Umpires taking responsibility

People need to separate the result from the umpiring

I'm a believer in the chaos theory, maybe if the bounce is recalled we lose by 10 goals. Maybe if we get a free in the mess at the end, we miss the goal anyway.

But decision tonight were terrible, and the standards are pathetic. One of the biggest issues is since James Hird copped that massive fine years ago, nobody in a public forum has the balls to speak up and slam it, and worse whoever does, nobody is willing to listen.

I heard someone from the AFL say that the ball up not being called back was wrong and everybody on the panel (forget which radio station) just said "yep thats fine, as long as you acknowledge it you're free to do it again". Its not fine, there needs to be accountability.

I dont know if umpires are being 'dropped' after bad performances and what they determine as bad. I dont know what they say when they sit behind closed doors, but the lip service they pay during the week when justifying obviously wrong decisions is insulting. I dont know if making them professional would help, but the standards are pathetic across the board and tonight was another showing of terrible umpiring in a billion dollar sport

Umpires irrelevant in a game decided by a kick and several indecisions? Get off it.

You're allowed to win games by a point, the umpires should officiate fairly and in a close game they were the difference where even the opposition admitted their faults.

You could pick out a heap of things in this game that cost Carlton. Umpires are only one of a few very small reasons Geelong got up. Name any game where a team wins by around a goal or less and you will struggle not to find an umpiring decision or two that decided the result. It's footy.

I very very rarely comment on the umpiring. Tonight's umpiring was beyond ridiculous, not just against Carlton. Absolutely farcical.

  1. What was the deal with the 'touched goal'? Our player claimed he'd kicked it, and pleaded for a score review (supposedly touched on the line) - no word from the umpires, when the commentators discussed it from multiple angles? Goal umpire too quick to make a decision?
  2. Levi gets his head ripped off in a tackle while lying on the ground and it's holding the ball?

So you concede it was a factor. It shouldn't be one at all. I believe we did enough to win, I believe there were crucial decisions that went against us that were more influential than a regularly officiated match.

There's no bravado in claiming umpires never effect the outcome, you're allowed to be aggrieved in stages of your life... Unless you believe the AFL has fostered a level playing field.

Only time we get the run of the green against other sides is when we are getting smashed or smashing another team.

Close games just see us get shafted time and time again.

you can win games of footy with the umpiring not going your way. Poor excuse for a loss, we just weren't quite good enough.

Rarely does umpiring directly lead to a result. Maybe one or two per season. This is a PERFECT example of umpiring directly changing a result. A free 10m out, our best shot at goal with 15seconds remaining is the DEFINITION of umpiring costing the game. Do you have comprehension issues?

Looking past the specific decision and the result of the match, the final 30 seconds were unacceptable and would have been no matter what the margin was. The rolling scrum is NOT what this game is about.

Obviously, I mean what else could it have been . My point was that it is never called. I'm sure if that was Henderson we wouldn't be happy with the play on call. Unless you have another smart arse comment to add?
I have a lot of smart arsed comments to make... but you are not worth a week off from the board.

But suffice to say, you could walk between Teflon Tony's legs without touching his low hanging fruit while he walks under the belly of a snake.

I suspect the point gbatman is making is that there are many incidents that go into a game, and that perhaps Docherty not turning it over on the wing, or Garlett kicking the ball 60cm higher, or McLean's inability to handball all impacted on the result. Just because Menzel didn't get a free kick with 10 seconds to go doesn't mean many other incidents weren't of equal (or more) importance. Maybe.

This is true... SOAP doesnt usually pot the umpires... unless it's in the game thread and then he will let loose with both barrels.

In the NBA, on a blatantly missed call, the league will issue a statement "Yup, we got that one wrong"

does it fix the result? Hell no, but at least it's something!

why is the AFL umpiring fraternity, so farcical? A billion dollar entity, and we have part timers deciding outcomes. It's a joke

Will do.

yup, i NEVER bang on about the umpires generally. Last week was tough to cop, but this week, I can't handle.

Enough is enough

I want someone from our club, to wear whatever ruddy fine, and flat out say, it's not good enough
Get "rent-a-quote" Mathieson to get out there and have a massive shot at the umpires... he can afford whatever fine the AFL decides to levy on him...
