FWIW maybe a newly promoted team should be careful????
No idea to whom you're referring. But the only occasion I can recall where a team copped a massive penalty (ie loss of points, relegation, and a fine) was when the player concerned went to the VAFA to inform them he'd been offered an inducement to sign elsewhere. So unless there's a smoking gun, a la that case, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Are you referring to the incident where back in 1999-2000 Old Melburnians were punished by the VAFA over a player called Andrew Topakas which is mentioned in two chapters from Paul Daffey's excellent book 'Local Rites'?

The Terry Young incident many years ago late 80's early 90's is one of the first I can recall.

Was that the one where in 1988 St Bernards took the VAFA to court over the fact that the VAFA found the Snowdogs gulity of attempting to lure Terry Young away from Fawkner, was suspended for the remainder of 1988 and demoted to B Section? St Bernards later held a large function to cover the court costs after losing the case, and according to the 1992 VAFA history book For the Love of the Game, two state politicians donated money towards the function only to be accused of breaching the Electoral Act.

I would have preferred Terry to stay in A-grade .....as we went to B and then C in the coming years and had to play against him in his Fawkner days! Not a fun afternoon at all

Here’s some news from the umpiring department, congrats to the 9 umpires who graduated to other higher level competitions, fabulous effort!

Interesting that none of the 9 umpires promoted were female

If the VAFA lawyers and officials thought after winning the case against St Bernards in 1988 it would be the first and the last time they would have to go to court over a major VAFA issue (ie tribunal ruling, player transfers etc) by either an aggrieved club or individual, they were sadly mistaken.

The best are selected.
AFL want to promote women into umpiring yet the talented female umps can’t get a look in. It’s farcical that AFLW is not umpired predominately by girls, there are more than enough good female umpires that could easily umpire at this level..

I know plenty of male umpires who have gone to VFL level and have umpired almost exclusively women’s games and have become disheartened by the lack of standard which is well below what they were umpiring at suburban level and have completely given up umpiring and dont return to local comp.. It’s one of the main reason comps like the VAFA struggle to fill games, because unlike players very few umpires who go up the ranks return to local footy once they are finished at the higher level.

Perhaps a few phone calls could recruit some high end talent?

The VAFAUA would like to extend a warm welcome to the newly appointed Boundary Umpire Discipline Lead, Raushaan Seychell who will lead the boundary umpires for season 2023. Raushaan rejoins the VAFA after an outstanding career as a running boundary umpire which saw him promoted to the VFL list!
Following his retirement from the VFL at the conclusion of the 2022 season, Raushaan will return to the VAFA to take on the coaching role to help develop the next generation of boundary umpires at the VAFA.

Since we are back playing again if there is no representative games can you still put that down to Covid? Is there any appetite for representative football anymore?
Under normal circumstances the VAFA would usually announce some representative football matches for this season (ie VAFA would play SA in Senior and C-D4; Under 19 would face NSW-ACT), but the fixtures recently released by the VAFA shows no rep games for this year. Has the VAFA killed off representative football for good?

Do we need rep footy. Save the money and use it to entice more umpires.

Just been going through the 2006 VAFA Annual Report, and reading the Umpire Operations Report by Brian Goodman, he listed some stats from umpire recruiting from 2002-06 which makes interesting reading, in light of current umpire numbers:

2002-90 registered umpires to fill 116 appointments (Too many one-umpire games)
2003-98 umpires to fill 115 appointments (A lot of one-umpire games)
2004-103 umpires to fill 120 appointments (A lot more one umpire games)
2005-129 umpires to fill 120 appointments (2 field umpires in most games throughout the season)
2006-135 umpires to fill 118 appointments (2 field umpires in most games throughout the season)

Don't think the VAFA would get that many umpires like they did in 2006 to control not just Senior, Reserve, Under 18/19 and Thirds/Club 18 but also Women's football.
