I wouldn't be reading too much into the result down at keysie...OM with their enitre spine - 8 players playing in the senoirs and 3 out injured means they'll take some beating when their full side plays (as was the case last year with teams who underestimated them)

oeg had an impressive win against om, although letting them slowly get back into the match, i think they have a great group of players with great depth and will go along way this season. Tootel, cerantonio, rodgers, wardlaw, melisi, jones and remboulis were all standouts. Benson looks like he will be unbeatable in the ruck. Williams was very unlucky reinjuring his hammy at arriving for his first contest. Saunders also suffered a slight hamstring problem.

The contest should have been over at half time with OE's having 28 inside 50s in the second quarter. Inaccurate kicking made the game seem closer than the scores suggest. Trevaskis and McGorry to come back also adds weight to the OE cause.

Yeh well it will be an interesting year and next week will uncover more about the year... It will be good if we keep getting this info from everyone's club on how they see themselves and the year, welcome titeleash and coolbananas welcome back nathan brown 7.

Let's get some tips in and some more thoughts boys...

Very interesting to see two boys up at the tribunal this week with Timmy Edwards one of the key players for oakleigh up with Cameron Stockdale, will be a big loss to Oakleigh if Edwards is up... Although don't know much about Stockdale as he's from Old Trinity.

OLD IVANHOE GRAMMARIANS
vs
BENTLEIGH 5 points
Really not sure about this game... But Bentleigh have not lost many players from last year with many of the same names still playing. Old Ivanhoe played a lower team in the Ants last week and will go in expecting another push over. An upset on the cards IMO. Although a very hard game to judge the hardest and am still

ORMOND AFC 65 points
vs
BULLEEN TEMPLESTOWE AFC
Ormond will have no problem disposing of the ants with a big percentage boosting game after only beating La Trobe they will come out with a point to prove.

OLD ESSENDON GRAMMARIANS 15 points
vs
OAKLEIGH AFC
Big Travel to Old Essendon and if they want to prove they have improved they need a win against Oakleigh, Oakleigh lacking the quality of players with a big player turnover with many top ages last year. Although Derks Riverre is a very talented player and the one to watch for Oakleigh, can't miss the man with the beard. Tim Edwards is another player that will need to fire to knock over Old Essendon

OLD TRINITY GRAMMARIANS 60 points
vs
MELBOURNE HIGH SCHOOL OB
Melbourne High Schools injuries continue and they just do not have the committment one of the less spirited teams all of last year struggled for numbers when playing away and Old Trinity is AWAY. A thumping on the cards but don't look too much into it a different team at home.

OLD MENTONIANS
vs
LA TROBE UNIVERSITY AFC 15 points
Much like Melbourne La Trobe are a mixed bag but if they have spirit in the early rounds then they will definately beat Mentonians. They struggle for numbers on big trips but if they do have the numbers will get over the line.

I for one can't wait to get stuck into round 2. Everything is very hard to read after only one round and at the moment it's a guessing game. Round 2 should hopefully reveal a few answers. Bentleigh v Old Ivanhoe is 1 v 2 and looks like a massive game. That result will tell us a bit. News from Oakleigh is that Edwards is up on a tripping charge and possibly umpire abuse as well.

Old Ivanhoe will be the bolters at the end of the year. With baldy, jake 'the snake' and ricky j all playing seniors and due to come back for finals, 3 classy quick onballers who showed their pressence in the 1's, baldy by getting in the best and jessop by kicking 2 goals, jake smashed blokes all day and won the ball on a number of occasions against tougher opponents. so watch out if ivanhoe ones dont make finals, these 3 players may make the difference between runners up and winning a grand final

rickyj, better make sure they don't play too many senior games to make them ineligible for 19's finals. but if they're as good as you say, they'll carry your ones to the finals anyways ;)

Old Ivanhoe v. Bentleigh... should be a good game.

How both sides looking, any players to watch for from both teams, any interesting matchups?

Let me re-phrase that, would have been a good game if Bentleigh came out to play.

Credit to Ivanhoe who were faster, bigger, more aggresive and their run out of the backline and through the middle was first class.

