The medical modelling based on the Australian approach to flatten the curve suggests the peak activity in Australia will be June/July. This will limit mortality and allow health system to best deal with surge. Hard to see football being played.
Men play a 9 round season and the Women play 7 games. Each teams plays each other once. May work. Need to get some love from councils and cricket clubs.

This is a joke, let’s just accept most will get it, it’s unstoppable. Play on I say.
12 years of expensive St Kev's education wasted.

It's not the fit young players who are the concern, although they should be. There's what, 3000+ VAFA players total? Someone give me an accurate figure if you've got one. Say a third of players pick up the virus and two thirds get off Old Scotch free.

On numbers alone - which are remarkably consistent worldwide - of those 1000 players:
830 will have no symptoms or will experience a mild case - "mild" being anything from a sore throat to pneumonia
120 will require hospitalisation
50 will require life support
2 will die
Fit, young, strong as an ox and completely invulnerable. For their age group, the case fatality rate is 0.2%. Do the math and prove me wrong.

But 1000 players were infectious. People appearing to be in rude health pass it on before symptoms show (if indeed they have any obvious symptoms), and become most infectious in the 48-72 hours immediately afterward.

On average they will have passed it on to (lowest average) 2.2 people. That's 2200 workmates / friends / family. Family includes parents and grandparents. The 0.2% death rate is consistent until people hit their 50s, then it goes up exponentially.

So the 81 year olds don't have to play footy. They just need to have Timmy pay a visit with the great-grandkids while infectious. Or they just need to toddle down to the ground to sit in the rooms perched up near the window talking about young Timmy's chances and how he would have been a shoe-in for the 1953 premiership side. And if they catch it and they have good karma and everything is in their favour, they will have a 1 in 5 chance of dying. Unless our wonderfully underfunded and overstretched health system doesn't have the beds, equipment and staff to look after everybody, in which case intensivists will examine their case on its merits and apply numerous criteria before deciding the limited resources are best spent on someone who is more likely to pull through, who is more likely to have a shorter stay in hospital, and who is more likely to lead a better quality of life post-treatment.

Informed opinion is a marvellous thing; it allows inquiring minds to make better decisions than if their sole knowledge is based on whatever the news and social media regurgitates and whatever the government wants you to hear. Get informed.

Well said OTP.

This is the exact kind of ingrained self indulgent and ignorant rubbish that led to the recent debacle that has come to light recently within the community of your alma mater. Do us all a favour and find the rock that your ex principal is hiding under and join him.

Does anyone know when VAFA will make an official decision on this?

Could they perhaps suggest starting the season at the traditional "halfway point" of the season and have everyone play each other once then lead into a finals series?

I thought the VAFA were meeting last night, surprised no comms has come out yet this morning. Would be surprised if they didn't follow the EFL decision.

VAFA today said:
The VAFA Board met last night to discuss and reach a position in relation to the 2020 season and the ramifications due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A wide range of matters were considered.

This included a review of the starting date for the season, alternatives to that date, fixtures, commercial considerations, affiliation fees, VAFA staff, umpires’, players’ and volunteers’ welfare, season length and a range of other matters.

The Board reached a position which will today be taken by Brett Connell (CEO) to a meeting with AFL Victoria and CEOs from other community leagues for ratification.

The details will be conveyed on this website and club portals as soon as possible after the meeting concludes.

Further details will follow accordingly.

At all stages the health, safety and welfare of our community is paramount.

Thanks for your understanding.

It was $1.01 that Hair Hat would come out with the worst take on here.

If the VAFA suspends competitions for 2/3 months I would imagine there will be staff cuts or lay offs. The staff are paid by the clubs who will all be hard hit if the season does not go ahead. The VAFA will have to return affiliation fees to those that paid early if delayed or no competition eventuates. That would mean VAFA Staff to be paid from the nest egg of less than a million in reserve if all kept on. Clubs won't want that to happen b/c they will have to build it up again in following years. In the non sporting world kids are losing/have lost jobs all over the place. Makes no $$ sense to keep them all on if basically nothing to do. All should now be in place for "the season" which will be dramatically reduced if it starts at all. I would imagine many sponsors won't be willing to chuck dollars in if no competition. Clubs will have to enter into discussions with coaches to decide what to do going forward. Most are handshake deals so I'm tipping that ratio payments will be in vogue.

Clubs that are well off will absorb the situation but many that float close to the line will be in a really tough spot. Guessing most clubs have purchased medical gear, uniforms, apparel, maybe drinks stock etc but will not be able to offset if no season. Will the VAFA uniform suppliers be able to be paid if players don't want to buy uniforms because there is no season?

Beyond all this Insurance is a major issue. Will JLT/MARSH be able to issue full invoices to teams that have applied to play yet there is an inevitable long break where no one is allowed to train or play. Blue Moon: How do you prove where you contract the virus? Elderly volunteer who has registered with the VAFA gets it "from a player" and unfortunately passes away? Will MARSH honour that? No way b/c you can't prove where the virus came from? VAFA/AFL needs to get very accurate answers from MARSH immediately.

No one is a winner here.

Exactly.....3pm and still waiting

My guess is first half of the season will be called off, with a shortened season beginning in early June

9 game season?Would it even be worth it? Just call the season off. Re-group for 2021

Plan to start the year on the 2nd of May would be my suggestion.
Play during the Queens Birthday weekend.
Play during the bye weekend.
Extend the season by one week.
Cancel the representative matches

That gives 6 weeks to see what happens. According to all the news reports, it's likely to get worse, but it's a plan I guess
