They voted for a renowned child sniffing 2 brain anasrim dementia sufferer who tried to shake hands with a flag pole, never knew how to get off a stage or seemingly never knew where he was. There's even footage of the secret service chasing after him down the White house lawn because he couldn't follow the footpath Infront of him among many other cases where he confused his granddaughter with his late son Buea

And my personal favourite where he accidentally says we cannot get reelected we can only reelect Donald Trump and they fake fact checked it to make it seem like it didn't happen when it did (clear evidence in the link)
Electing trump is a symptom of their clear decline

Donald Trump didn't do anything, the Dems did this to themselves, twice. In 2016 and 2024. They screwed themselves and America. Once, it's a aberration, a mistake, a lesson learned. Twice or more its a trend, a choice, a pattern.

2016 was an aberration, basically a small group of voters in the rust belt won it for Trump and at the time he was an unknown quantity, mostly. Hillary also easily won the popular vote.

But when 2024 rolls around and 20 million less voters turn out for you, enough to lose the popular vote for the first time since 2004, against a known quantity which many acknowledge is not a nice person (to put it lightly) - questions have to be asked.

Compared to Harris he's Thomas Edison. At least he can answer a question :)
No, he's can't. At all. He just rants some nonsensical crap.

What ****ing question have you seen him answer that wasn't complete bullshit?

No idea, but he seems to have a street level sense of who is weak and who isn't. Probably comes from years in real estate I'm guessing.

The same thing was said 8 years ago, he was either a complete moron or an evil genius. Can't be both. At least not at the same time.

Yeah he knows how to read people, 100%. Street level hustler.

Not smart in the book smart sense but in looking to read people and exploit weaknesses, that’s his super power.

Now if only such power could be used for good….

People need to try and make sense of what's happening in their own way.

Oddly enough, these are probably some of the most meaningful discussions a lot of people have about politics, so it seems like a healthy process rather than a simple 'meltdown'.

I have been slammed on this board for not being progressive enough because I was explaining why people may vote No to the Voice, or support the LNP etc. And I vote Greens (mock me now if you wish) and helped with campaigning for Yes. Displaying empathy or attempting to understand the opposing view is a source of insults around here.

I appreciate the non-trolls explaining why Trump may have won easily in the end. Funny enough, this is the least toxic this thread has been for many years because with definitive election results and not just endless polls we can actually analyse the data with less political bias clouding the analysis.

Retreating back into the progressive 'bubble' in these Internet echo-chambers ensures Trump and co for many more years. The average voter just doesn't want the elites telling them what they should do and think, and at the moment Harris and the Democrats are the elites. blah blah Trump is an elite too blah blah...you're missing the point if you come back to me with this.

The far left in here seem to have trouble realising that their version of politics/ ideology is not what the majority of people in this world want, but hey keep calling people racists, Nazis and whatever buzzwords you want.

This election was the US people voting, not the world.

Trump is super unpopular here even amongst most LNP voters.

Do you think the Dems and Kamala are far left?

Good news for you is that everything you said above is wrong and is pure fearmongering from those who you get your information from. You can rejoice, no Republican is banning abortion at a Federal level. No LGBT are being denied access to healthcare (unless you're talking specifically about gender transition programs for children - which is a different issue). Rejoice, the things you are concerned about will not happen. Thank Donald Trump for that.
Just like Roe v Wade wouldn’t be overturned?

They are going to everything they can at a federal and state level to ban abortion. Hopefully they fail in their attempts but the changes they’ve made so far have been for the worse.

So they’ve already started trying to wind back care for Trans kids.

These things are already happening. 4 more years of Trump and a lot more damage will be done.

In what regard?

Everything. People, attitudes, friendliness. That was in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and California. Just because a 20 year old barista lives in LA* doesn't mean they want to defund the police, and just because a 55 year old barman lives in Winchester, VA doesn't mean they think the year should be 1820. It isn't people thinking a certain way just because of the prejudices that exist for that location. As always, the truth is a lot more nuanced.

(* - only place I didn't like. Loved everywhere else in America, LA is a hole. The place, not the people.)

Not that I agree with the tariff v income tax argument but at least a tariff only applies to things you consume. Income tax is taken unilaterally. You could live in a chalet in the Forrest with your own power and still pay 60% of your income to the Government. Under a tariff system, theoretically you pay for what you consume, if you consume less you contribute less.

Now I don't think he's actually going to do that but it does raise an interesting question of fairness.

It’s funny you mention 60%. That’s about the percentage of goods bought from china in the US.

Of course he was only joking when he said he would apply a tariff he’s such a funny guy.

Yeah no one seems very angry it actually feels constructive.

Roe v Wade is not law, it is (was) a legal precedent. The US Federal Government had no impact on it and the Republicans have repeatedly indicated they will not be putting in place Federal abortion laws. You have been propagandized.

Was listening to Dominic Sandbrook's take last night and he basically said that the reality is the majority of people don't care about the day in day out cycle of politics and make their decision to vote based on simple material circumstances. The fact that "Did Joe Biden drop out" was broadly searched on google yesterday attests to this. They don't look at stock market figures or listen to economists they just ask "Am I better off than I was a few years ago?" if the answer is no they're probably going to vote out the incumbent party.

Tend to agree with that assessment and it's likely why Albo will only get one term.

People in Australia are going to have to grapple with these sorts of fundamental questions soon enough. People can't pay rent, let alone buy a house, and this creates the sorts of divisions and tensions which people like Trump thrive upon.

An entity like Labor needs to go back to first principles. What is government for? How does this party want to use the power of government? To what end?

Once you've done that, do the work of aligning your values with the people whose vote you're after.

I won't mock you for your Greenery. Not today.

Weirdly I think him being president before made the talk of his extremism fall flat.

Jan 6 has been largely sanewashed and people think the world didn’t end under his presidency before so what is different now?

Now we know he’s got all loyalists in positions he did before and they are way more organised than in 2017 when he didn’t even expect to win, but the average person doesn’t know or care about that.
