Roast U-16 Blocked from Social Media

Tell that to the families who have tragically lost their children to bullying on social media. You've got the blinkers on. Just one of many examples below.

Yes, I said despite the reporting. Reporting on youth suicide has increased. Murdoch press has been campaiging hard against social media, but actual suicide has been trending downward since 2018. All of it is awful and if it can be lowered further that would be great. However, all I was saying is that if it does continue the downward trend, we won't actually know what impact this law has had on it. Just as if it trends upwards again we won't know what impact this law has had on an upward trend.

Parents monitoring their child's phone will still be able to receive alerts about new app downloads, so it won't be an issue.

and See what they been doing on Certain Apps like Chat and Social Media ones. They can be as Kids Versions of those Apps

That is why the government has to try something, and hopefully, as I said, it will save lives and improve the mental health of our kids and youth.

My 13-year-old nephew can't download TikTok, Snapchat, and other social media apps because his mom has blocked access to those sites. Since his parents are paying for an internet connection, using a VPN might be an issue for him, and to be honest, at 13 years of age, he has no idea what a VPN is. If these social media laws save a single life, then they've achieved their objective, even if some kids find a way around them.
The way Nephew Parents have done is a Really Good Idea

Could they Role something like this out to Family's instead?

Still not 100% that would work but better then the 1st Goverment Idea

Yeah, it works well, TD. If my nephew wants to download an app to his phone, his parents will get an alert on their phone, and they can either approve the app for download or reject it. He complains to me that most of his friends have Snapchat and that his mum won't let him download it on his phone. I tell him that it's for his own good and that he will understand when he is older. It works a treat.

Check out some other stories, like the young kids who are hassled for being 'different' and only find their tribe through social media.

Closing down their outlet to the world and the possibility of connecting with people like them is guaranteed to cause a lot of mental damage.

Social media is toxic, and these kids need to be protected. The government seems to agree with me, and I know many other Australians do, too.

Like the government, you've decided not to address the point I raised at all.

Social media is a lot of things. It can be toxic. It can be enlightening. It connects people with similar interests and issues and can make life less lonely. It can animate people to take action to change the world for the better and it gives them the tools to do it.

The negatives of the format can be managed, improved, maybe thought about more carefully and tackled in a way which doesn't close it down and which doesn't subject the entire country to greater risk of privacy and data breaches.

I disagree. I believe that kids today have numerous ways to communicate, thanks to messaging apps and a variety of technologies at their disposal. Individuals younger than 16 are often at greater risk, making them more vulnerable to predators and bullying. It is essential to protect this age group and ensure their safety.

It's not about having a mode of communication. Yeah, they can use phones and email as well.

It's about the need to find the people they want to speak to, people who are like them or who have similar experiences to them.

Again, it's just not something you or Albanese are inclined to consider, because it complicates what is otherwise a very simplistic view of things.

My social group and generation have successfully navigated life without social media, just as countless other generations have. I'm not saying to ban all social media, but there are apps like Snapchat and TikTok that should be considered prohibited for kids under 16. We'll agree to disagree.

They haven't done enough work or spent enough time working out whether their approach is going to be effective. There is a definite possibility in it not just being ineffective but being detrimental. It's a pre-election promise in response ot Murdoch having chosen social media as a target put into legislation to say they're tackling the issue that Murdoch has worked us up into a frenzy about.

I do think that they're probably on an ok path, but it's a guess by all concerned and it's not something to guess about.

The good old days when you just got punched, kicked, had a bike chain wrapped around your head plus the bullying!

Yes I'm being flippant but it seems to me we're better placed than we use to be.

As always, I believe, edumacation is the way to go.

Flippant or not, your point is well made.
Back in the “good old days” you could go home and get away from those situations.
Today those situations are in the palm of your hand 24/7 no matter where in the world you are.
And that’s why government is acting. As governments are charged to do. Not sit on their hands and say “to hard, to hard”.

There's an interesting timeline to the growth in this issue becoming a big one in the minds of Australians.

April - Meta announces that it is going to stop paying for news feeds on Facebook and Instagram.
May - Newscorp press start running front pages on social media and announces a campaign to ban it's use amongst under 16s
Nov - The issue has become a big one and the government rushes through some legislation without the expected community or expert consultation.

Meanwhile the infinitely simpler issue of gambling advertising is too complicated to come up with legislation and the focus groups and meetings about it are into year 2 following a comprehensive report with some very clear recommendations. Lacks the Murdoch spotlight positioning us to one side and bypassing debate.

IF that bad should all Social Media be Banned for Everyone then?

Goverment do what the People who Donate/Bribe them to do

The ridiculous thing is that the site which research suggests has the highest rates of bullying of teens isn't on the list: YouTube. Getting their silly videos off tiktok and onto YouTube where more of the concerned adults who want the ban are present and will kick the boot in sounds like a great idea. Lots of research has gone into this.

In a September 10 statement the country’s leading mental health organisations warned that the ban would likely worsen the mental health of young people.

Signed by Beyond Blue, the Black Dog Institute, Headspace and seven other prominent organisations, the statement warned: “The proposed social media ban will risk cutting young people across Australia off from mental health support, exposing them to new harms, and leaving many without any support.” The statement noted recent research, showing that as many as 73 percent of young people report having used social media for mental health support.

This statement was simply ignored by the Albanese government.

"Concern for mental health of adolescents" as justification for the ban of social media for U 16s is a cynical lie, from politicians who have no clue about the complex issues involved in the mental health of adolescents. Specialists in the field are warning them that this ban will actually damage the mental health of those it claims to be protecting.
