Layla - Derek and the Dominos
Freebird (Live) - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Apache - The Incredible Bongo Band

Had that as my shortlist before the site crapped out on me. Trying to avoid the obligatory choices like Stairway to Heaven and Teen Spirit which everyone is going to vote for anyway.

Is it limited to stuff that's been played on JJJ?

My top 10 was:
The Beatles - Get Back
The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
The Rolling Stones - Jumpin' Jack Flash
The Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
The Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With Butterfly Wings
Bloc Party - Banquet
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire
Beastie Boys - Sabotage

It was alot harder than I thought, once I got started on my shortlist it just spiralled out of control. I must admit, after looking at it I was rather dissappointed that no Australian artists made my top 10. In the end I went with my favourite artists and then my favourite song from that artist, as for the Pumpkins and the Stones I couldn't seperate the two tracks.

the ones that are quite common are smells like teen spirit
blur - song 2 - please dont forget this one
the verve - bittersweet symphony
joy division - love will tear us apart
beastie boys - intergalactic
pearl jam - alive
soundgarden - black hole sun
rage against the machine - testify
offspring - come out and play - they were a good band before they sold out (agree?) - i reckon this song is considered triple j material

ones i hope people havent forgotten

underworld - born slippy
supergrass - alright
iggy pop - feat nina persson - candy
massive attack - angel

are any of these bands worthy of being on the list - or are they just too mainstream and successful?

powderfinger would be in that list, no doubt about it

the only song theyve ever done thats done something for me is 'these days'

the rest is all conformist sell out radio friendly numbers

a few more off the top of my head
u2 - lemon
blue monday by new order

another band that has been forgotten in the sands of time is depeche mode - for those quite willing, check out their singles 1986>1998, its a great collection of songs

You might find it was Kate Pierson from the B52's that sang Candy with Iggy Pop not the chick from The Cardigans.

Why can't you be on the list if you are mainstream or successful? A good song is a good song...

Not that I think any of the songs you have listed are particularly good songs I am just interested in why success or middle of the roadness means you can't be on the list?

Here are my votes:

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Waiting In Vain
Faith No More - Midlife Crisis
Beck - Loser
The Prodigy - Voodoo People
Radiohead - Airbag
The Tragically Hip - Ahead By A Century
The Cure - Close To Me
Daft Punk - One More Time
Dr. Octagon - Blue Flowers
Rage Against the Machine - Wake Up

I found this a very difficult task.

And in the days since I made my entry, I have been thinking of songs that I should've/could've put in my ten songs.

But anyway, here's my ten picks.

Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Chile
Midnight Oil - Read About It
David Bowie - Heroes
Faith No More - A Small Victory
Rage Against the Machine - Killing In The Name
Nirvana - Lithium
Public Enemy - Terminator X To The Edge Of Panic
Beastie Boys - Time To Get Ill
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
U2 - The Fly

Metallica - One
Foo Fighters - Everlong
Rage Against the Machine - Killing In The Name
Blink 182 - Dammit
Pearl Jam - Alive
Foo Fighters - My Hero
Guns N' Roses - Paradise City
Lifehouse - Hanging By A Moment
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside
The Offspring - Gone Away

How anyone can still enjoy smells like teen spirit is beyond me.

When exactly did they sell out? Don't say Pretty Fly either, as it is a novelty/parody/tongue-in-cheek song just like Come Out and Play. That argument that they sold out because of Pretty Fly is the most flawed argument out there. Their new album is pretty solid by the way.

Anyways, my top 10 went like this:

Black - Pearl Jam
Tomorrow - Silverchair
Self Esteem - The Offspring
Spoonman - Soundgarden
1979 - The Smashing Pumpkins
Loser - Beck
Everlong - Foo Fighters
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
Wake Up - RATM
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Can people still vote for it if they liked it when it came out?

Damned, The - Smash It Up
Utah Saints - Something Good
Pixies - Monkey Gone To Heaven
Andy Prieboy - Tomorrow Wendy
Blondie - Hanging On The Telephone
Heaven 17 - Temptation
Magic Dirt - Dirty Jeans
Saints, The - (i'm) Stranded
Siouxsie and The Banshees - Hong Kong Garden
Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back In Town

Just voted for songs I liked, hopefully a few of mine will make it in.

No I haven't I'll have to get onto it. The Kenny Rogers skit was and still is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Such a no brainer.

Finally got my 10 together, although I'm not sure I'm happy with it. Left out some great songs by Epicure and I'm going through a preiod much respect for the OK Computer album at the moment.

But in terms of songs that have had an impact on me or bring back some good memories I went with:

Good Riddance - Green Day
Alive - Pearl Jam
Dammit - Blink 182
Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger
Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry
Fortunate Son - CCR
Not The Same - Bodyjar
Welcome to the Black Parade - MCR
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Prisoner Of Society - The Living End

Got my 10 finally sorted... had a good 40-odd but struggled and narrowed it down. Sorta used my tie-breaker for a few songs as the ones more likely to make it... probably the wrong way to go, but so be it :)

CAKE - The Distance
Faith No More - Epic
Interpol - Evil
Kings of Leon - Milk
Living End, The - Second Solution
Muse - Stockholm Syndrome
Nirvana - Lithium
Radiohead - Talk Show Host
Streets, The - Don't Mug Yourself
System of a Down - Toxicity

Radiohead - Paranoid Andriod
Pink Floyd - Time
Beatles, The - A Day in the Life
Muse - Knights Of Cydonia
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Killers, The - Mr. Brightside
Coldplay - The Scientist
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
Radiohead - No Surprises

Spent ages before making a shortlist and it ****ed up so had to do it again, this is what I came up with.

Verve, The - Bitter Sweet Symphony
Libertines, The - Can't Stand Me Now
Strokes, The - Hard To Explain
Radiohead - Creep
Dave Brubeck - Take Five
John Lennon - Imagine
Coldplay - Politik
Maximo Park - The Coast Is Always Changing
Beatles, The - Come Together
Modest Mouse - The World At Large

Took me a few days to get this list whittled down. Hate to think of some classics which I have forgotten.
