VAFA General Discussion

God I love silly season.

No footy to talk about so all the playground squabbles and cliques come to the fore.

In other news, preseason started last Thursday night for some clubs. Starts tomorrow for me.

The topic was in the wrong thread - hence the move - but we shouldn't just brush aside this matter.

The allegation is that an amateur football club took the entire junior list of another amateur club - or at least a significant number of them - to a meal to induce them to switch to their club.

My guess is the VAFA would - should - be most concerned at this allegation because should it become general practice it has the potential to create quite some irritation competition-wide.

btw. Why of earth would goal umpires be training now?:astonished:

That should be investigated and acted upon appropriately.

I reckon I've got one good season left in me and I'm going to make it count.

To confirm , not the entire list , but under 17's moving to 19's next season.
Also how does a club use a different name for it's 19's !

Have got on good record that Glen Eira bribed students at Mckinnon to poach them from other clubs. Some pretty grimey tactics used too, gifting them alcohol for example.

Someone may know more than me but pretty sure Glen Eira got sanctioned for it in the end.
The alleged provision of a gift - ie meal and beverages- to impressionable kids as bait to raid another amateur club's young talent is at best improper and at worst contemptuous. I doubt there would be a club in the VAFA who would not be concerned at this behaviour.

I know that folk at both the board and admin levels read Big Footy. Let's see whether under the new admin led by Jason Reddick they will be proactive and investigate.

Or take the line of least resistance.

In light of what happened with the Premier B Grand Final fiasco, would the VAFA come up with a plan to make sure that what happened on Premier B Grand Final Day at Sportscover Arena/Elsternwick Park will not happen again in future years?

No , they were so happy it happened , god help us !

Is there any movement expected from the VAFA re the grog policy for 2023. A policy which once upon a time was used as leverage for the competition, now only appears to be a disadvantage to the competition (crowds, revenue for clubs ect).

Surely in 2023 it’s time for the VAFA to make some form of change and/or flexibility to the existing rule. Bloke just wants to get out of the house and have a few beers watching some local footy.

I think what went on this year (which appeared to be allowing people to drink in the social club during the main game) worked quite well. Drifting around matches in Albert Park Reserve (Albert Park, Power House, South Melbourne District) it definitely appeared to encourage reserves players to stick around (instead of disappearing immediately, as has been a problem for years).

That said, the 2022 VAFA alcohol policy ( https://www.vafa.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/VAFA-Alcohol-Policy-FINAL.pdf ) was only on a trial basis, and is an incredibly over-complex way of going about it.

Personally, I'd just allow drinking during the main game, but only within the club rooms, and with penalties for any misbehaviour.

That would make too much sense. Better let the architects of the worlds longest lockdown to be brought in as consultants and provide a plan.

Your right about the reserves , as they never mingled . We but some food on every home game and invited the oppo up and it was well received .

I believe Old Mentone might be playing at Le Page Park in Cheltenham and aligning with the Cheltenham Panthers . A long narrow ground.
I have heard rumblings that Old Mentone may fold, any updates Bedders? Or is it a case that they dont have a ground?

They don't have a ground and i believe plenty have left with a few going to Highett . For fixturing you would hope this is resolved . If they go under do Far Kew come up , or do we go to 9 teams in C

I would have thought it'd go 2 up/1 down and teams like UHS and Whitefriars stay in Prem C and D1

Chelt Panthers are a feeder club for Cheltenham in Div 1 so zero chance of that happening, Le Page Park is possibly the only venue for Old Mentonians to play on so that’s why that’s in the conversation
I’m sure a few find their way to the Rosellas, but they are not a direct feeder. Different club, different ground, different jumper, and even different council area. As many, possibly more end up at St Bedes with others traditionally going to Beaumaris, Old Mentonians and probably other clubs. Old Mentonians have been scoping out a ground in the Kingston area for years. If true, this might be a good option for them. Don’t want to see any club go under.

I hope they survive, and go to Le Page. Would be good to see senior footy return to an old ESCFA ground. AFAIK, senior footy hasn't been played there since Cheltenham Assumption (ESCFA, SFL) folded in the late 90s.

Not this shit again! :tearsofjoy:
We just got over the 11-team fiasco this season!

Surely Uni High stay up and Preston drop to keep the equilibrium.
Have heard rumblings many clubs from D3-c grade have been advised changes afoot which has displeased the committee at Uni High
