Article from Caro about the demons current state.

Officially coming out and saying the name means nothing. Dangerous thing to hear with a couple of teams coming in on the horizon.

As usual, Paul Gardner blows some hot air about whats going to happen. MCC decreasing money hurts (hope i get a cheaper membership).

thoughts on the dee's survival chances. i always thought it hinged on the name.....

Someone will prop them up.....

Same. Its the only thing that's kept them out of relocation/merger's way for the last 20 years.

Very sad, but my bones have been telling me for years that it isn't North or the Dogs to go... it will be the Demons.

Doesnt matter who it is, it will be the closing of a chapter in history, family and friendships as well as Football and we will all be worse off for it.

If and when the Dees do go to the wall, I like the idea of them, or any other team that has it's identity taken away, having a side in the VFL. You never know, maybe one day that could make it back?

IMO there was no reason for Fitzroy to 'die', they should've somehow stayed alive in the next best comp... A relegation basically.

AFL to VFL aint death, its just a downgrade in costs... and you never know what the future may bring.

Have long believed they have needed to get away from the MCG or more correctly the MCC. Too many of their supporters buy MCC memberships (why wouldn't you) and their connection to the 'establishment' gives them a less than vibrant feel.

One thing about Nth Melbourne and the Dogs is, no matter how much they have struggled both clubs exhibit passion and energy. Sadly Melbourne doesn't - I'm not saying they don't have passionate supporters, they do, but the club seems tired.

Maybe the answer is for Melbourne to re-locate (I know it's a dirty word), and open up a new market but it seems the choice area's have been taken by the new club's. Maybe the Newcastle area or even be the 3rd club out of Perth. Unfortunately I don't see them surviving in the long term in Melbourne, their traditional core support is slowly disappearing with nothing replacing it. Remember, this is the club that voted for a merger and the only reason it didn't happen was because Hawthorn voted no.

You would see a dramatic increase in memberships and the like if we admit to a crisis. I'm not saying its the way to go but if you came out and said "This clubs in trouble we need your help", you'll find those long lost "supporters" will come back. Because the message is "Oh everthings fine down here", everyones just leaving it up to the person next to them. For the sake of the argument i'm an MCC members with 2 Mebourne memberships.

While it is all true, the FL shouldn’t have this in the public domain. If this came to Caro via an AFL source, as usually happens, it is pretty poor. If it came from Melbourne then it means someone or a group want to out those in charge which si a good thing IMO. Dees are in massive strife. Have been for years. Hopefully McNamee is part of the answer but I can’t see the current board as part of it. Melbourne need someone as yet unknown to put their hand up, There is a lot of wealth that supports Melbourne but the club just doesn’t seem to engender enough passion. That’s not to say there aren’t passionate supporters because there are at every club but frankly a few thousand average Joe passionate supporters can’t support an AFL team for 3 weeks let alone indefinitely.

i think i seen somthing about Tasmainia needing a team down there, Maybe they could go there and change there name from The Demons to The Devil's.

That would be as likely as them merging with Geelong.

I have a feeling that mergers are going to be back in the AFL/Media agenda given that there are no clubs looking at relocation.

Maybe they could drop back into VFL like someone before said and when this new team comes along we wont have to change our 16 teams system.

All I can state is that I would prefer this to happen to my club, way ahead of relocation/merger.

I hope the AFL clubs band together and help the Demons out.

What happened with Fitzroy was nothing less than cultural genocide.

Looks like the AFL and it's number one doomsayer, having missed North, are now lining up Melbourne.

Stand firm and fight, Demons.:thumbsu:

What he said.

Do not let this shit get toyou. She is just a fuken feral afl ____ sucking maggot. If we brought her down, so can you.

Once again what Teflon said. Most of us hoped that if we lost the battle, then would have rathered to play in the VFL than to be relocated/merged.

We have a Perth Demons already with the same colours. They (melb) could slip straight in and target the Perth inner suburbs. Move West Coast north to Joondalup, leave Freo with the south. The toaster would probably get all hot because the think they have some sought of ownership of Subi but all that will change anyway once the new stadium is built. 3 teams out of WA would be a good thing.

Caro said:
THE AFL has delivered a stunning broadside to the Melbourne Football Club, informing the Demons' board that its brand was meaningless and that it virtually stood for nothing in 2008, the club's 150th season.

In a full and frank assessment of the club's dire predicament delivered by the competition's governing body three days ago, Melbourne was told it had to face up to its financial crisis and dreadful public image if it had any chance of digging itself out of its black hole.

I must say that i found this to be a pretty tough statement from the AFL if infact it did happen!

Maybe their agenda is still a 16 or 17 team competition after all??

good article and exposes the mess that is our club. if anything it is probably good news considering our board and club has been complacent hopefully this shifts them up a gear.

this article should be sent to every member who has not signed on from last year

I have no doubt that their agenda is a 14 team competition with only 5 or 6 clubs in Melbourne.

I doubt they will go below the current number of teams, unless of course the TV networks actually wanted less games to show. Why do you have no doubt?

The Tassie Devils has a good ring to it. Seven home games at Launceston, two at Hobart, two at the MCG.

They get their identity back, and Tasmania gets a team, and the traditional Melbourne supporters still get two home games a year, which is all they attend anyway. They might even get some sponsors. And the VFL feeder team is already there and in need of an injection.

And the AFL can still target Western Sydney and the Gold Coast.
