VAFA General Discussion

The idea that a team would suddenly be more motivated to not tank a scratch match designed to determine which grade they play for a whole season based on netting a few hundred dollars worth of canteen/bar takings is quite……interesting….

Fixturing for 2022 would be a nightmare though if we want to go left field. Having the top 4 in each division play off for the 2021 Premiership would be a better way resolve any concerns around tanking.

To summarise:
'Oh God, don't fixture us to play less than 18 games, nor anything other than every team twice exactly. It's unfair! It's inconvenient!'
But also:
'So please, fixture us fairly, by promoting a team that finished first or second after 11 games. Those 11 games are the perfect indication they were the best teams!'

Intellectual constraints mostly explain how people hold these two positions at once. Raging but undeclared self-interest explains the balance.

It’s pretty much the only relevant VAFA issue currently being raised on here, so unless Gia77 wants to chime in with something else……?

Well now that you mention it, I would like to see VAFA introduce more flexibility with the 2022 season. There's no doubt in my mind we will experience more (partial) lockdowns at least. We need more contigencies to ensure a season goes ahead and finals are completed.

They haven't even worked out B and C yet !

Lol, next year is a state election year. There is more chance of Dan resigning than imposing lockdowns on the population at over 90% vaccination levels and in an election year.

given the inevitable in Premier C and B for next year, what would we prefer to see? At least option 1 in C and options 2 and 3 remove the concern about “playing less” and clubs losing ability to make money.

Premier C
Kick off first Saturday in April
1) 20 rounds with a final 4 or final 5 - so full fixture with each team playing each other twice (axing the double bye in the July)
2) 18 rounds with final 4 or final 5 - compromised draw - playing only 8 teams twice

And premier B
Kick off after Easter
1) 16 rounds with final 4 - play each other twice
Kick off first Saturday in april
2) 18 rounds with final 4 - roll around for a 2 more games compromised draw
3) 20 rounds with final 5 - as above with 4 more games

Do we really care about compromised draws?? Remembering the AFL draw is well and truely screwed and it seems to work ok in the biggest comp in the country…

Lets switch the narrative to solutions mode… And remember - hopefully we are only solving this problem for 2022 season and everything resets back to normal.

And good to see a few more glasses half full join the conversation over the last few days

1 if it can be fitted in for C - have an even draw
And
2 for B - sides have missed too many games already to have extra byes

May seem slightly contradictory however my first priority is giving players games then second Is even draw

How's this, don't compromise the competition and the VAFA use their discretionary powers and determine that Monash should step up to Prem B.
If that's the case they should also be demoting Preston even though they don't want to and promoting Whitefriars.

Just plain stupid. Would you be happy if the VAFA used the same so called ”powers” and pushed up Old Geelong? Ormond? or Old Ivanhoe? Or forced down Parkside? NO - of course you wouldnt.

We have established, through some adults recently joining the conversation we need to move on. Apart of a messy draw (which the league needs to sort) - its play on with glasses half full (in some cases)

"Through some adults?" Are you referring that because I have an opinion I am a child?

but OG , Ormond and OI didn't finish on top . How do Parkside get involved ?

Jon Anderson in the HS reporting that 3 people are challenging for positions on the board calling it "time for change" they are Alistair Ewart from Winning Edge , long time sponsor Peter Nash and former CEO Phil Stevens . The meeting with a few Presidents tomorrow night will be interesting to say the least , no one is going to accept 11 teams.
