Agreed Lemms, strong word is VAFA are changing U19s to U20s next year. Their aim is to strengthen 18's comp with the 'schools' that currently run 2 x 19s changing to 18s & 20s. Hope it works for the future of the 18s comp.

Why change a successful U19s structure just to prop up an ailing U18 competition? What about this scenario. At present the strongest clubs (Xavs, De La etc) have a 19s team in Premier and a 19s team in lower grade. They operate like a seniors and reserves and this model has been successful for years. What happens now to a 19 year old who is not quite good enough to make to the 19 Premier team at a strong club? He is too old to play 18s and with no second 19 team he will miss out completely.

The 18s was supposedly set up to assist the district clubs but they are not supporting the concept anyway. One D1 VAFA club moved their 18s to the SFL because they don’t want to travel. I guess there is no harm in giving it a try but it runs the risk of weakening a strong U19 comp just to put some life into an U18 comp that most clubs don’t want anyway.

If they go to this new model ( which appears likely) they should scrap these half arsed qualification rules and do it properly. If you play U18s you must be a legit under 18. Same with the U20s and no more allowance for a certain number of overage kids.

Your right Rooster, my understanding is that it will be definite 18s and 20s with no allowance to drop 4 down. Although in their defence this rule was meant to apply to U19lads not getting a game in their respective side not as a boost to their U18 side.

Agree Minder. The intent was probably honourable but unfortunately some clubs exploited it. It was used to strengthen teams and legit U18s missed out so talented overage kids could qualify for play finals. That’s why it needs to be one or the other.

I think you will find the VAFA plan for 2012 is to have U19s (under the age of 19 as at 31/12/12) and U20s (under the age of 20 as at 31/12/12) and no overage allowed.
The current system is U18s (18 or under as at 1/7/11) and U19s (19 or under as at 1/7/11), with up to 4 U19s allowed to play in U18s each week.
So the changes will align under age qualifications with almost all other junior competitions (being 31/12).

Do you guys rate williamstown? seems like all the talk is about werribee...
although the talk for rupo is well deserved look like a quality side

they're not the worst of teams but they definitely don't match the excellence of wezza
Us boys have more strength, skill and smarts so we will outplay you every time

Williamstown have not put a foot wrong and appear to be deserved flag favorites at this point in time. All the talk about Werribee appears to be coming from within, so make of it what you will .

Williamstown 34 d Rupo 19. Game played in atrocious conditions, but in great spirit. Williamstown deserve flag favortism.
Sorry Mindy, techo issues at the Lemms household - didn't enter any tips. Probably would have taken the same if that's any consolation.