From a few conversations, the bentleigh team encountered a number of late exclusions however had some promising signs with players like #24 and #1 looking the goods in the backline.

Ivanhoe for the flag IMO.

Did anyone catch the game involving La Trobe at the weekend? They certainly put in a good performance. Did they have guys coming back that didn't play the week prior?

latrobe played an undermanned (i think, as they were terrible) mentonian side. Latrobe have a pretty decent side, not sure how far they will go, as the uni holidays are coming up and most players will be going back to the country. What does everyone else rate of latrobes chances?

Mentone were massively under manned. Just 3 players on there main list played the rest had barely trained. They were missing 7-10 players because they played seniors and then were also missing the same amount due to the fact the school team was playing against Assumption so could not make it back in time. This was the case for the two first games so dont take this into your thoughts about OM. When, if, they get a full squad in they will contend.

i wouldnt think in the immediate future. the problem is that the 8 guys playing seniors will soon become ineligable. would love to see what they could do with their full side in - only losing 4 guys from last years premiership team that beat Mazenod and Hailbury would see them a real force in 3rd division....shame tho

Anyone got any thoughts on Ormond? They just beat La Trobe and Bullen and now sit 2-0. Are they the real deal or just benefiting from the draw early on?

Good form titeleash, how much of a difference will the school boys make when they become available. Campbell would surely make a big difference in a competition and team like that. Lewie mitchell playing seniors?

School boys would help no end. With literally 18 premiership players to come into the side (if it ever happens) it would make a huge difference and see them not as a contender but the contender....

i wouldnt count latrobe out this year...a pretty handy side. What are Ivanhoe like? I played against them last year and that Baldy guy was very very handy (seemed a tad arrogant though), is he still playing? Who does everyone rate as flag favourites? Ormond could be classed as the real deal...a few quality players in their side..however, we only lost to them by 2 goals and we pulled together a pretty shabby side on that day.

Flag favourites for me would be Old Ivanhoe given their got depth, are always a strong school boy side and have retained players from the last season.

Roughie - Old Essendon

No doubt the top 3 will be a class above the rest. OE, OI and OT - whomever finishes 4th will need a massive effort to push beyond the 1st semi.

Couldn't agree with you more Concrete Boots. It seems the top 3 has already been cemented this early in the season. Will be interesting to see which team rounds up the 4?

It's annoying that on the VAFA site results, only 1 of the 5 games from last weekend has the full details (goals and best) for both sides. I for one am always interested to see things like the leading goal-kickers for the year, and who's been in the best most and at the moment we can't accurately view this. I know it's only a small matter but is it the VAFA being slack, or something else?

Top 3 is far from cemented... Old Trinity has not proven anything they beat a very average Oakleigh side, an even less underamanned team than in round 1 Melbourne High with 19 players and by the end struggled to have 18 on the field.
The only team that has proven something is Old Ivanhoe, they should have beaten bulleen by 100 but innacuracy cost them and then demolished a Bentleigh team who were on top at the time. Bentleigh are far from shabby and when players come back will be a contender.
Whilst Old Essendon beat Mentonians and Oakleigh... Far from star studded sides.

The contenders this year in no particular order
Old Ivanhoe
Ormond
Old Trinity
Bentleigh
Old Essendon
La Trobe

To early to read into anything about any teams yet. Its round 2. Its a long season, alot of these boys have only ever played school footy, and they are 8 and 9 game seasons, the vafa is a long 18 game season, and come june and july will be the real test for teams to keep up there form, with injuries, shit weather, player drop off, injuries in the seniors meaning 19s play 1's. There is alot of football to be played yet. In this comp last year oakliegh lost 2 games all season and didnt win a final, and Ormond were 4th all year, then steamrolled ivanhoe then oakliegh to make the GF (to lose to St Bede's - they were to good for division 3).

Teams drop off, others get players back, which makes the under 19s the least predictable comp in the vafa.

Make early predictions about whose gonna be in finals at your own peril!

The only things we can judge is individual performances. Who are the shining lights at the moment from each club. Who is your tip for the goal kicking? Who is your tip for the league B and F?
